How Do I Program My Ipod?

My husband gave me an ipod over a year ago. I love music, so this should have been a great gift. However, the only thing I have been able to do with it is load entire CDs onto my computer and then onto my ipod. I would like to have things in categories so that I could listen to an entire album, to random songs, and also to specific "running" songs. I haven't been able to figure out how to get songs into categories, such as running, maybe lullabies, etc. I bought a book on ipods and it didn't address how to do this. It seems like something you should be able to do - does anyone know how to do it?

To clarify based on a response I received, I believe it is the "nano" (??) - it does have a screen and it's not one of the really tiny ones.

LOL My DH bought me an iPod sever years ago... Yeah it was used for like a month... Then I wanted to change some of the music on it. It was such a PITA that it ended up just sitting in a drawer for a year. Then when we found it it wouldn't keep a charge, called Apple. They wanted $100 to fix, the dang iPod didn't even cost that much!! In between how hard it was to add and take off music and the poor customer service.... We will no longer use the Apple products. There's 2 other brands on the shelfs that we found are so much easier to use and we've had no use for the customer service. Sorry I know not helpful, but just know you're no the only one with this issue!

Do you have the "iPod Shuffle" (no screen) because you can't do that with that model. Other tahn that I am not sure. Good luck.

Open you iTunes application on the computer. Through this you can create playlists, then organize the songs into playlists. Once you have that completed, hook your iPod up to the computer and sync it to iTunes. It should organize them for you.

Hi Wendy,

My husband just gave me mine about a month ago and I too had no idea had to use it. He figured I wouldn't have a clue, so he bought me the book: "Ipods and Downloading Music for Dummy's." I have found it to be a wealth of information. Hope this helps.

Take care,
D.

From my experience, I have an ipod 3rd generation (really old) and a U2 video 30 gb ipod. I use iTunes to download songs into my ipod. I also first download a cd or songs into iTunes (I think it goes into the main library)and from there you click on the little "+" button that's on the bottom left corner. This creates a new playlist. You then name the playlist (name of album, band, just whatever you want to call this particular playlist). I then go back to the main library and find the album/songs I just downloaded and "drag n drop" the songs I want in that playlist. Just drag the song over the playlist name you just created and drop the song. To play random songs, you go back to the menu/"extras" on your ipod and select "shuffle". I'm not sure what you mean by "running", do you mean keeping a song or playlist/album on a loop? You can also select that option i think under extras?? I haven't really used that option. Hope this helps. Those nano ipods look pretty cool.

There are three ways to create playlists which is just a folder to organize your music:

1.With iTunes open, click on "File" (in upper left hand coner), then click on "Playlist".

2.Click on the + button (lower left corner).

3. Pess and hold the Ctrl and N keys simultaneously.

Name your playlist (Runnning songs, lullabies, etc) and then go back to the main "library" of songs by selecting "Music" (upper left of iTunes menu). Drag songs from your library (main list) to your newly created playlist.

Depending on the iPod you have, you should be able to make playlists for your specific needs. Here are directions from ehow.com:

Open iTunes on your desktop computer. Now, click on “File” to open a menu of options. Choose “Add New Playlist” to create an untitled playlist. This will appear at the bottom of your list of playlists.

Type in a name for your playlist. Pick something short yet descriptive for the playlist name, as this will help you organize your music on your iPod.

Open “Music” under the “Library.” Drag the titles of songs from the “Library” to the playlist you want to create. Repeat this step until you have added all of the music that you want in the playlist.

I do this all the time to make different workout mixes, etc. Good luck!

It's hard to explain how to do it in an email. A wonderful way to get a lesson is to go to the Apple store. They have great service there and you can even join a class for whatever you are trying to figure out. If you live near Norfolk there is an Apple store in MacArthur Mall. Otherwise, you can call Apple over the phone, they will walk you through anything you need help with. I hope this helps. good luck. I love my Ipod.

Hi Wendy, when you download your cd onto your computer it should automatically categorize it within a group such as classic, r&b etc. I guess you could change those categories the way you want them to and then you'll be able to have a playlist with the same categories. Hope this helps! Oh and this can be done on the music library screen.

Using iTunes, you can make playslists. For example, all your running music can be under a playlist called "Run." Once you've created the playlist, you can add songs to it. For more info, Google "nano user manual" and read the section on "Organizing Your Music." Hope this helps ...
