Help with Persistent Rash on 3 1/2 Year Old's Bottom!

My 3 1/2 year old son has had this persistent rash on his bottom for about a month now. It's only on his buttocks cheeks and it seems to flare up after he takes a bath and he itches it while he's in the water. I've been putting Balmex cream on it twice a day (or more if I can) and it seems to almost disappear but there's always still a very slight red dryish skin area which I've been keeping moisturized. I periodically moisturize him after a bath and he doesn't wear pull-ups any longer except at night and I change him immediately when he gets up into underwear. I always keep him dry and clean (as I'm a neat/clean freak). I thought it might be heat rash at first and was reading that I shouldn't put anything on it and keep it dry but when I tried that it seemed to get worse. I think I'm finally going to make a doctor's appointment for this coming week but was wondering if anyone else had any ideas on how to treat this. P.S.-he never had diaper rash as an infant and he doesn't have allergies to food or anything else. Any ideas????

Sounds like eczema. His skin may need a different soap for the bath. The doctor appointment is a good idea. Is it right after a bath night so the doctor will see it at its worst? Good Luck.

If it isn't ecxema (sp??) it could be psoriasis. My son has had this since birth. It is a genetic skin condition (I have it) an is annoying but basically harmless. I would take him to Dr. and get a referral for a dermatologist.

Hi,
You mentioned itching right after the bath. Is there a soap, bubblebath etc. that could be causing the problem? Dove soap is very mild, and we all use it. Also, Eucerin cream works well for sore or itchy bottoms!

Good luck.

might be a sign of yeast/fungus,especially if it itches. He might not like this for a few days, but after his bath, powder the area with some baking soda. Also, try giving him a probiotic (on empty stomach) for a couple of months to help reset his intestinal flora, which might also be off.
If he eats a lot of sugar, might want to cut that back also. It's a sign of imbalance, and the medical doc might only give you something topical or antibiotics, which will be worse for him in the long run...Hope that helps.
We see lots of kids in our practice with issues like this that we've helped with diet modifications and adjustments to boost the immune system and calm the nervous system.

My daughter had the same exact problem! I bought a new bath mat, would put extra lotion on her bottom, etc and nothing would work. She has pretty sensitive skin, so I took all the soaps we were using away and started using Dove sensitive skin body wash (the one for adults) and she hasn't been bothered ever since. Try it

Kids get bombarded with chemical irritants all the time and it builds up in there system causing all types of skin irritation. You may want to switch to chlorine free diapers, use plain glycerine soap or something without sodium laurel sulfates in it (hard to find). Also no lotions whatsoever, they are riddled with chemicals, always carefully choose cosmetics that are organic and EU compliant. Switching to non-toxic cleaning with vinegar and water, check out www.care2.com, will really help since that's where most of our household pollution comes from, leaves residues and is not so clean after all. I have a friend who's toddler girl is always having diaper rashes and she said the only thing that works is a lavender and aloe spray from Young Living called lavaderm. She tried lavender from the health food store, but that didn't help at all because other essential oils are just perfume. They also have a diaper rash ointment I originally bought for stretch marks and I'll be happy to send you a little to see if it helps. You can order from www.youngliving.org/amoreyr. You also get a rebate on your first purchase so it comes out as wholesale.
Good Luck!

It could possibly be a yeast infection on his bottom. My daughter got them a few times and the diaper rash creme will not take care of it. If that is what it is the doc can prescribe Nystatin or something similar and it takes care of it in a day or so.

Hello. To help you out a bit, I will say that my son, Jacob is very sensitive to Balmex. I also tried Butt Paste but I just didn't like it. So now I use Aquaphor for everything! It clears up diaper rash in practically a day and I use it for my 3 month old as well. Good Luck!!

S., Could it be the soap you're washing him with or whatever chemical you're cleaning your tub with that he's having a reaction to? I would definitely check with your doctor. Everyone gave you some great remedies. The few times my son had diaper rash, pure cornstarch worked best. Balmex the least!

S. - This is an old remedy but it works. Just brown some flour in a pan until it turns brown. No water. Put it on your baby's bottom and that will put an end to your problem. Doesn't sound to pleasant but this remedy came from a little old lady and it sure worked for me. GOOD LUCK.....

I would check with a doctor. Could be a food allergy. Milk? Food Coloring? Or something else going on wrong down there.

It sounds similar to when my daughter had eczema -- flares up in the bath, itches, goes away when treated but leaves a slight red dryish skin area. If the pediatrician thinks its eczema, I'd recommend smearing some vaseline on it twice a day and rubbing it in well. It took a couple of weeks, but that's what got rid of my daughter's eczema for good.

Good luck!

If he's sitting in water and gets the rash after that (or it's getting worse) I'd try to give him a shower instead of a bath, so he's not sitting in the tub. It could be residue from your shampoo or soap, or something else that may be in the tub between baths/showers. I would also take him to the doctor, to rule out anything more serious.

Sorry to hear about the rash. Some people are allergic to the chemicals used to treat municipal water, my oldest is one of them. Try a shower so that he's not sitting in the water. For rashes on all of my kids, even my middle son's eczema, I use Melaleuca's Renew lotion, it works great!! Also, if you aren't already giving him a daily vitamin, START, they can help his immune system to tackle the problem too. You can e-mail me and I can help you place an order: ____@____.com

Hi S.,

I'm with Shawna, it sounds like a yeast infection, they are very persistent. Try any of the creams for yeast infection or talk with your pharmacist or doctor and they can help you further on what to use.

Hope it works,

Hi S.. Def. talk to a doctor but I would recommend vitamin A & D ointment. We used it for my little girl when she had diaper rashes or any other rashes (she had a similar mysterious bottom rash around the same age)and usually cleared it up within 2 days. We also use it for the inside of her nose b/c she is prone to nosebleeds. It's sort of a cure-all and also works on wounds while they heal (sometimes the skin around a scab becomes itchy; the ointment moisturizes the surrounding skin and helps the wound heel).

I don't know but it sound to me like a wetness rash. Does the pull up get wet at night. It so thats more than likely the cooperate. I would change brands of night pants you might even end up with a diaper instead because they are made to keep wetness away from the body where as the pull-ups are made to feel it so they learn to feel the wetness so they will learn to potty train.
The reason i say this is because when you pee the bed your bottom sets in it the longest which would cause this. The reason he didn't get them when he was wearing diapers is because they are made to keep the wetness away from the body, but now he is sleeping in it for a long period of time.
Good luck

I have heard of some children having psoriasis on their little bottoms. This would be a little better with the added moisture from the diaper rash cream and worse when it is kept dry. If it is itching him, that would be my first guess because psoriasis is very itchy (at least what I had on my elbows was).

You should probably still make a doctors appointment (as my son had a persistent rash that was actually caused by a virus), but I have always had success with a big tub of Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream. And those bath packets of the oatmeal stuff (sorry, can't remember the name) are pretty great. I have two redheads, and they just seemed to be prone to skin irritation and rashes when they were younger, but we rarely experience it anymore. Good luck! B. B.

a liquid antacid does wonders for bum rashes... My boy do not get rashes frequently, but have had a couple that we just couldn't control it seemed with the regular stuff, my sister a nurse told me to try mylanta and I was desperate so I did and it cleared up really quick. I also powder (the cornstarch kind) when I catch it early on, it seems to do the trick. I have used the generic brand of mylanta and it works the same. Mylanta isn't something we kept in the house until the rash incidents.

It sounds like it could be the soap you are using in the tub. Have you recently switched? Maybe he has had a reaction to one of the ingredients in what you are using. I know babies skin can get very sensitive to products that adults use. Just a thought...

He is probably allergic to something. Possibly a food, drink or something in his bath (bubbles, toys, something in the water? I wouldn't moisturize it eihter and let the area get plenty of air-let him be naked for a few minutes each day and see if that helps

Could it be a yeast infection? I had a friend who's baby had a peristant diaper rash that turned out to be a yeast infection and I am wondering if that is what is happening to your son. She had to wash all of his diapers and clothes in a sanitizing cycle - one of her friends had that particular cycle on her washing machine. Her other option was to strip the clothes, using some kind of vinegar solution. The problem results from detergent building up in the clothes. I don't know if this is particular to cloth diaper wearers or if it could happen to any child, but it is worth checking out if the rash does not go away. I think that it is a good idea to go to the doctor to have it looked out just to rule things out. Good luck!

Hi. I'm married with three kids. Sounds like he make have eczema or rosacea. He may need a steriodal cream or you may need to use soaps or cleansers that don't have a lot of things that can cause this - Dove is great for this but look into other one's for sensitive skin. Also, talk to your doctor about this. If you can get it Boudreaux's Butt Paste works really well as it contains Peruvian balsam which is wonderful!
