Help with "Homemade" Gift to Daddy from 14 Month Old

My husband's birthday is coming up, and I am wracking my brain for ideas of what my 14 month old can "make him" for his birthday. Last year, we went to the do-it-yourself pottery painting place, and the plate is really cute, but how many plates does a guy need? Does anyone have any cute art ideas? It doesn't have to be fancy, just a project suitable for a toddler. My husband proudly displays everything sentimental either of us gives him. Thanks a lot!

So What Happened?

What a lot of wonderful and helpful responses! We will have gifts "for Daddy" for years to come. This year I think I will pick a T-shirt with his handprints on it and a cute saying, and go for more complicated themes as he gets older. Again, thanks-- you women rock!

When I was a Nanny I had the then 18 month old make a special card with all types of shapes, mostly hearts out of construction paper. Then I had him "Sign" it and I put happy birthday on it. It was really good. The mom kept it up all year. You cut out the shapes but let him decorate the card.

What about making him a t-shirt? Purchase a plain t-shirt and fabric paints, on the shirt write Hands Down the Best Daddy! and then let your son cover his hands in paint and put handprints below the message.
Or you can purchase a digital frame and let your son pick out his favorite pictures of him and his father, or whatever and present the frame to dad on his b-day.
These are just a couple of the ideas coming to mind. Good luck and have fun!

When our oldest was in pre-school, they did a craft for Father's Day where the had them dram a picture of what their favorite thing about Dad was. The teacher then translated at the top. Our son drew his version of cars (?) and then the teacher wrote "My dad is the best because he plays cars with me". It was so darling that we mounted it in a piece of picture matting and let him glue buttons around the edge to make a 'frame' 10 years later my hubby still has it on the shelf in his office. :o)

M., A "homemade" gift my husband loved and still looks forward to getting it every year is a journal. I went and bought a journal and called it the "Daddys Birthday Journal". Every year for his birthday, since my kids were 3 and 7 months, they either did a hand print and a drawing on a page and now they are writting to him each year about what makes Daddy so great. The only thing I do is write the year and his age on a page and save on page for a photo of the three of them from his birthday and the kids each get a page to draw or write. He loves it and looks forward to it every year. The only advice I offer if you do this, you keep the journal so you can find it for the next year celebration!

I hope this helps and good luck!

When my daughter was about that age, we made presents for my mom and dad. I let her finger paint on some construction paper and then I put a painted hand/foot print on it. After the paint dried, I took a favorite picture and glued it in the middle and then put it in a frame.
Of course the paint was a little messy but she had a BLAST and my parents loved it.
Another thing that I have done with my daughter (when she was a little older) is make a coupon book. I wrote things like "good for one story with...." or "good for going on a walk with... Basically, with that, you can write anything that your husband and son like to do together.

How about a wild picture with colorful little handprints all over it? Or get a plain rug, and use paint to put little footprints all over it, using your son's feet, naturally. It can be washed without removing the paint.

Another T-shirt idea is to use fabric paint to write "I walk all over my daddy" and then have your son put different colored foot prints all over it.

My favorite homemade gifts from my kids have been ones with their handprints on them. Perhaps place one in a frame or small shadow box and let your son decorate around the hand print.

How about something with your child's picture on it - we did a fun craft where we made a frame using cuts outs of tracings of my son's hands. I cut a circle out of the middle of a paper plate for the picture frame and I helped him glue the little hands around it. You could write or print out a message on one of the hands and let him decorate them with glitter or stickers or pompoms, etc.

The same could be done on a mat board frame - maybe even decoupage it (what toddler doesnt love slathering on glue?) - the shape of hands would show up great if they were in different styles or colors of paper.

Another cute decoupage craft we did a while back was make a box with the kids pictures on it in a collage. I bought a sturdy paper box with a lid from hobby lobby ($12). I printed out a bunch of the kids pictures on a laser printer (ink jets dont work because the ink runs when it gets wets) and then I cut them out. The kids helped me to glue them on and then to do the decoupage.

Hope that helps you!

Blessings!

You could decorate a little box or dish to hold coins, golf tees, cuff links, keys, etc--all those little things that get scattered everywhere. You could paint it or use bits of torn tissue and decoupage it.
Going along with the pcture frame ideas, you could use photos of your child with or without his dad and print them small or cut them to make the border on a mat, and then put a little thought about dads or birthdays in the fram. I have a great poem about sons watching dads I'll send you if you'd like--you can message me. It's about how "There are little eyes upon you, watching every day. . . . you're the kind of man he will be someday." Very cute--I used it for Father's Day.
Best wishes!

Okay, I have a couple of ideas. First I saw an idea which my daughter and I are going to do for my husband. You get his favorite chocolate bar and take the wrapper off "nicly". Make a template of the wraper on his favorite color or let your son pick a color out. Then you decorate it. Your son can do this part. Let him pick out stickers, paint, color, whatever..... Let him decorate it and put it back around the candy bar. Give to him in his lunch for the day. Don't tell him about it, just pack it and he will be surprised.

Another idea is go to Starbucks and get one of the traveler cups which you can insert and decorate. Follow the directions. Really simple, it is another template type thing and EASY... If he is a coffee drinker he will be reminded everyday of his son waiting at home for him! I have one, and I get comments on it wall the time.

Hope this helps a little bit! Good luck and let us know how it goes!

We have done 2 very popular projects.
One-we got a plain black mat and oil based paint. I painted our kids feet on the bottom and then set them on the mat pushing down gently on each toe to make sure it left a good print. Daddy loves being welcomed by his little feet and it reminds him how much they've grown as it took several years of use before the feet wore off and the kids loved standing in their spot to see how big they were getting.
Two-I got a T-shirt and fabric paint. Then I had my biggest son put on the shirt, you could have any other bigger person put it on, then I painted my kids hands and had them give the shirted person a hug. I again gently pressed their hands into the shirt to be sure there was a good print. I wrote our kids names on the front plus "love Daddy", so (not my kids names) "Kimmy, Avalon, and Bruce love daddy". It was amazing how many fun comments my hubby got when he'd wear his hug shirt.

M.,
Does your husband like to BBQ? Perhaps you can get an apron and have your son put his handprint on that. It's always fun to see how much bigger the handprints are getting.

With my niece and nephew, we got a picture frame with a white mat. Spread a garbage bag on the dining room floor and then let the kids fingerpaint on the mat. Before or after we took a picture of them and had it blown up to fit the frame. My brother loved it. The other idea we had on the same lines was that rather than fingerpainting the whole mat, to just have the kids dip their hands in the paint and hand print the mat.

Uppercase Living has a really neat item for sale now that is perfect for little ones. You do their hand/feet prints. Really neat. If you go to www.teamgorman.com/buy and scroll to the bottom you can see a picture of it. It has a message that says 'This is my hand on this very day, remember me now as I grow and play'. You can get it in 3 colors, a blue, green or pink. Very neat. I just did one with my 24 month old and bought one for both of my grandbabies.. (yes I have a 24 month old and 2 grandbabies-13 months and 6 months.. my oldest is 22)

This is similar to some of your other suggestions, but I would do a plaster cast hand and/or foot print - you can paint the final product afterwards...I've seen kits for these at art/craft stores - I remember my mom and I doing them when I was little and it was a lot of fun!

I had my son color his daddy a book. He would color pictures on plain paper and then tell me what the pictures were. I wrote what he said on each page and then bound it with string. My husband loved it.

What about making a frame? Michaels has great wood frames, paint and fun shapes to put on them. You could take a cute picture of the two of them to put in it. Maybe not completely fancy, but definitely a fun project that daddy would adore. :)

M. I would go to a dollar store and find a picture frame that he can "decorate" Then put a picture of your son in it for him.
