How Do You Clean Your Oven?

My oven is not in a good shape. I need a good oven cleaner but I do not like the toxic fumes.
Do you have any product recommendations? How do you clean your oven? avoid the fumes?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the ideas. I live at a rented townhouse and the oven is pretty old (not self cleaning). I guess I will start from the easiest-sounding method and take it from there :-))
Thanks again!

They have the "FUME FREE" oven cleaner at Target, Walmart, etc. It works great and has NO smell at all. I think you will be happy, I also use SOS pads, they work really good if its just a little spill, etc. If its a big job,I would use the oven cleaner.

Hi Nese,
In my many years of excessive cooking, I've come to the conclusion there are only two routes to a consistently fume/hard labor free clean oven:

1) Don't use it
2) Buy a new one

Have a great day!

How old is your oven? Almost all ovens have a SELF CLEANING option available on the controls. Follow the directions but it usually goes like this..Empty the entire oven, including racks. Close door and lock if it is not a self locking kind. Select Self Clean..sometimes you can adjust the hours down say from 6 hours to 4 hours. Walk away and forget about. It heats up super high for a super long time and turns almost everything into ash. Wipe out with old dirty rags your going to throw away b/c they will stain, or use dark cut up old towels.

And then in the future, be sure to line your oven with tine foil, 2 layers, take one out when it's gets yucky.

I use the regular cleaners, so can not help there, but I hate cleaning my oven so I take steps to prevent having to do it often. Once it is clean I line the bottom with tin foil. Since it is the bottom that really gets dirty, I can change out the tin foil often, and than just clean the door and sides when they need it.

Aww, man...I gotta clean THAT too. Sheesh, it never ends, does it? LOL

I have a 20 year old oven...that and the dishwasher are the only appliances and major house functioning items not replaced since we bought the house 17 years ago (furnace, water heater, all that has been replaced..roof, most flooring..ugh..it really DOES never end!). But we will be getting a dishwasher in the next few weeks..weird as I have hand washed dishes for about 3 year years! The stove/oven is next. hoping it can last a bit longer..but really I would love to get an inexpensive one now..maybe an outlet store type one...

Any-hooo.....I do the self clean thing...but not very often. Then as others said...use old towels/rags to get the ash out and toss it all in the trash. Usually does the task. Our oven has no window or peek-thru in the door, so one less thing for me to clean or worry about. I do leave my racks in there. Gets the pizza or gunky melted junk off them. I have never had an issue with doing that.

How often do I clean it? Not often enough enough because it's a major P-I-T-A. And seriously, the only person who sees the inside is me, and at this point I'd rather have a clean living room and a good run than a clean oven ;)

I place a blow with ammonia into the oven overnight and then wipe it out the next day.

Baking soda works suprisingly well. Make a thick paste of baking soda/water and let it sit a bit...then just use some "elbow grease" and scrub really hard.

Mr Muscle is the one we use, and I say we sparingly because I make my husband do ours ;)
The fumes are not too bad at all as long as you dont breathe it right when you spray it. It doesnt fill the room with the aroma.
Anything that remainsf after the initial wipe down and removal of all the grease
I use baking soda to scrub off. It's a messy job no matter how you try to tackle it. Good luck. He just did ours last wknd, cussing me the whole time for letting it get "so bad"... oh well.

I could not believe how well this worked:

Spray Basic H2 degreaser formula on oven (no fumes, no scents, nothing!)
Let sit 10 minutes.
Use a SMALL amount of ScourOff (all natural - has raspberry oil and silica) and wipe off crud.

That's it! You don't need gloves or a face mask!

You can order Basic H2 and ScourOff from any Shaklee rep.

Hope that helps,
K.

I believe the stuff I use is called easy off oven cleaner and they do make it fume free. Once I spray that I use a bucket of hot water and a old washrag to clean it up like I assume most people do? =)

I haven't tried this but I read that you can clean your oven using water and Tang. Mix 1 cup hot water and 2 Tablespoons of Tang. Paint the mixture on your oven. Leave it 10 minutes and then wipe it clean. The citric acid is supposed to clean it and I would think it should smell good afterwards.

I use Norwex brand Oven and Grill Cleaner. It's heat-activated so you heat your oven to the lowest temp possible, then spray the stuff in, close the door and turn off the oven. 10 minutes later you wipe it out with a wet cloth or scrubber and the burnt on grease and gunk literally just wipes right out. Norwex is one of those organic-type product companies so I got this at a Norwex party, but it works great on our oven and my husband loves using it on the grill (which we use almost daily during the summer!) so maybe you can Google a consultant near you if you want to try it.

Nese,
I use Shaklee's Scour Off. It is non-toxic and works great. A jar of it lasts me for about two years. I also use it to clean leather shoes, fixtures and anywhere someone else would use a product like Ajax.
Let me know if you are interested.

If you're interested in the Norwex product that Keri W. recommended, I can help you out. I am a Norwex consultant.

She is referring to the "Oven and Grill Cleaner." It's a 16 oz. spray bottle for $38.99. It has a 60-day warranty. This is how it's described in the catalog... "Formulated for cleaning the toughest oven and grill grime. Dissolves the heaviest burned-on deposits so they can be wiped or rinsed clean. Odorless, water-based, non-caustic cleaner. Bio-based, all-natural and biodegradable."

If you would like to order the product or learn more, please feel free to contact me. ____@____.com

As someone who looked over all mellow thinking "I just love having a fire in the kitchen, so warm and cozy." ((used to have a fireplace in my kitchen))... to realize "YIKES!!! My oven is on fire!!!" Szwooooooooooosch of fire extinguisher. Double check to make sure that it's the alkeseltzer type of fire extinguisher (sodium bicab), and then having to scrub my entire kitchen to get the alkeseltzer off of everything. Don't avoid cleaning it.

((I cook a lot, and often at high temps - 650, etc. I've noticed most grease tends to light up right about 500 degrees.))

The self clean option on your oven will help to an extent... but it will smoke and smell awful.

If you don't like & or are sensitive to the fumes... can you get or pay someone else to do it?

And yes... both vinegar or an alcohol (like vodka, everclear, etc) can also help clean it... but avoid the alcohol in this case. It's possible to get alcohol poisoning form the steam as well as to cause an explosion from the vapors. I use alcohol to deglaze a LOT of kitchen stuff... but most pans only need a couple shots. So I'll only get a little drunk from steam I accidentally inhale. An over would need much more.
