How Do I Keep Bugs off My Backyard?

We have so many bugs in our backyard, it is nearly impossible to go out there and play with the dogs or just hang out without getting bitten or annoyed by all the bugs. Is there something I can buy to spray around to control the problem? This is the first time we have this problem, so we're at lost about what to do. We feel sorry for the dogs who have flies on them like crazy everyday. Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Sevin dust is awesome stuff, just make sure to be cautious with it. Having grown up on a farm, my parents used it in our yards every year. We used to use it on our garden every year as well. It kept the bugs from eating up the tomatoes and cabbage especially. My dad has worked with chemicals all of his life as a farmer and now works for a chemical company. You aren't supposed to use it when it's over 85 degrees outside, and be sure to let it settle very well before going back out into the yard. I found the manufacturer's site that states these facts also. It has a good list of FAQ's about what can and can't be sprayed and whatnot. http://www.gardentech.com/sevin_fastfacts.asp

I recommend it, just make sure to read about it and know what you can and can't do with it. :)

We're going to try Seven Dust (I think that's what it is), that you dust over your yard to keep bugs out. We have dogs and a three year old who like the backyard but with the bugs and mosquitos, we can't even go out there. For mosquitos and other bugs, they also have a yard spray (both of these items I found at Walmart)...I found the spray in the dog section, of all places, and it's in a box but inside the box is the spray. You wet your yard and then spray the stuff over it and against the fence line or whatever as a barrier. We had 1000's of mosquitos due to a bad drainage problem, and after I sprayed the yard, we had none. I'm getting ready to do it again tonight since we've mowed again and they say to spray it maybe every two weeks or so. Hope that works out for ya!

A spray called "Cutter" It attaches to your water hose and you spray directly on your yard. It works great! You have to reapply every 5-6 weeks. Its about 8-10 dollars at Lowes or Wal Mart. It wont hurt the animals- but dont spray it on them. There is not alot you can do about flies. If you have a covered area- hang ziploc bags full of water-1 or 2 is plenty- it sounds crazy but it works. Something about the way they see through it deters them. I have even seen it done at outdoor restaurants. Good Luck

I have found that the Triazionon liquid that you attach to your water hose and only have too apply once. (but with all this rain I would apply at least twice)It is in the silver and black bottle and it worked wonderfully for me last year. I have not been able to tell this year with all of the rain. I also after treating my yard if I want to sit out use about 3 or 4 of the citronela candles from Wal-Mart. The combination seems to work very well.

ok, for mosquitoes and knats and other things like that get citronella candles. You can purchase them on those long bambo stick things and put them in the ground light them and they will stay away. Or you can buy citronella candles in canister type things at wal-mart/target or even at the dollar store.

For flies...ok this really works...fill up clear bags of water, tie with a twisty tie and hang on a line (like a line made of rope) around the area of your patio or wherever you do not want flies. when the flies fly around that area they see their reflection in that water and it is so large it scares them and they will no longer come around. Look around town into other folks backyard and you will notice clear bags of water hung in various spots. It really works.

I am having the same problems. My children are getting bite and one of my customers works in a hanger and the mosquitos are everywhere. I think this rain is helping them. I am either going to get a professional to spray the house and yard but first will do this spray at home depot. Hook up to the hose and spray. I did it before and it may help. Good luck. G. W

If you can keep the pets inside for a good part of the day, triazinon will do wonders. It is harmful to pets and humans.
Needs to dry before you get on it.
If you can not keep pets inside or let them use front yard
to go potty, then use organocide from lowes. It is organic.
It is safe for humans and pets. After you spray the yard,
make sure your pets are bug free too. Fleas live in the grass
and can leap 50 yeards.
Sevin is good as well...again hazardous to pets and humans
while wet. Can use in powder form. It will cost more as
it is powder and need to cover all ground. Triazinon is granule
and spray.
