Help with Wording on Ultrasound Impression

Hello ladies. Can anyone please tell me what this means? My mom had an ultrasound done and she received this in the mail. It says "hepatomegaly with increased hepatic echogenicity may be secondary to hepatic steatosis vs. non-specific hepatocellular disease is evident of an obvious solid mass." "Limited evaluation of the pancreas."

It just says to follow up with your doctor, which we already have another appt. scheduled. But can anyone tell me what that all means? I know something with the liver.

Thank you!

What can I do next?

Well I can tell you what i know from my schooling and that is just the medical words that are in there
Hepatomegaly-enlargement of the liver
increased hepatic echogenicity-something to with how the liver looked on the ultrasound
hepatic steatosis-fatty liver
non-specific hepatocelluar diease-fatty growth of the liver
Limited evaluation of the pancreas-just means that they could barely see the pancreas when the more than likely should have been able too.
Hope this helps a little!

That is terrible. just that it is not understandable. I've had some medical terminology and it is all greek to me. I'd say go on line and get some medical terminology and look up the terms you do not understand. It should make things a lot clearer til you see the dr.

Hi, I am a nurse and had to take medical terminology so here goes: Hepatomegaly is enlargement of the liver. Echogenicity probably refers to the way it actually appeared on the ultrasound (thicker); may be related to; steat (usually refers to fat) so maybe there is some fattening of the liver vs. liver disease (at the cellular level). Evident of an obvious solid mass (there is an obvious solid mass) Did that help at all? This isn't definite but it gives you a little more detail to understand what is going on.

I'm not sure how you got the results without seeing the doctor first, but I would call up the dr. office,t.t. a nurse, tell them you have the results (read it to the nurse) and you want to see the doctor asap (so you are not sitting at home worrying). Hopefully, they will accomodate you. Good luck.

Michelle did a good job with the definitions.
sounds like there is a tumor of some sort in the liver, but by ultrasound they can't tell what type of tumor...could just be a fatty tumor (which is not cancer), or could be something else (sorry...)
it's hard to say why they couldn't see the pancreas very well.
it's always scarey when you get the report before seeing the doctor...but the doctor will be able to tell you alot more. he also has access to any lab results that they have, or any other tests.
don't panic yet....it's a limited test. her doctor will probably want to do more tests, maybe even a biopsy.
hope that helps even more.

Hello,

I'm an Ultrasound Tech so I will try to explain the letter to you.

Hepatomegaly means that the liver is enlarged.
Increased echogencity means the liver looks "brighter" which can mean a "fatty" liver. It basically means that there are fat deposits in the liver which is "beginning of liver dx". This stage is reversable. Did the letter say they saw a mass in the liver or they can not rule out a mass? The pancreas is difficult to see with Ultrasound in most cases because of bowel gas.

If you have any more questions, please write me back! I hope this helps!
