Help with Molars!

Hi Moms,

My 17 month old is getting in 3 molars - all have broken through at the same time!! On Tuesday I noticed he was cranky and yesterday and today he is just a mess. He is obviously in pain and I have been using teething gel, tylenol and a homeopathic remedy but can't seem to get it under control.

What really worries me is that he is not eating and drinking very little. He will only drink a little milk from a bottle and nothing at all from his cup. The last time he ate anything was at breakfast yesterday. He is lethargic and sad and I just don't know what to do. Is this all normal? He really has not had any problems with teething up to this point so I don't know how to gauge things. I realize that getting all those teeth at the same time can be very overwhelming for his little body but I just want to make sure he doesn't need a trip to the doctor.

Any advice or support would be very appreciated!
Thanks Mommies!
T.

So What Happened?

So I ended up taking him to the doc last night just to be sure. They said he was okay, but he woke up today with a 102.5 fever. I am just going to keep with the tylenol, push fluids, see how it goes for the next couple of days and not worry unless the fever gets worse. Our peds office has walk-in hours on both Saturday and Sunday so I can always run over there if need be.
Thanks for all your help!!

Does he have any other symptoms? Any fever, runny nose, runs??? If he has any other symptoms, I would take him in just in case.

A friend of mine has a 14 month old little girl. Her daughter wasn't eating and drinking very much and was very lethargic. She took her daughter in and they discovered she had RSV. No other symptoms that are associated with it, just not eating or drinking and being tired.

I would take him to the ped because he needs to be well hydrated and if you can't get him to drink much he can become dehydrated quickly. My oldest daughter was a bit sick for awhile when she was five and she started hallucinating. I took her in and she was dehydrated. They had to put in an IV...

Let me tell you she doesn't let herself get dehydrated anymore. She is very good about drinking plenty of fluids now even when she's playing.

Sounds totally normal to me! My daughter is 2, and just went through this again, with 2 molars trying to pop through. She barely ate all week, wouldn't brush her teeth, and had terrible diarrhea. She was generally irritable, and I just let her watch movies with me and we cuddled a lot. I would also suggest some Motrin; I gave her some in the morning and again before bed, just to take the edge off a bit. She also liked to chew on cold things. I think you can get pedialyte pops as well, so it seems like a treat but helps keep them hydrated.
Hope that helps! Molars are hard.

Dear T.,

I feel for you. I think a trip to the doctors is always a good plan. Could be teething and someting else? earache, sore throat etc... poor baby

Just make sure he is hydrated. He probably just doesn't feel like eating. Our doctor recommended G2 or Pedialyte. Just make sure he has tears and wet diapers otherwise I wouldn't worry.

I froze washcloths and let my kids chew on them. Not when you first take them out of the freezer and they are hard as a rock, but after a few minutes.

You're doing everything you can. The frozen stuff really helps alleviate the pain.

One of my kids got the chicken pox and 3 molars in the same week. I thought I was going to die! It will get better. Hang in there!

I have to agree it sounds pretty normal to me however if has a fever that persist for 3 days call the doc. On homeopathic remedies there are about five for teething keep trying they have worked for my kids in the past. And for hydration freeze his favorite juice in and ice cube tray for a special treat. Good luck and sooner or later all the teeth come in. (also congrts on number two)

Hi T.,

We kind of went through the same thing when our daughter was 14 months. She was getting in a tooth almost every three days! I use two homeopathic remedies the first was the Hyland's Teething Gel which worked pretty well. And I also used a homeopathic liquid I found on drugstore.com which is Children's Teething Relief Liquid by NatraBio and that helped as well. Then our pediatrician recommended Boiron Camilia Teething liquid. And that worked wonders by itself and when I used the Hyland's Teething Gel our daughter got twice the relief! What I liked best about the Boiron Camilia is, the liquid is in pre-measured tubes which is a big help for the all night teething (so you don't have to fumble around with the gel and a dropper). You can get the Boiron at Whole Foods and you can find it on the web at Organic Pharmacy - super cheap.

And our daughter would do the same as your son not really eat or want to drink but, with the Camilia she did relax and take down some food. I did find that she liked sucking on frozen raspberries the best.

Hope this helps! Good luck.
