I am in search for helpful tips for my mother.. she is battling cancer at it worst! medicare and Medicaid have turned her down.. I am in search for a second opinion towards our cancer battle.. but what is more important since it is only me who is here for her support I was wondering if there is any insurance that may accept her at this time... as well as cancer societies and insurance companies help any one?? I am more leaning toward life insurance being that she is getting the help she needs as far as the cancer... but as to further our search we are in need of both...

She will not qualify for life insurance. It sounds harsh, but insurance companies need a return on their investment. They are banking on people paying more in premiums over the years than they will actually pay out. If she is ill the chances of her paying more to them than they will pay out upon her death are slim and they will not take that chance.

As for health insurance, I don't think she will get it either. My FIL was treated at NIH in Bethesda for free. It maybe worth looking into getting into NIH, maybe her doctors can recommend it. I don't know how my FIL got in, so I can't help you there. He got top of the line care at NIH, but they did use his case for research purposes since he did have a rare form of cancer.

No, not a single life insurance company will touch her. Thing about what you are asking, I will pay you 1,000 dollars and there is a really good chance you will pay us 100,000 in a couple years. Would you take that risk?

Why is Medicare and Medicaid turning her down?

You are kind of tossing different insurances around here, do you mean life as your title says or health as the rest of your question covers?

Is your mother getting treatment at a hospital or cancer center? What kind of cancer does she have and what is the prognosis? Ask the social workers at the hospital-they may be able to direct you to things in your area that might help. Depending on the type of cancer she has, there may be some resources available to help. There may also be some patient assistance programs at some of the pharmaceutical companies to help with the cost of the drugs and the income levels are much higher for eligibility. Check out Partnership for Prescription Assistance and list the drugs and it will connect you with the proper website to apply. Medicare is designed for pts 65 yrs old and older and end stage renal patients. Medicaid is a national/state program for low income-the requirements vary by state. Good luck. Sorry your mother is ill.

Mommy:

I'm truly sorry that your mother is battling cancer.

I'm confused as to what insurance you want. You have stated Medicare and Medicaid have turned her down - that is HEALTH insurance. But you also state she is getting the help she needs as far as the cancer. So who is helping her? Did she find a company that covered her care?

In regards to LIFE insurance. That's a bet against yourself. Insurance companies know that people will die eventually - however - they are expecting people to be around for DECADES not a few years or worse - a few months....so they won't insure her.

Do you mean health insurance? or life insurance? Life insurance won't touch her if she's dying, it's pretty much saying sure we know you're dying and we'll give you money when that happens. They won't even give life insurance to a smoker these days.

Health insurance, is going to be hard to find too although I'm surprised that medicare/medicaid won't cover her. I always assumed they were a "last resort" when you didn't have health insurance. Not that they want to rush out and help you, but did medicare/medicaid give you any idea what your options might be? I would contact your local county dept of social services (where you may apply for medicaid) or health services and find out if you have any options.

I'm so sorry about your mother. I'm also sorry to tell you that she cannot get life insurance.

It is very important that you do NOT sign any papers at the hospital or doctor's office accepting responsibility of any kind for her care. If you do, you will receive tremendous bills from them that you are legally obligated to pay. I know that your mother would not want you having to pay every penny you have towards her care and then ALSO have to file bankruptcy because of the hospital and doctor bills. Families who do this also face it when it's the worst time in their lives - after the cancer patient dies.

Your mom will not be able to get life insurance. Life insurance is something you must get when you are healthy and have a very low risk factor of dying.

Life insurance is something you get in case you get an illness and die. It is to be used to pay outstanding medical bills and burial costs.

Since she is battling an illness that might take her life she does not qualify for life insurance at this time. It is usually planned and paid over time so it can build up, like money in the bank.

If she passes with outstanding bills they'll take any money she has in the bank, her home, stuff, to pay the bills then if there is anything left it goes to her beneficiary's. If she has no money when this time comes they right it off as a bad debt and take the loss. They really can't get money out of someone who does not owe the bill.

I am so sorry you're going through this. My MIL had small cell cancer on her liver. She did chemo for a short time but got a stomach virus that weakened her beyond all help.

If you are just trying to find medical treatment for your mom and she can't get assistance through programs that normally help financially I don't know what else to do either.
