How Come Everytime I Cut the Grass I Get Blisters

Silly/dumb question....

I admit I rarely have to cut the grass at my house, as my husband takes care of it. But once in awhile he slacks and I being the do it yourself type of person will get the lawnmower out and do it myself. This happens maybe 3 times a season. Well yesterday this opportunity happened. My husband was inside watching t.v. I was cold from being indoors in the air, so I said why not.

Here is my problem, every time I cut the grass I get a blister. This time I got 3 blisters! Anyone else have this problem? Its a push mower. I used to cut the grass with a push mower when I was younger for my dad and never had this problem. I'm starting to think its something to do with our mower. Aside from wearing gloves while I mow (that will look nice) What can I do?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Yes your all right gloves are better than blisters! What would be better would be my husband mowing it all. Or perhaps a self propelled mower. Come to think of it that is what my dad had.

Oh and glad I'm not alone on getting blisters. Thanks!

My husband wears gloves when he mows. So I assume they're not exactly gentle on the hands. But otherwise, my personal experience is with riding mowers, so I don't know.

A good set of garden/work gloves is a necessary tool.
I get blisters from raking, shoveling, etc and the only thing that keeps them at bay is my gloves (I have a nice leather pair that I use for everything - they fit me like, well, - a glove).
It's either that or repeat what ever action is giving you blisters long enough and frequently so your hands form callouses and then you won't blister anymore.
I prefer the gloves myself.
Anyone who's seen me doing yard work or gardening is not in it for a fashion show.
I have my garden clothes - well worn and somewhat tattered but I don't care if thorns chew them up or if they get stained or dirty.
I have a straw hat - keep the sun off my neck and face - and a bandanna under that - keeps the sweat from running into my eyes.
My hair gets put up, but it strays out every where.
I have my gloves, my tools and frequently knee pads.
I wear gardening clogs (they wash off easy) but my feet tend to get filthy (ahh - but it feels GOOD) and my feet wash off easy, too.
When you're gardening - it's the look of the yard/garden that counts - not the look of the gardener (but we wash up nice after the work is done).

It could be because of how you're holding the mower handle. If you grip it with your thumbs on the bottom then you will get blisters. Try holding it with your whole hand together (I don't know how else to describe it). Otherwise, get gloves. Noone is going to see you and think "geez, she would look soo much hotter without those gloves." Plus, gloves for an hour is way cuter than blistered hands for days. :)

Hi brown eyed girl-

NOT being the 'outside' worker type (read 'deadly' thumb when comes to gardening as well as allergies)...

If I were you...I would find a nice pair of gloves for hubby and wrap them up!!

Honestly...when I did do all the mowing, first mow caused blisters often...even with gloves...but over the course of the season, hands would get 'tougher'.

I imagine it is the sporadic mowing causing blisters to heal completely...and then happen again!

Thank god for teenagers willing to mow!!

Best Luck!
Michele/cat

Not much, lol - the mower is too heavy for you, change your mower to a hover mower, or a ride on. I get blisters every time from my mantis tiller, from using a shovel, hoe, rake.

Whats wrong with wearing gloves?
My husband wears gloves when he mows, and to tell you the truth, its a real turn on afterwards when hes standing in the garage sweaty and dusty, and he peels off the gloves one finger at a time, and then drops all his clothes and comes in to shower.
Get some gloves,, pink ones. Way sexier than blisters!

Other than wearing gloves while you mow - I have gloves on most of the summer, either for weeding, hefting a shovel or the wheelbarrow - I suppose you could try the blister block they sell in the footcare aisle. It's a balm that you put on your feet to prevent friction between your foot and shoe. It works amazingly well with new heels, but I don't know if it would work for you or just make your hands slippery.

nothing really unless you build up those calluses! Not fun I know but since your hands are not use to that type of pressure on the pads that's what will happen!

I'd wear gloves, it'd be the easiest. You could buy some foam pipe insulation (the kind with the slit in it) and put it around the handle.

LOL, this is toooo funny. I mowed our grass for the first time EVER last Sunday. I got a blister on each finger, but I am so super proud of myself for push mowing our yard.

Growing up I was allowed to ride the lawn mower, but never push mow. So I took it upon myself to mow since he had been slacking. With our new law mower it was really easy for me to teach myself. I didnt't mow until my husband left because I didn't want him laughing at me for attempting to mow.

Now I know that next time I mow I need to wear gloves to help protect my hands from blisters. You go girl!

We have a self propelled - so basically my son just has to hold the handle down and walk behind it. But, without gloves he gets blisters...I think from the vibration of the handles.

So, he wears garden gloves when he mows.

Who cares what it looks like while mowing..it is just you and the mower out there. Wear the gloves.

The same things happens to me every time I mow the grass. I attribute it to the fact that my hands are soft from doing dishes and it is just one of those things. The easy solution is to wear gardening gloves to cover your hands.
