Go to a dermatologist and have his scalp evaluated. What might have been excema, psoriasis or dry scalp might have been misdiagnosed as lice.

Dry scalp, dandruff, fungal infection, eczema, contact dermatitis, reaction to soap or chlorine....there are a lot of reasons for itchy heads. I just scratched my head now, because I was thinking about it. LOL If his scratching is happening all the time then take him to a dermatologist to find out why. If he only scratches his head occasionally and it freaks you out then you might have lice-related PTSD, as it were, and seeing a problem where none exists.

Some lice treatments or other dermatological treatments can be kind of harsh. Try moisturizing his scalp with pure coconut oil, and keep his hair fairly short. Ask your pharmacist for a recommendation for a very mild and safe shampoo for kids with itchy scalps. They often have products behind the counter that are not on the regular shelves that help with itching or dry skin.

Not sure what you're asking. Do you think he still has lice? If you're not sure what to look for, I'm sure someone at your doctor's office or school could help you.

My son gets an itchy head from allergies, eczema and he also has dandruff. It's easy to see what is causing the itchiness. Shampoos can also cause itchiness.

I assume you are sure that he no longer has lice. It sounds like maybe he's having a reaction to the shampoo or conditioner you are using. Try switching to something really gentle, like a baby shampoo, and don't use conditioner to see if that helps. If not, you might need to make an appointment with a pediatric dermatologist.

My first thought was that if he had any autism or anything like that that it might almost be a nervous tick/stim thing.

If not the other advice given seems reasonable.

An itchy scalp, as others have said, can have many other causes besides lice. There are a variety of skin conditions as well as reactions to certain shampoos (or too much shampooing). If you aren't finding lice or nits, then this is probably something else. We can't tell you "what to do" though - we can't see his scalp and whether there are red spots or flakes of dandruff or anything else. Do you re-treat him for lice every time he itches, even if you see no lice/nits? The products themselves could be causing the problem.

You need to make a list of what you are using, write down when you make a change and see if there is a reduction or increase in the itch, and whether anything changes if you use something like olive oil (which some people use - easier on short hair than long). Keep a journal, including what foods he eats and when the itching increases in relation to that, and have the doctor take a look at him.

Itching/scratching can also be habits or connected to emotions too, so be prepared to look at everything.

I'm going to assume that every time he itches his head you panic and check for lice only to find none. Yes that would be frustrating to me also. If it isn't lice then it could be an allergic reaction to anything, eczema, psorasis, a bug bite, etc. Your best bet might be use a baby shampoo (very gentle shampoo that isn't known to cause issues) and no conditioner. See if that helps. If not then move onto allergies. If all else fails you can contact the doctor after you've tried a couple things and get some guidance.

What does a lice treatment a year ago have to do with anything now?

If he still had lice, you would see signs of it. So I'm sure that doesn't have anything to do with his current itchy head. Could be dandruff, eczema, a reaction from shampoo or other hair products, or any number of things that aren't lice. Get in touch with your pediatrician if you are really worried.

That said, my DD and I both had lice last year and I get so paranoid every time my head itches, or I see her scratch her head, or I see any kind of speck in her hair. My head itches right now just talking about it. So I can see why you might still be worried. But if it's been ongoing and you haven't been seeing signs of lice, there is some other issue. Good luck.
