How Do Ovulation Tests Work?

I am just wondering if anyone knows how ovulations tests work? I was reading the instructions and it says it detects the LH surge, does that mean I am ovulating or I am going to? I am just wondering, I find the instructions so hard to read and I can't find the answer to this question in the pamphlet.

What can I do next?

Hi M.,
Yes, the LH surge indicates that you are about to release an egg and are fertile. Best of luck!

Depending on the ones you bought when they show your LH surge it means you will ovulate within 12-24 hrs. From there you usually have a 3-5 day window of fertility.

However in some instances you may be fertle longer that is how I ended up with #3!!!!! I won't complain though she is great!!!

Anyway, once you detect your LH surge you can begin having sex every other day (or every day if you choose) for the next 3-5 days.

I remember with my first and second I took clomid and they had me use ovulation predictors, my Dr told me that we should hold off having sex for a couple days before detecting the LH surge.

Hope this helps you a little, good luck with everything!!!

Hi M.,

I used ovulation kits a lot when we were trying to get pregnant. Once you get that surge, you'll be ovulating in the next 24-48 hrs...so, get a babysitter for that 15 month old and romance your hubby!!

A positive ovulation kit test, means you will ovulate in the next 24-36 hrs. So if it shows positive on Tuesday morning (morning--first urine is best to test--also test same time every day!!!!) then Wednesday morning or evening is best chance of getting pregnant.

From what I remember, when you get a + ovulation stick, it means you are going to ovulate within the next 24 hours. This site is GREAT for any questions about ovulation sticks or pregnancy tests... www.peeonastick.com. Funny site name, I know (pee on a stick). LOL It really helps with questions though.

We had fertility issues with our first, and our fertility specialist had us use both the OPK's as well as chart. The problem I found with charting is that once your temps spikes, you have already ovulated, which lessens your fertile days. With the kits, you can get busy BEFORE you ovulate, increasing your chances. We used both as a "double check", those fertility meds are expensive! Goodluck!

It is supposed to detect when you will be ovulating with the next 24-48hrs. Therefore, if you get a positive, you need to get busy right away so those little guys are swimming and ready when you actually do ovulate. It doesn't work if you wait UNTIL you ovulate to consummate. The ovulation predictors didn't work for me, but monitoring my temps, CM, and saliva tests finally gave me my little boy! :) The saliva test was very accurate for me, but you have to do it exactly as it states.
GOOD LUCK!!!

I never had luck with the ovulation testers. I ended up finding an ovulation calendar on line and followed that both times I have gotten pregnant. I thought it was a lot easier. Just a thought, all you need to know is when you got your last period and then the calendar will give you a range of several days to work on it!!

The LH surge means you're going to ovulate within the next day or so. My husband and I went through several years of being infertile so we bought the clear plan easy fertility monitor. Its easy to use, just buy the test strips that go with the machine and pee on it at the same time each day, the monitor keeps track of everything and its fairly straight forward instructions.

Your LH surge happens right before you ovulate.

I don't know about the tests, but I do know that tracking basal temp and cervical changes works just as well and is quite a bit cheaper. Check out the book "Taking Control of your Fertility" or just Google "tracking fertility".
