Hiring a Family Friend as an Au Pair

I am a Local Coordinator for an Au Pair agency and the only truly legal way to get her to stay with you for one year as an au pair is through an agency. J1 visas are for exchange visitors, like au pairs, that's what she would get when coming through us. It is also so much easier for all of you. You don't have to figure out how to apply for a different type of visa, having to sponsor her yourself. I will be happy to help you with everything. We currently have a promotion that would allow you to apply for free and save an additional $300 off the program fee. The person you are considering as an au pair would have to apply to our agency in her home country in the meantime. I recommend you consult an immigration attorney. I did so when I wanted to see how to bring one of my APs back (rules have now changed + APs can come back for a 2nd year, but the one I wanted had begun university + got another job using her English skills). The consultation fee was $50. Well worth it compared to the amount (literally thousands!) an AP company would charge.

I don't know about the visa, but I would strongly suggest that you set up a contract between you and her and that you try and stick to it.
I came here without an agency and had a contract with the family I stayed with, but well, I wish I had used an agency. What I am trying to say is, that since you know her already it will be a whole lot different having the employer- employee relationship and remember, she will stay with you for one year.
