Hi Las Vegas area moms,

My family and I are relocating to Las Vegas next month, and we're not sure where to live. We have three boys, ages 7, 4, and 3 and our main focus is great schools and a safe neighborhood. In your opinions, what area has better schools and is safer - Henderson or Summerlin? Thank you!

What can I do next?

My husband and I lived in Green Valley Ranch for a few years. We lived down the street from GVR/Resort. It was nice with a lot of upscale retail and eateries and pretty much whatever you need. When we visit Vegas for fun we always check out how much construction they've done...it's crazy! the area we lived in has a lot offer, including paseos, nice parks, community center with activities for the kids, kid friendly mall for those blistering hot days, etc. I also liked it because it was so new and everything was nice and well kept. Delivered my son at St. Rose Hospital, I had the best care and it was so nice/clean. I didn't go to Summerlin much, but it didn't have that "homey" community feeling like GVR. I don't know what your budget is, but there are areas that you might want to avoid...older and ghetto issues. So, a bigger house for cheap is not always better, remember that when you're looking there. It can be tempting and we learned a lot! The house we ended up buying was 2600sf w/pool, gated community, etc. and there were houses for same price, twice as big in less desirable hoods. We chose quality over quantity! Let me know if you have any questions about anything specific.

I love Henderson. I have a 7 yr old and a 5 yr old, and they both go to Twitchell, one of the best schools in southern Nevada. Lots to do in Henderson for families! Also, close enough to freeway. I have lived in north las Vegas, mountains edge and Henderson, and definitely love Henderson the best

Henderson, but the "new" neighborhoods like Anthem or Green Valley, not the 'old' Henderson areas. We've lived in Anthem for 4 1/2 years now and I understand that the traffic is much worse in the Summerlin area, and Shannon already warned you about the spaghetti bowl area. Southern Highlands (south-west part of Vegas) is supposed to be nice too.

Hello and welcome,
I'm a Las Vegas native and I have lived in Henderson (Green Valley/Anthem area) for the last 14 years. The schools in my area, although they are all the same school district, are very highly rated. Our neighborhood is safe and hasn't felt the normal economic downturn that most neighborhoods face as they age. We have all the amenities and traffic isn't too bad. The airport is close but not too close. Henderson has more parks per household than Vegas or Clark County. We have several great libraries nearby as well as an awesome Multi-Generational Center with Aquatics in Green Valley Ranch. My vote is Henderson unless you have to commute through the "spaghetti bowl" everyday. (I-15 and US-95 junction in the freeway system. If you have to drive through that everyday you might want to pick another area.) Good luck with your choice.

My vote is for Henderson. I live in Southern Highlands and like it, but if I had to buy again, it would be in Henderson for the same reasons the others mentioned. The parks are awesome and the rec centers and libraries are terrific. The best mall around, the Galleria is close, too. Good luck with your decision.
