How Did She Not Know?!

I delivered my daughter in August. My period returned in Feb, I missed March, and it returned for April and May. Something just didn't seem right to me, my weight began to crawl upwards when it had been moving down, and after I checked myself out in the mirror today, I actually looked pregnant. Well, the test is positive and I'm now one of those stories of 'How did she not know?" I had to call the OBGYN and literally state I have no idea how pregnant I could be. If anything I'm at least a month pregnant if not more..anyone out there have bleeding that resembled a period? I'm not talking about spotting. Were there complications, etc.? I have an appt Friday however will prob have sleepless nights until then.

What can I do next?

My friends 1st pregnancy was not known til she was nearly 4 months pregnant. She had her normal period the entire time. She is very petite about 5'1 & 110 pounds. She didn't understand why she was eating more & had breast tenderness & bloated tummy, til she went to the Dr to find out why she was feeling "different". She had a healthy baby girl with no complications at all. Good luck

I was 4 months pregnant when I found out with my second baby (with my first, I knew I was pregnant within a few weeks).

Same as what happened to you. Periods are spotty and inconsistent when they return after having a baby, so you probably weren't too concerned about tracking it or when it was missed.

But really, it was great finding out so late! When you find out early, you have 9 months of waiting. When you find out late, you only have 5 months of waiting :)

Yes this happens and it can certainly end in a perfectly healthy baby. Your hormones are out of whack, but if you've gone 6 weeks and your preg. test is still coming up positive that is a great sign. It means that the progesterone necessary for maintaining the pregnancy until the placenta is formed was sufficient. That's GREAT.

Keep an eye on your diet, especially if you are BFing and make sure you're getting all the nutrients you need. See a lactation consultant with a lot of experience and see a nutritionist who specializes in neonatal nutrition.

It really is OK to get a few periods, espeically in the hormonal chaos of a quick preg. after birthing. The important thing is you did not lose your peanut. If you had, there is no way your tests would still come up positive.

Congratulations!

Yep, happened to me. Thought I had a period, then next month it skipped for sure....it was nearly 5 months into the pregnancy when they measured and said, hmmmm, either something is really wrong with baby or your due date is off. Original due date: June 6. Revised date after measuring: May 4, actual delivery: May 2 and the team said she looked about a week overdue. Go figure :) It happens!!

I did not know I was pregnant with my second until I was 4 months along. I had been having periods as usual and did not feel anything at all that would lead me to believe I was pregnant. I only found out because I went to the doctor for a pain in my ribcage. I was shocked when the doctor was performing the exam and told me I was pregnant. I did not have periods later in the pregnancy, and my baby boy turned out just fine.

With my oldest I was 4 mo along before I found out... I didn't miss a period till I was about 6 mo into the pregnancy. We never did figure out why - but with all my other ones my period stopped right after I got pregnant. So yes, you can be pregnant, have periods & still carry a healthy baby to full term.

Don't stress about it - you will be fine... just go to your appointment & go from there.

Good luck!!

Don't worry. In my 3rd preg. we were trying to get preg. and thought in the end of May I was preg so I took a test it was neg. In June around the 3rd I got a full period very heavy, cramping and lasted about 7 days. Then I missed my next period I took a test that came back positive so I thought I was about 4-5 weeks so I scheduled my appt and went in at what I thought was 8 weeks and turned out to be 13-14 weeks I was already in my 2nd trimester. I had been preg since May and had at least 1 full period. They said it sometimes happens and not to worry. Everything turned out great it was the quickest pregnancy I had! The rest of the pregnancy was good and the baby was fine. Good luck.

It looks like you've had lots of responses from people who had this happen already, but I'll add myself to the list. I was more than 2 months pregnant (and had recently sworn to my mother-in-law that I was not pregnant because I thought I had my period) when I found out with my first, who is now a healthy 4-year-old and posed no complications during the pregnancy other than the initial "spotting" (but it was so much like a regular period that if I had not inadvertently gone to the doctor for something else, I would not have suspected pregnancy for even longer).

There can be some serious reasons for bleeding during the first trimester, and your doctor will need to rule those out. But if everything seems ok, then there is no reason to worry. As you've learned, it happens in a lot of normal pregnancies.
