Hemp Necklace Means Stoner?

My 16 year old texted me earlier saying that the school took her hemp necklace saying its "drug parafenalia"
I am extremly heated right now becuase she doesnt wear much actual jewelry, it usually is something hemp, she makes necklacees/bracelets/ and since shes getting a cat is even now working on a hemp collar for him
also the one the woman took is a certain one her mother got her a couple years before she passed away.
and shes been wearing it for years, its just today that they take it
I have a mind to go down to the school, get it, then go to her class and give it back to her and tell her to put it on.
What would you do in this situation?
Also, i just remembered, her bag and her makeup case are both hemp aswell, and she said she still has her bracelet. It is just the necklace they took.

What can I do next?

Go and get it.
Her Mom, got it for her. It is a special gift from her deceased Mom.

Hemp jewelry, is not drug paraphenalia.

Paraphernalia would have to mean that the necklace itself is used in a particular drug activity. I am surprised this teacher could be so knowledgeable about recognizing a hemp necklace and then be so stupid as to not know that there is no THC in the actual hemp material. I would call the school, talk to the principal, and demand it back. And let them know that hemp is not a drug, and is used in a variety of industrial purposes. In fact, Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence on hemp paper. Sounds like she needs a little schooling herself.
And no, I don't associate hemp with stoners, hippies, or potheads. It's just another type of industrial material to me. Probably one that should be farmed in this great state to fill the whole that tobacco left as cash crop.

Hmmm, since the word "hemp' actual MEANS cannibas plant, I can see where the school is coming from.

(Had to google it, even as an aging hippy myself)

I can understand the school's point of view with this one.

Hemp=Pot
Pot=illegal drug
Illegal drug=Not allowed in school

Sigh, sorry.

Go get the necklace (no sense being all pissed off at the school, I've heard of MORE ridiculous rules than that one). Explain to your daughter sometimes there are rules we ALL have to follow, even when they don't apply to us.

Meanwhile keep encouraging her artistic abilities, ambitions.

Least that's what I would do.

Well my 8th grade daughter just ventured out of the girl cave, so I asked her what her take on hemp jewelry was. She had no idea what I was talking about. So she read your post, then googled 'hemp necklaces' which brought up a zillion pictures.

She says 'pssh, everyone I know wears one of those, I had no idea it had anything to do with pot'.

(And she would rebel against it if she did, all three of my kids are very, uh, anti-drug of any kind for any reason, including alcohol. How they got that way Ill NEVER know, cause I'M certainly not, tehehe, thing about parenthood, you never know what you're gonna get!)

Go get the necklace they will not give it back to her. Then tell them plain & clear her deceased mother gave this to her before her passing it is something that she feels close to her to her mother this is why she wears it & hasn't taken it off...
BTW hemp here in my area usually is an indicator that they do smoke or dress like a hippy & wear hemp jewerly,it was very popular back when I was in HS but don't pay nay attention on who wears it & who doesn't.So what it means now a days no clue

I say have her make a nice cheesy 70s lookin' macrame owl and take THAT to school. I know hemp isn't the same as jute but it would be funny to see the principle's reaction. Those stupid owls were more "druggie" than her necklace.

Go get it right away...before they loose it!

Be polite. But be honest...explain the situation, this came from her deceased mom, she hasn't taken it off since she got it...all of it.

Hemp can signify stoner....but it mostly implies 'natural' to me...ya know...organic, granola, crunchy, hippy, etc.

I love hemp stuff and would never judge anyone for wearing hemp material and neither should the school...but have them show you in the school dress code or rules or whatever where it specifically states that anything made from 'hemp' is considered drug paraphernalia...if it does say it take the necklace home and have it waiting fir her when she gets home...if it doesn't say it find her and give it to her!

Poor girl, she is probably sad, worried and pissed off...I know I would be.

Go get it!!

I would go to the school. Get the COMPLETE story. Explain that her mom gave it to her and it has sentimental value, Get the necklace back.

There are always 2 sides of the story. GO get both sides of the story then make your decision. BUT still get the necklace back for her.

I'm sorry she is going through this.

Hi A.
I so understand your annoyance. Good on you and your daughter for using hemp.
It is a fantastic product ,brill for making clothes, shoes and not h*** o* the environment.
Hemp does not mean DRUGS, it signifies that one is respectful of the environment.
One CANNOT get "stoned " from hemp.
If I were you I would go down to the school and state your annoyance in a calm, intelligent way.Tell them to return the necklace to your child and not so narrow minded. Maybe do this in the privacy of the school office. If they don't listen get permission first from your daughter before entering her classroom. If she doesn't mind ,go for it.
Best of luck

I would go down there and take care of it immediately. I would ask questions in the office BEFORE you go off on them just to make sure there is not any information that you are not aware of. If it is as she says - I would light them up!!

So, if your daughter is wearing a hemp dress or hemp blouse, would they also take that away and call her a "stoner". Sounds like very old fashioned thinking to me. I'd probably talk to the principal or vice principal about the issue of adults assigning labels to teenagers based upon how they dress. I'd also point out that the hemp jewelry is your daughter's artistic creation and nothing more. Stoners also wear Hanes t-shirts, blue jeans, high heels and/or tennis shoes so why stop with the hemp if they want to make a statement about school drug policies?

I'd be upset too.

Okay, so I just asked my 14 year old if wearing a hemp necklace meant you are a stoner and he said "No". So, in our town teens don't make that association.

However, I have not checked our high school's handbook on the subject. I know that our school has limits on clothing and accessories that the students can wear. E.g., they cannot wear anything with a skull on it. So my son's collection of skull T-shirts, necklaces and ring are relegated to Saturday wear.

So, take a deep breathe, check the dress code - then go to the school and talk to the principal. They should at least return her property even if they persist that she cannot wear it at school. It may be that the "woman" who took the necklace interpreted the regulations differently - or just enforced an existing rule that has not been enforced before.

Good Luck.

I always thought hemp jewelry was just a hippie thing. J/K....kind of. But I think you should talk to the school, at the very least it should be returned for her to wear at home.

Talk to the school and tell them you intend on giving it back to her. Explain you believe they are stereotyping and you file a complaint if they give you more problems.

But..

If they say they will take it away again I would not risk it. Have her leave it at home because the next time they take it it might get "lost". That would be more devastating than not being able to wear it.

As an outsider, I'd say sleep on it. By all means, if its a sentimental piece retrieve it for safe keeping. But you won't be doing your daughter any good by making a scene.

I would be furious! Not sure how I would handle it but I would do some research on it and if anywhere it stated that it was 'natural' or "not drugs", I would print it and take it to the school. Do they think she is going to smoke it???? This world is so stupidly politically correct it is embarrassing!
