Higher Education - Figuring Out Direction

Hi moms, I graduated from college in 1989 with a BA in Communications/English - you know, the unmarketable degrees - LOL! At the time, college was a way to get away from home, and I really didn't know who I was or what my strengths, gifts were (I wish I could go back in time and do it over). Now that I have a much better idea of that, I'd like to develop it.

How do you figure out which degree to pursue? Are there tests out there to help determine the best direction?

Thanks very much!

What can I do next?

Try going to http://www.ioscar.org/tx/. It is an assessment that was developed by the Texas Workforce Commission. It is very good. I personally like the Work Values report better than the Interest Profiler but both can provide good feedback.

The colleges such as community colleges offer free tests for students to tell them what fields to pursue. You should be able to find one online to do for free. Try to google under 'career tests' and so on.

Since you have a bachelors you can get a masters in any thing you want. you just might have to take a few 'booster' courses. Just take your GRE and start applying to colleges.

What are you interested in? Figure out what different fields that might be, go to the university website and email a faculty member in the different areas.Don't be afraid to find people on their website and email them questions. They usually love to help and answer questions. I wouldn't contact the counselors-they're usually too busy and don't give the right information anyways.

Good luck!!!

There are some online tests interests/ aptititue tests out there. You can do them right at home and the suggestions/ reports are sent to your email. Costs about 10-15$.

We had our senior take one recently.

I remember doing aptitude tests in high school. You can also take aptitude tests online for free. I think most workforce centers/ employment centers have them. I would be surprised if colleges don't have tests like that too. The best thing, though, is to just go visit a college and talk to one of the admissions specialists. They have tons of great information and if they can't answer all of your questions, they will be able to steer you to the right resources. Before I decided to go back to school I went to a few different colleges and talked to a few different admissions people, and they all were extremely helpful. Free and sound advice!

Hi P.,
My hubby and I have both made drastic career changes in our lives (me 2 years after I finished my first degree; my hubby now).

Both of us found our new area of interest by, first, deciding on a general area of interest (for me, medicine; for hubby, business). We then went to different local universities and spoke to counselors about our specific interests (I did not want to go into nursing, or be an MD; hubby had no clue). The counselors were able to describe specific degrees and tracks of education, offered at their schools, which fit our interests, and personalities.

Hey, good luck!

You might want to try taking a Personality inventory. Try reading MBTI ( the Meyrs-Briggs Type Indicator " Introduction to Type and Careers" by Allen L Hammer"
Just remember that in 3 , 5 or 10 years from now you will be the same age but you will have your degree.
Pray this helps.

I have to second making an appointment with the career counseling center at you local community college. They offer the testing for free, and unlike taking the test online, the counselors will help you with interpretation and guidance. Then go from there...
