Help with Fine but Often Tangled Hair!

Any adult conditioner should work better. As an ADULT with fine tangly hair, I can say the 2-in-1s don't cut it for me, and I can't imagine the kids stuff is any better. I distinctly remember whining as a kid because the "no more tangles" didn't magically make the tangles go away...you still have to comb them out! :)
It really helps make it easier to comb the tangles out while the conditioner is in the wet hair, working from the bottom up, and holding the upper hair so you're not pulling against the head.

Loreal Kids makes awesome conditioner! My daughters hair also gets tangled really easy, but this stuff does wonders for her!

I haven't tried this but keep meaning to, my daughter has the same thing going on. Food grade gycerine mixed with water in a spray bottle. I can't remember who told me but I think you just add a few drops of glycerine.

I'm going to experiment!

We use california baby conditioner, it can be left in. Expensive but you only have to use a tiny bit. We got it at target but it's sold online and several other places too. Good luck!

You're hearing from a mom who witnessed a parent's worst nightmare the other night - my child came out of the bathroom with one of those narrow, round hair brushes, wound tightly - ALL THE WAY UP her hair to her scalp! I nearly died. It took 45 minutes to untangle that thing (and more than once did I think I would have to cut it out, poor baby!!). Sometimes life is about trial-and-error!!!!!

I think it's probably time to get a trim. My daughter's hair is thick and was getting hard to comb through the bottom, and we got it cut, problem solved!! Hope this helps:)

I have hair like that and always have, but the stuff that has worked the best for me that didn't leave my hair greasy or heavy is Dove anti-frizz. It's in a little blue pump and a little bit goes a long way. I use it as a leave-in conditioner and it helps with frizz ans static and tangles and leaves my hair light and shiny. I don't know about using adult products in baby hair, but if it's okay, you can always try it.

Johnson used to make a separate conditioner back in the day. I would imagine that they still do. You might try that. Also, I believe suave makes a kids conditioner that is not a leave in. Also, I'm not sure about kids cuts places near bellevue, but there's a place in the supermall in Auburn that does kids hair cuts and sells salon products that are geared towards kids. They have all kinds of scents...banana, rootbeer, much more. Anyway, I believe they have conditioners for kids. If you are having that much of a tangling problem, you might check them out or a kids salon that is closer to bellevue should also have salon products geared towards kids also.

I use Suave detangling spray on my daughter's fine hair...

I handcraft bath & body but I am geared more toward adults. I do know of a shop that handcrafts baby shampoo that is 100% organic.

She may need a shampoo completely made of natural plants fruits and oils & free of any type of chemical. Store bought shampoos can be so harsh for anyone. There are alot of unatural chemicals found in hardware stores & such. One other thing to add that my hair dresser suggested for my daughter, was washing her hair less often. We were washing it almost every day, and now we just wash it about every other day, or when it really needs it.
Does your daughter cry when you comb her hair? Our daughter does and I feel so bad for her!

E., I know you said you didn't really want to use spray in conditioners BUT have you tried the detanglers? Our daughter (10 years old now) had the same type of hair for years!! Probably from about 2 until she was maybe in 2nd grade. We used store bought detangler and then I learned a recipe for making your own at home. It works WONDERFUL!!! I couldn't recall the exact recipe we used but I found a couple online for you to try if you want to. I highly recommend trying them !! It saves TONS of tangles and tears.

I have waist length hair, so a leave-in conditioner / detangler is a necessity for me. When I got down to the last couple squirts in the bottle, I added it to my shopping list and was shocked when I looked at the shelf at the store and realized I’d been paying almost $3 for that little bottle. I consulted the internet for help and found you can make your own.

So I mixed up 1/8 cup of my regular hair conditioner with 1 cup very hot water. Then I just poured it into the old detangler bottle. That way I was able to re-use the bottle and my homemade stuff is properly labeled. I’ve been using it for a couple weeks now and it’s working just fine! Obviously the price difference depends on what kind of conditioner you use, but it’s substantial.

I just put 1 part conditioner and 3 parts water in a spray bottle and shake well. I spray it all over my hair when I get out of the pool, and my hair is a mess. It works really well, and it is cheap too.

If you don't have a store bought detangler bottle you can use a clean small spray bottle like what you would use for plants. You can get them at most stores in the trial size area of the store. They also now have smaller spray bottle (I think 8 ounces) that you can buy from those areas. I hope this helps.

Try trimming the very ends then putting it in a braid so it does not get tangled

Well, I grew up in a "stylist" family. My mom was and so were her friends. My mom past away a couple of years ago, but I still keep in touch with her friends. ANYWAYS...One of her friends noticed that I was using baby shampoo on my daughter when she had quite a bit of hair. She completely scolded me for it. Apparently, you are NOT to use baby shampoo on kids that actually have hair! Who knew! I started using regular adult shampoo and conditioner on all my kids from that time on. I also brush in the conditioner. My kids' hair is so shiny and soft. I just love it! So, my advice: skip the baby and kid shampoo and go for the adult. It's the only way to go! :)

I can't recommend a better product than Johnson & Johnson but I had long hair for most of my life and I found that tangles occurred much less, especially on the ends, when the hair was kept trimmed and free of split ends. Usually just snipping off a half inch or more did the trick.

When my hair is getting tangled that much it is usually a sign that i need a good trim. Just a thought...

Hi E. - I have a 20 month old with the same problem - we use the suave 2 in 1 shampoo & it works....plus it is really inexpensive.....I was hesitant to purchase it until I found out all my niece's & nephews use it (10 of them) - it's no tears too.

My daughter has the same problem, and the back of her head is constantly frizzy and knotty from her car seat. We've tried lots of different products, and the best seem to be regular Breck conditioner, and also Paul Mitchell regular conditioner. I just use a dollop every third day or so in the shower, and it really helps to get the tangles out.

You may have to use a seperate shampoo and conditioner. Sometimes the two in ones don't have an extra ingredient. Plus a conditioner usually sets to get a softer and less tangled hair.

What about the Johnson's detangler? It's not a spray in conditioner, just a detangler.

My daughter's hair was the same way. I had not trimmed her hair and her ends seem to do what you are describing, so I gave her a trim of her ends first. I also use the J & J shampoos, but we do not wash as often as we use to and that seems to help. I also use Aussie's 3 minute miracle on her once a month and I have used a leave in conditioner as well a few times here and there.

Lately, I have found that braids work wonders! She is in school and the frazzled ends and tangles make it hard to get going in the morning. We purchased the brush from WalMart that has no rubber backing so the hair glides across the plastic and not getting tangles or attracted to the rubber (I can not remember the brush name, but it is by Goody). I braid her hair a few times a week either wet or dry, and leave them in even over night and it makes the next mornings brushing so easy! Other days, with less washing, starting at the bottom, or top using my fingers as a lead for the brush has made our hair brushing alot less painful and much easier than before!

My daughter also has really fine hair, I have bought the same shampoo and the no more tears spray, neither one worked.
I found that just good conditioner works the best.
Also, a satin pillow case will keep her hair from tangleling in her sleep.

E., we have four girls in our house and all but one has very fine hair that too gets dry and tangled. I got this straight from the pros that baby shampoo because of the no tear ingrediants actually dry the hair out making this problem worse. You need to upgrade to a higher quality shampoo and cond not an all in one and your problem will go away. Look for one that adds moisture to the hair or a smoothing affect. There are so many brands just go with what you like for price, smell etc. Hope this helps.

Try Paul Mitchell Kids Shampoo AND Spray conditioner....they also make a glossing gel for adults...but it's not heavy and fills in some of the gaps. I notice when I use the Paul Mitchel...that my daughters fine hair is MUCH more easy to manage...it's more sleek and less tangly and everywhere. She has slight curl (but the same kind of hair...so her hair seriously goes every which direction thatI don't want it to)
Just find somewhere that Carrys a large selection of paul mitchell Kids...WORTH the price...and doesn't smell icky.

My daughter has fine, wavy hair that knots all the time.

Switch to adult products. The baby stuff won't do any more. Also use a separate condition from the shampoo when washing. I follow up the washing after towel drying with Infusium leave-in treatment. It's in a squirt bottle so you put it in your hand or squirt directly on the hair. I then comb it through for fewer knots.

I also find that if I brush her hair each morning AND night we are less likely to accumulate the knots that are such a battle to brush out.

My Daughter also has fine hair and the tangles are an issue. We use Burt's Bees products as she has sensitivity to many ingredients in other products. I use a Burt's "adult" formula conditioner on her hair and their kids shampoo/wash in the rest of her. I find that it helps a great deal and she is excited because it smells good too without being too chemical.

Sometimes a trim of the ends gets the thin ends off and it doesn't tangle quite so much. And/Or take your conditioner and just lightly massage through her hair focusing on the ends.

My daughter has really fine hair and when she sleeps at night, no matter if we put it up or not, it gets huge knots in it. There is a detangler spray you can put in their hair right before you comb it that helps a lot. The best one that I have found is Paul Mitchell. Kind of pricey but lasts a long time. Also, try using separate shampoo and conditer and leave the conditioner in. I know that sounds weird but it works really good on my older daughter. As they get older that Johnson's and Johnson's doesn't work so good because they have oils and such of a older child... even if their hair is fine. Good luck!! I know how the hair combing thing can be with tangles.

We have the same problem with our 20 month old. 2-in-1's simply don't work, neither do "no-tears". I've also found that regular cheap-ish conditioners don't work well either, and I'm nervous about getting it in her eyes anyway. I've started to use a salon grade leave-in conditioner. I just rub a pea-size in her hair while wet after the bath -- PROBLEM SOLVED! I use Aveda. It feels silly to buy expensive conditioner for a 1-year old, but it only takes a teensy bit, and it works wonders.

I also had this problem with my daughters hair. I started using adult conditioner (Pantene) pon her hair and the tangles were gone.

We had same problem -- try Paul Mitchell Detangler -- it has helped greatly. Also, if she swims, clorine makes the tangles worse -- you might try shampoo designed to get chlorine out. Hope that helps! M.

Our little girl has the same issue (just like her momma did at that age -- I can well remember shrieking as my mother combed my long hair as a small girl!). She is about your little one's age, too, but her hair is wavy.

We use J&J No More Tears Shampoo and follow up with the J&J No More Tangles spray, which also works beautifully if your little girl has tangles with dry hair. Before we got the spray, it was a nightmare trying to get the tangles out. We have a TON of the shampoo (it was a popular baby gift, and we still have a bunch more to use ... but I like the other folks' ideas of using adult conditioner, too. And when our spray runs out, I'm going to try the idea of making our own!
