Hmm What Do You Think? Teething or Ear Infection?

I am calling the nurse today, but I wanted to know how things have been in your house.

My son told me Friday night that there is something pointy in his mouth.. translation 6 year molars. Confirmed by the dentist. Saturday he got a fever, I did not think much of it, but the left ear has been consistantly higher than the right when taking his temp, this also hapens to be the side that the "pointy thing" was on.

So my question is this.. do you think the fever is just a product of teething (heat from the tooth breaking through), or do you think it could be ear infection?

He is 4.5. and told me last night that his head hurt, but he said nothing about his ears hurting.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The nurse said that it could be either way, I will error on the side of caution and I have an apt at 5 pm for him tonight. If infected, we will get the meds, if not peace of mind it is just "teething".

They are pretty certian it was an ear infection. His ear was so dirtly she could not see, but since it hurt she decided that it was an an infection. He is already doing better, no fever so I think we were right.

I would have the doctor look in his ear. After so many days if it is an infection, it probably needs to be treated with an Rx.

My kids always ran a low grade fever when teething, and teething can make your jaw ache. Especially molars. Teething can also get your sinus' draining.

I would probably get him checked for an ear infection.

Have his ears checked. If it's an infection, you can treat it, and if not, you'll have peace of mind.

Well, sounds like you are getting him checked, but just for the record, research shows that 87% of ear infections clear up on their own, without the use of antibiotics. If it is an ear infection, please ask your MD about this before giving the antibiotic. He/she can still write the script, and you can have it filled a couple days later if there is still pain.
Good luck!

I wouldn't blame teething for a fever over 100.5*. Any higher and it's likely an infection.

Allergies are really bad right now. My son said he felt fluid in his ear last week and by the following night he had a fever.

My daughter got an ear infection when she got new teeth, so it could be both.
