High Levels in Blood Test

I saw the nurse for my first visit yesterday. She was going over my lab work and said that I was clearly pregnant because of the very high levels in my blood. I didn't think of it at the time but is that normal? Could I be pregnant with twins... since my "levels" are so high?

What can I do next?

Hi K.,

Congrads on being pregnant:) When I was pregnant with my twins, I went in and had all my blood work and that done not know I was having twins at the time. They called me in and said there was something in my blood work and my Dr. wanted me to come in the next day for an ultrasound. I went in the next day and found for the unltrasound and she said yeah there's baby a and there's baby b. I'm not sure what was off in my blood work, but they did think I was having twins and did the ultrasound to find out. You can always ask your dr. what that means, if they tell you they want an ultrasound and it's still then they prolly think you are having twins. Good Luck!!

the range of HCG per week of pregnancy is so wide there is really no way to tell if there is more than 1 baby just by blood levels.

You could be...your levels that they are talking about are supposed to double and when I had twins, mine more than tripled. If it's something they are concerned with, they probably would have ordered an ultrasound. Either way, congrats!!!!

This is really hard to say.

When you are pg, your body makes the hormone HCG, this is what pg tests detect and say you are/aren't pg. Your body only makes this when you are pg or on meds with HCG in it (and not many do). Your HCG levels rise as you get farther along in your pg, they double every day. So a Dr can give a close due date based on your HCG levels and how fast they raise.
When you are pg w/ twins, your levels raise even faster as you now have 2 babies making the HCG hormmone.

If all your nurse said was your levels were high it could be twins or it could mean high for your current due date and you are farther along than you/they first thought.

If you or your Dr think it's twins you should have an u/s done early on, that really is the only way to know for sure.

On a side note twins are so much work, but sooo much more fun. Mine are 9 months now.

Congrats either way on the new baby(s).

She is probably talking about your HGC levels. Doesn't mean you are having twins.

Call and ask what your levels were and for them to explain. The levels should double regularly...high levels are good.
