We are thinking about moving to the New Orleans area. We have a good life where we are, but my husband was offered an opportunity to transfer to New Orleans. He would work in the French Quarter, so we would be living close to the city, but not in it. For those of you who live there now....would you do it. We would be moving from Indianapolis, Indiana. Honest opinions....good or bad. And if you have any info you think I need to sway my decision, let me have it. Thanks.

What can I do next?

I'll be the third to chime in and say Slidell is a great place to live. My husband commutes to New Orleans for work and he's near the French Quarter. The schools here are so much better than the city and the neighborhoods are too. There's at least one crunchy SAHM group, a decent library, and good homeschooling resources if that's your thing. If you like to garden, the growing season is a lot longer, though I would invest in a good AC unit if you're not a hot weather person.

My family went thru the same thing, although we were ask to move after the huricane arrived. We live in Bay st louis MS which borders Slidell, both Slidell and Bay st. louis are great communities. French Quarter is a great place to visit but not to raise a family, personal opinion, thank you.

Hi M., my family and I moved here to the New Orleans area back in September. My husband is a Marine and well we didn't have a choice in the matter, lol, but he works right around the corner from the French Quarter. We found a house across the lake in Slidell, so it isn't in the city, it is a much better place to raise kids. We really like it here, there is a lot to do in New Orleans. I would give it a try. It is a different way of life here. We moved from California. I hope I helped you in some way. Oh we also have 2 children a 14 month old and a 2 year old.

I think that you and you're hubby need to think it through. Do the pro's and con's. New Orleans is a beautiful place to live. Every city has its problems it just seems our city is under a microscope though. The room for growth is enormous. The rebuilding in some areas is slow but moving along. There is so much culture and heritage to learn about. I am a stay at home mom of four. My husband wrks in the city but we live in Slidell. The schools are really good in Slidell. If the city is not where u wnt to live there are several other towns Metairie, Slidell, Garden District... All of those are worth looking into. I wish you're family the best!
