Hi my name is Meagan, Im having an awful problem with getting holes in all of our clothes. I have no idea where they come from. We recently bought a new washer it is a top loader and I went through it with some panty hose and really fine sandpaper trying to find some sharp snags where it could get our clothes same thing with the dryer but it is really old seriously really old. We have two cycles timed and hot. Im currently working as an EA this summer for summer school trying to save up for a new one doesnt have to be fancy but at least a few more cycles if you know what I mean. But I have no idea where these holes come from they get worse after the was each time too. I do hang up our clothes I thought maybe it was the hangers but I have heard of people who fold and use the dressers get them too. Isnt always old clothes that get the hole I had a brand new never worn shirt go through the wash and came out ruined. Hubby of course did it but holes on the first wash. Does this happen to everyone? How can you fix it? I need some ideas please I dont think some of my clothes could pass for work clothes by now.

What can I do next?

No clue...having the same issues and seems no one else has any really good ideals neither. Sorry !! Just wanted to say I know that feeling and since I bought this new washer I have had the same issues as you. Thinking about going back to the older machines at least they didn't grab at the clothing and tear them up ! it IS my washer this I do know.

I have a hole issue too.. I never would have guessed this many wemon share my problem!! I how ever dont think mine is related to the washer... I have holes in every shirt I own!!! They are all in the same spot... In the middle of my shirt towards the bottom of the shirts at about waist height... I think I have solved the mystery though... Im pretty sure it is from rubbing aginst the kitchen counters... Washing dishes, preparing food, leaning over cutting coupons... Im now starting to wear an apron to see if this helps.

If we were back East, I would suggest moths, but sounds like it is time for a "new" dryer. Try posting on Freecycle for Dryer Wanted.

Hi M., Is this with your husbands and your clothes too? The reason why I ask is I went thru the same thing, but only with my kids clothes. All of a sudden there were little holes in their shirts and shorts. At first I just threw them away but then it was in more...so I asked them about it and they were doing it themselves! Just thought they would 'pick' a hole in their clothes! They liked sticking their fingers in them! So needless to say, we had a serious talk and I told them all future clothes they ruin will be paid for from their bank accounts...no more holes! So just a thought and something for you to check into...good luck!

Could it be moths? It is moth season at our house right now. Hmmm, just a thought.

The first thing that comes to mind is bleach (whether you use it in your wash or any bleach-containing products used around the home). I imagine you'd know if it was bleach causing the holes, but thought I'd bring it up in case that clue helps in figuring out the problem.

I used to have a top loader. I had clothes get caught underneath the agitater a few times and the clothes ended up having holes or tears. I now have a front loader and do not have that problem anymore. Maybe try doing smaller loads & see if that helps.

We've had the same problem with our front loader, although they took a little longer to develop. I think some fabrics are too thin to survive the high speed spin and the holes come from being physically stretched through the holes in the drum. The holes in our shirts fit the pattern inside the drum almost exactly. I switched from the high speed to the medium speed spin and haven't seen any holes in our newer clothing items. Hope this helps!

I have the same problem. But it's only in my clothes. There are none in my sons and only one in my husbands. I really don't know what it is. At first I thought it might be moths but at the time my clothes and my husbands clothes were in the same closet. So that made no sense. We have a new washer, less then 3 years old so I don't think it's that. I really have no idea what it is but it's driving me nuts!!! I buy a shirt and I can only where it once or twice before there are holes everywhere. Some are worse then others. I have no advise for you just wanted to let you know you're not alone!

Hi M., I am curious to also find out what kind of advice you will receive as I need the advise too! Ours is a top load washer too. It is weird because most of my husband's white under shirts end up w/holes old & new & we have no idea how that happens either! We haven't had the problem w/any other clothes. Maybe a few of my sons white under shirts too but not all of his. My husband @ least has 1 hole in almost all his white shirts, if not more than 1 & it sucks. I don't know if it is the washer or the dryer? We put our whites in the dryer & most of our other clothes we hang dry.

You said the dryer was old? Check to see if there are any edges where it has worn down in the metal. We had this problem with an old dryer and it turned out the metal wore down on the door where it would snag the clothes causing a hole. We found a dryer real cheap at the salvation army store. Another place to look would be on craigslist..lol! Good luck! I know how frustrating it can be when cash is tight.

Oh my gosh M.- I was seriously just going to do a post on this today and ask the same exact question. I get little tiny holes in EVERY single one of my knit shirts. The holes are usually in the same spot which I find very strange too. I always get 1-3 tiny holes in the center of the shirt near the bottom (like where my button hole would be). At first I thought my cat (who has back claws) was the culprit. But I figured out it was him when one shirt I bought at Shade got 3 little holes after 1 washing in the machine. I have absolutely no advice for you, I just wanted you to know that you are not alone. I can't wait to read through your responses.

Hi,
I had just bought some new maternity shirts..wore them then washed and one came out with at least 20 holes..thankfully it was not an expensive shirt. However..I figured out my issue. I was washing my jeans with my shirts (darks) and the zipper and zipper teeth were tearing up my clothes. I figured this out because my other shirts were getting the holes in the front right at my zipper area. I now wash all the jeans in one load and my shirts in another. Hope that is your issue..its a cheap easy fix!!

Maybe you could put your clothes inside sweater bags or inside pillow cases to avoid the problem until you can get a new one.

I end up with holes right at my waist, probably from my jeans, but also in AZ we have hard water and that can lead to holes in our clothes. My children often have unexplained holes in their clothes. I started noticing that they were especially bad if they had been playing in the water and/or mud. I haven't really found a solution, but you're not alone. Good luck!
