How Do I Style/Cut Daughter's Curly Hair?

My eight year old has thick, red, curly hair. It is past her shoulders and it is in a pony tail holder every day (esp. w/ the heat). When she was little, I could just pull the front sides up to the center of her head and the curls would frame her face, it doesn't do that anymore. I don't know whether to add some layers or will that be a disaster? Right now when it is hanging down, it's kinda shaped like a pyramid and it needs to be shaped but it is her crowning glory and I don't want to mess it up at a salon considering how LONG it takes to grow back. I think she's only had a 1/2 dozen haircuts b/c it takes so long to grow.
Any cutting recommendations and a stylist EXPERIENCED with this hair type would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

I have long curly hair and to most peoples surprise I have never owned a blow dryer in my 25 years! I use a mouse by Treseme (sp?) that is for curly hair and containes conditioner. It's not but a few dollars and totally worth it for me! I don't like hairspray or gel because it tends to dry out your hair.

For Shampoo and Conditioner, I use Panteen Pro V for curly hair. It helps hydrate your hair and has been the only stuff I could use over and over without have to change brands after finishing a bottle.

As for cuts, NEVER CUT BANGS! With curly hair you would have to straighten them every day or your daughter would end up pulling them back to get them out of her face. I suggest keeping her hair one length or cutting layers toward the ends but not short layers. Small layers at the bottom help with volume so if she has plenty then you may not want to do layers.

I have always gone to the cheap hair cut places (fantastic sams for example) and just had 1/2 an inch cut off the bottom to keep the ends healthy. I don't try to do the funky styles, etc... as that does not really work for curly hair.

Best of luck as I know it's not easy to handle. Your daughter will get to the point where she will want to do her hair and enjoy the curls.

I know exactly what you are going through! I am 38, and I've had thick, curly red hair my whole life! It's also my "crowning glory."

I would suggest getting a professional opinion (maybe more than one) before doing layers. I did that in junior high, and it was a DISASTER which took forever to grow back out! I also, on the advice of a friend, tried a perm in high school to "tame" the curls. In the long run, I think it did tame the curls. However, I looked like a poodle, and I still cry over those photos.

First, get a good detangler/conditioner. It will calm the curls a bit and make the hair easier to manage. I remember the snarls and knowts and how much they HURT!

Second, hair dryers are not good for hair. But if you must use a hair dyer, one with a diffuser is best. I choose to naturally air dry myself. I also stay away from moose, hair spray and so forth but that is just me.

Believe it or not, I go to a barber shop in Rosenberg. It's on Avenue I. Violet, who works there, is AMAZING. She is the sister of a former student, which is how I met her. She has handled my thick, curly red hair for a few years now. Feel free to contact me if you want more information on Violet and how to find her.

My hair is LONG AND CURLY! I mean naturally curly! I used to spend hours straighting it every day until I found Greg. You need to make an appointment with him, but he is great! Also go to like Walmart and by a diffuser. Its a funny looking attachment that fits on the end of your hair dryer. When you dry your hair it makes it not frizz! Tell Greg that L. sent you. He will help you out and teach you how to style your hair, where its easy and your child can do it =) He cuts my hair, and my whole family's hair! He is a great guy!

Hi!! Eh- I understand! We are the curly and thick hair family. My husband, our two girls and I have curly hair. My husband has dry curly hair. He always shave his hair off. I have soft and thickest curly hair. I always ask for trim and thinner. My eldest daughter has thickest and dry curly. She never had hair cut and she's 6 years old. My youngest daughter has soft curly hair. Never had hair cut, too. I highly recommend - NEVER LAYERS on thick and curly Hair!! I had bad experiences with different layers in my childhood!! I looked like Annie, Mushroom, Lion and had lot of frizzy at the ends. UGH - HATE IT!! Thinner might be better than layers. I just bought Olive Oil Shampoo and Conditions from Sally's few days ago. It seems improving for now. My favorite stylist name is Barabara in Town and Country. She moved out of Texas few years ago. I never find perfect stylist yet since she moved out! :(

Curly hair definitely works better layered. But if you want to keep the length, don't layer it, instead have the sides and bangs cut to frame her face and let the back grow out.

The best thing to do is find a stylist that someone reccomends and take her to have it shaped and cut the way you want it.

The good thing about curly hair is that it's easy to cut. My youngest sister has very thick curly hair and I used to cut and style it all the time. My middle sisters hair is stick straight and a huge pain to cut!

Good luck!
