Hi. I had an IUD placed 2 months ago and I am still bleeding. Usually it is a brown, particulate discharge that I have to wear a pad everyday for. I still am getting my period about every 4 weeks which are extremely heavy. Has anybody else had or is having this problem and how long can I expect the dishcharge to last?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who responded. I am toughing it out and most recently, the spotting has decreased thank god. It is getting better though my periods are still heavy but much shorter than when on the pill. So, I am waiting the full 6 months to a year to see what happens. Thanks again for all your great and supportive responses.

I have had my IUD for 5 months now and still have that problem. I went to my OB and he said it was normal until 6 months. I could still have a period up to a year

Hi I am new here but I am not really new to the IUD I have had mine in for 9 months and I had the same problem in the begining and I was really scared. then after about 2 months my spotting and bleeding stopped then about 3 weeks ago I started bleeding again and I have not stopped yet... I personally am sick of it and have yet to find a form of birth control that works for me. My husband has told me many times to go to have it checked again but now I am scared to have it taken out. I have exhausted almost all of the forms of birth control and I don't think I could handle having another baby right now!!

I am afraid you will not like my reponse. I recently had my IUD removed because my periods were out of control. I was bleeding more days out of the month than not. As much as I liked the idea of having a non-hormonal b.c. method, after 1.5 years of hell, I gave up. I despise the pill and am now struggling with what method to use.

You should definitely have it checked out by your Gyn -- maybe it's placed incorrectly or there is some other fixable reason you are having trouble. Unfortunately, this was just not the case for me.

Good luck,

S.

I had the mirena iud inserted 3 years ago. I bled for 3 months almost everyday ranging from heavy to spotting, but everyday there was some kind of discharge. Then all of a sudden at literally 3 months and 4 days into it, the bleeding stopped and since then I have not had a period. I love it! Hang in there. It doesn't work for everyone, but give it at least 3 1/2 months before you give up. Good luck!

hi M.,

My name is H. and I had the paraguard put in in February. I swear , I hated the stupid thing because I bled so bad every 2 weeks, spotted in between and I was up to my neck in pads, tampons, iron supplements, etc. Don't worry! It does calm down, I swear. Your body is doing a natural thing. It's reacting to a foreign object which means you're healthy. It is going to take some time for your body to adjust to this but it does after about 5 months ( well for me it did ). I kept telling myself that it was better than worrying about being pregnant. One more thing , and I hope this gave you a sense of mind; if you have rough sex or if your partner is 'large', you will notice spotting afterwards. That goes away too.
Don't be afraid to email me if you have anymore questions, about anything.
Good luck and don't give up.
H.

I thought I was the only one having a tuff time with my IUD. My gynocologist has suggested taking advil or alleve to reduce the bleeding during my period. When I remember to do it, it has helped.

Hi M.,

I had a Mirena IUD in for 2 and half years after I had my son and loved it. However for the first couple of months when I got my period it would last forever which was abnormal for me. I was use to a 2-3 day period. So my OB/Gyn put me on a hormone patch for like a week or two and after that my periods went back to normal and I loved it.. It was the most hassle free birth control I found.. I was awful at remembering to take the pill. Well hope your OB/Gyn was able to help you..

You could have bleeding or spotting for 2-3 months as well as cramping. It should subside after that. I spotted for about a month and 1/2. Now I don't even get a period except for some occasional brown spotting. Don't worry about it unless you are bleeding very heavy or if you are spiking a fever.

This does not sound normal. Please make an appt with your doctor to make sure it is inserted properly!! An IUD should not completey STOP your period either.
Good Luck.

Hi M.-
Do you have the Mirena or the Paragard? I had the Paragard IUD place about a month ago. I love it. I had some minor bleeding for a couple days and then it switched to a pinkish discharge for a about a week. Occasionally, I will have a brownish discharge for which I just wear a pantyliner everyday. I have not had my first period since the insertion, so I don't have too much to say on that. I know that periods with the Paragard can be heavier and a bit more uncomfortable as far as cramping goes and the Mirena can dwindle it down to very light or non-existent. You should probably speak with your GYN to give yourself peace of mind. Good luck.

Hi! I had a Paraguard IUD put in 4 months ago. I also had heavy spotting that was brownish. My periods were so heavy that I had to change pads every 1 1/2 to 2 hours. I also had cramping. I went to see my OBGYN and he found that my body had rejected the IUD. It wasn't fully in place. He said that was why I was having all the bleeding and cramping. I ended up going back on the pill, I'm much happier now. Do yourself a favor and call your doctor. I'm glad I did!

I weould check in with your OB/GYN or midwife. I only had bleeding for a few days- Infections can be hard to detect and a call in would prob be a good idea. I hope that things work out.

Hi M.,
I had my IUD inserted 3 years ago. I don't remember dicharging for longer than a couple of days.
Yes, my periods got heavier in the beginning but now they are a little to the heavy side but it's ok.
Have you talked to your OBGyn? Maybe you should call and ask, just to be reassured that it is a normal occurence.
Take care,

Hi M.,
I had the Mirena IUD inserted in July. I bled for 6 weeks straight, mostly spotting the first 4 weeks and then my period for the final 2 weeks. Then I got my period 4 weeks later. My period was MUCH lighter than normal, which was good since I had the IUD inserted to stop the excessive bleeding during my periods. I had NO cramping at all nor did I have the usual 3 weeks worth of premenstrual bloating and sore breasts etc. My doctor says that eventually, I will have little to no periods. I am extremely happy with the Mirena IUD so far and I'd say hang in there and give it a shot.

I have the paraguard (can't have hormones/blood clots from birth control) and the first month i had 2 periods and very heavy periods. Then the next month i just had one but it was still heavy. Now i year and 1/2 later i have a lighter period, maybe one day heavy and it lasts about 5 days.

I would call your dtr so they can just check the IUD, make sure everything is ok. Make sure your symptoms are just getting adjusted to it.

hugs

I had the exact same problem with my IUD. I had it put in 6 weeks after my son was born and my period did not stop for over 6 months. It was horrible. On top of that the inflamation and pain made my cramps more severe and even sex was uncomfortable. I had a non-hormonal IUD. I went to doctor after doctor. They did ultrasounds and exams to see if it was in the right place. In the end it just wasn't for me. There was never anything wrong with the placement, but for some reason my body just didn't like it. When my son was 2 and a half I had a tubal ligation and got rid of the IUD. Since then my periods are regular and the cramping is VERY minimal. I think for some women, they just don't work.

I had an IUD placed about a year ago and I didn't have these symptoms. I have a minor period every month or so but it is more like the discharge you described and not like my old periods at all. Have you discussed this with your doctor?
