When we were little my mom always made us edible play dough. Just google it and you will find the directions. Actually now there is probably a million of them. =) It was fun to make things then eat them =)

I have a recipe for "Flubber.":

1st mixture:
2 cups white glue
1 1/2 cups water
food coloring

2nd Mixture:
1 cup water
1 tablespoon Borax

Add 2nd mixture to the 1st mixture and stir constantly until the liquid is gone.

That's all!
This recipe is from my daughter's Teacher. They made it in class.

good luck,
Susan

here's one for play dough. 2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 4 tsp cream of tartar, 2 cups water with food coloring, 2 T oil. mix together in a pan (non-stick is better). cook over medium heat until it forms a hard ball. knead when warm for a smoother consistency. as it becomes half-cooked the dough is hard to mix. keep stirring until all parts are hardened. heres one for peanut butter modeling clay (edible) 1 cup peanut butter, 1 cup non fat dry milk, 2/3 cup powdered sugar measure peanut butter and dry milk in a large bowl and mix well. add powdered sugar and work in with fingers. if to dry, add peanut butter. if to sticky add powdered milk. have fun!!

2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 1 teaspoon cream of tartar, 1 cup water, 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, food coloring. Mix together in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat for three minutes stirring constantly (I use a wooden spoon for best results). The mixture will begin to congeal, then will form a ball in the pan. Take off the heat and carefully (it will be hot!) knead the dough until it's smooth. Store in a plastic bag or container. I've found that those plastic containers from ready made frostings make perfect playdough containers. This recipe is so inexpensive and easy to do that you can also afford to throw it out after the children have played with it. This helps keep down the spread of germs when the children are having those runny nose days.

Another kind of playdough I like to make, especially around holiday time, is to use the same basic recipe, but add a lot of inexpensive cinnamon, and perhaps a little of several other spices (nutmeg, cloves, ginger, allspice). Omit the oil. Rather than cooking it, simply use warm water and mix it up in a bowl. Let the children make small ornaments out of it and allow them to air dry for several days. This makes wonderful gingerbread smelling ornaments. One of my favorite ways to use the spice dough is to take a rather large ball of it, flatten it to about 3/8 inch thickness with my hand. Then I form a heart shape out of the dough. This is easy to do by hand... no need to have the hearts absolutely perfect and symmetrical. Then help a child press their handprint into the heart shape. Take a lead pencil and mark the date and the child's name in the edge of the dough. Don't try to 'write' with the pencil, but just form the letters by making pencil 'dots' in the dough. Let these dry for about a week, turning them over every day to insure even drying and they make perfect holiday gift items that last and last.
You can speed the drying of the spice dough items by putting them in an oven on low temperature, but I prefer the air dried ones.

When I was a little girl, my mom always used this recipe to make play dough for me. It's such a joy to use it with my own kids now, and they love it! It lasts a good long time if you're sure to refrigerate it whenever they're not playing with it, and don't let them leave it out for too long once they're finished. My favorite part as a kid was when my mom would add a tiny bit of flavor extract (usually peppermint, but I often use orange or almond) just to make it smell good. Have fun!

Play Dough
1 cup flour
1 cup water
1/2 cup salt
2 tsp cream of tartar
2 Tbsp oil
Mix all in an aluminum pan
Cook for 3 min.--till dough pulls away from sides of pan
Add a few drops of color and flavoring.

try kool-aid playdough I used to make this for my preschool class, and now for my own son. It stores great in a ziploc bag and is easier to clean off carpet that regular playdough. You can use any flavor of kool-aid to color the dough the only one I ever added food coloring to was the lemonade we like a brighter yellow. Plus it smells great and is 100% non toxic so no worries if the little ones eat it!

What you'll need:

1 cup flour
1/4 cup salt
2 Tbsp cream of tartar
1 envelope unsweetened Koolaid
1 cup water
1 Tbsp. vegetable oil

To make:
1. Mix flour, salt, cream of tartar, Koolaid and water in medium saucepan. Stir in oil.
2. Mix over medium heat for 3-5 minutes until mixture forms a ball in the center of pan. Dough will start darkening in color.
3. Remove from pan {caution: will be HOT}. Knead until soft.
4. Store in airtight container or ziploc bag.
5. Licking is optional
