How Do You Drink Your Tea?

I'm a BIG coffee person but I keep reading about the health benefits of tea. So I can't give up my coffee but I'm gonna add tea to the afternoon regimen :) Other than steeping the tea in hot water, I have no idea how to drink it.... do you add milk? sugar? drink it plain? If it matters, green tea is what I'm aiming for.... Thanks!

What can I do next?

I drink black, earl grey or English breakfast with a dollop of cream and 2 sugars (literally 2 because I buy the sugar cubes specifically for my my tea). I got really into tea this year, bought a whole darling tea set and tea pot.

Mmmm, that sounds really good actually. I'm thinking I might go make a cup!

Get a sampler...I don't add anything unless it's already added to the bag. I drink one cup of coffee a day, 2-3 cups of hot tea (in the winter only) and a LARGE Iced Tea a all my water...

I agree with others...brand matters. I personally like Celestial Seasoning...but it can get expensive!

I am constantly in the ladies room!

I like black tea brewed strong, chai, and sometimes mint. Or even better strong black tea with a fresh mint leaf or two. I always use a spoonful of honey for sweetening. And cream with chai. I don't care much for green tea or anything fruit flavored.

Oooohhhhh.....I love tea...especially in the evening after the kids have gone to bed. My hubby and I drink tea, cuddle up on on the couch and chat about our day or watch a show.

I only drink certain kinds of herbal teas. I don't drink green tea. But...tea is delicious sweetened simply with honey. I prefer spearmint, peppermint, rose hip or chamomile.

Good luck and best wishes at having some terrific tea!

As a self-confessed tea snob, I think brand matters so be willing to try several different brands to find one you like. I think cheaper brands can tend to bitterness if over brewed (steeped too long in hot water) so be mindful of that. I prefer my tea plain. In the summer I love sun tea which is a good use for some exotic fruit types I can't drink hot. I personally dislike green tea so I can't help you there.

I drink mostly green tea. Nothing added. It's rather good. There are LOTS of different brands and some have all sorts of things (floral, herbal and other flavors) added. Don't like that. I like the Costco Kirkland brand of green tea and I will drink green tea that has toasted rice added.

No don't add sugar! Add honey or agave.

I add a bit of milk. Makes it more smoother. You'll love tea. It is a whole 'nuther realm of beverages. The flavor choices are just about endless. My fav is vanilla caramel chai, any type of green tea, and mango blueberry flavors.

Drink it slow and let yourself relax. Breathe it in. Tea is SO good for you.

I drink my black and green teas mixed with organic honey and whole or 2% milk added in the morning. Sometimes I have one in the afternoon for a pick me up. I prefer it over coffee any day.

I drink herbal teas with honey only.

I drink ice tea with 1 sugar and 1 sweetener and sometimes lemon.

If I have a cold, I drink any kind of hot tea with honey and lemon.

Welcome to the tea world!

Good Earth original is a spicy tea... pretty strong flavors, maybe not for everyone. I like mine with Baileys...(okay, not in the middle of the day). otherwise plain.

Black tea I drink the "proper" way....with sugar and milk. Green tea I drink plain or with a bit of honey. Herbals I drink plain. I tried Truvia in my tea and it was awful. Splenda is fine.

I'd suggest you invest in an infusion basket and tea pot.

Go into a tea shop and ask for recommendations for green tea. Most good tea shops will allow you to sample from a few blends. "Green Tea" encompasses a HUGE variety of leafs; each with it's own delicate flavors. Find one that suits you best. Drinking tea can be a sweet ritual and pleasure.

Green Tea should not be over steeped, which it often is. Most green teas should only be steeped for 1.5-2 minutes. Make SURE to cover your cup or pot - otherwise you will loose all the lovely volatile oils that give tea its beautiful flavors.

Ask the tea shop for the ideal water temperature and tea to water ratio, as well as for steeping time for your particular tea.

Usually, it will be about two tsp per 11 oz of water.
My favorites are:

(aromatic black),
Lady Grey
Earl Grey
Indian Spice

(classic black)
Russian Caravan
Lapsang Souchong

(aromatic green)

I'll blend 'em for medicinal purposes.

Black teas I use honey and milk - a fair bit of both. Green I take plain. Tisanes I'll either take plain or with honey and milk depending on the flavor and purpose of the beverage.

I grew up drinking hot tea with lemon and sugar.
I don't care for it with milk and sugar, but many people like it that way.
I like herbal teas and I drink them hot or cold and I like green tea, too.
Some teas have quite a lot of caffeine in them - Earl Grey is one of them, so I can't drink that one in the afternoon.
Chamomile is very relaxing and fine to have before bedtime.

I've never had a cup of coffee in my life! LOL

99% of the time (and I am a daily tea drinker) I drink Earl Grey with 2 packets of milk. I'm a purist. :)

Not a fan of green tea at all. But I do make it the same way.

caffeine free, cold, plain, and strong.

It all depends on what flavor I am drinking. I never add milk, don't like milk in general.
I can not tolerate any artificial sweetners at all so when I want it sweetened I use sugar or honey. Or I leave it alone and drink it plain.
Green Tea I leave alone most of the time. Honey goes well with green tea.

I am a coffee drinker.
I also love tea.
I drink my coffee black. Nothing in it.
I drink my tea, as is. Nothing in it. To me, tea is best, as is. Then that way you actually taste the tea... not the sweet things added to it. And if drinking super good high end tea... why add things to it because it only disguises the taste.

In Asian cultures, typically no sugar or milk/cream is added to tea. You drink it as is.
But per Thai teas, they have a great sweetened Chai tea. Which is a spiced tea. Cold. Iced.

Green Tea: should be drunk, as is. Plain.

I have to have a bit of Splenda in mine, but some seem naturally sweet and do not seem to need anything at all. I know it sounds corny, but I really do like the celestial seasons brand of tea. The Lemon Zinger is yummy, I like sleepytime, and there is a peppermint one that is nice as well.

answers from Los Angeles on

How you drink your tea is definitely personal preference. There is no right or wrong way.
I don't drink coffee, I only drink tea.
In the morning I drink hot English Breakfast Tea, which just a little bit of milk.
If I drink ice tea, sometimes I drink it plain, sometimes I add a little sweetener.
I sometimes drink green tea - but I drink it plain. The same goes for herbal teas.
Except Chai tea, I add a little milk and sugar.
And, I never add lemon.

My favorite green tea is toasted rice green tea. I had to choke down enough costs-as-much-as-a-car-tea-ceremony-green-tea at diplomatic functions and holidays with a smile on my face to really loathe the stuff. Gack. Don't get me wrong, I can still drink it with a smile on my face, and we still have some of it... but I wouldn't do it on purpose, unless it was to avoid being impolite. Fortunately, it's almost impossible to find in the states, but some temples DO keep a stock of it for weddings and such. Toasted rice green tea is NEITHER expensive, nor frothy (ick), but suits me down to the ground.

Green tea, traditionally (japanese traditionally, at least, can't speak for china) is drunk straight, hot or chill, but never cold... unless you're buying a bottled drink of some kind with tea in it. There are dozens of varieties, and any flavoring is type specific to the tea (like toasted rice, pine resin, etc.). One does not add sweetener, and dairy is practically non-existent in Japan.

For black Teas... I like PG tips. With sugar ( quite a lot), and cream sometimes. .. and dearly love southern sweet tea, with just a pinch of baking soda
