Hi !

Since a previous post had such a great response, I thought maybe I might have the same luck. I hope :). I need some help with choosing colors. The ceilings, trim and windows are white.

Family Room
- We already have 3 walls painted a light tan. And an accent wall a medium brown (24 feet long). Our family room over looks our kitchen that is painted a light-medium brown. And our kitchen looks to our hallway which is a light cream color. We just got new furniture and I feel like everything is too brown (brown couch, brown entertainment center, beige carpeting, brown tables). Any thoughts on what to repaint the accent wall? Or just leave it and accent with pillows/artwork instead? We are afraid if we do a maroon/brick red wall that'll it be too much. Our accent wall now in the family room now is also the same color as an accent wall in kitchen.

Master Bedroom
- Our comforter set is taupe and black. It is a larger room.

Master Bath
- Something that will blend with bedroom.

Spare bathroom
- Right now I have white/indigo blue shower curtain accents. I am not set on keeping these but I also don't want to do something too trendy.

Office
- It is the smallest bedroom (10x10).

Spare room
- Eventually one of our children will be moved into this room. We aren't sure if it will be our daughter or son. Ideally, I wouldn't want to have to re-paint the room (and instead just redecorate with bedding/paint accents/etc).

Thoughts? Anyone? :)

What can I do next?

Although we have some tan and beige rooms, we do have some nice coloring in our other rooms that go well with the tans. All of our colors are Sherwin-Williams. Our living room is Red Bay that flows into our dining room that is Desert Sand (tan). That room leads to the kitchen, which is Clary Sage. We also used the Desert Sand in our downstairs family room and our bedroom, which is right off that room is Foggy Day which is a slate blue color.
Good luck!!

We have a brown couch and entertainment center. I did our living room walls yellow and its really nice. Need to pick a warm light yellow though, not citrus-y.

Hi Nicole,

Here are some ideas (just my taste, so you may not like them!).

For the family room, I was going to suggest either a burgundy, cinnamon, or deep gold color as one option (although it sounds like you don't want to go in the burgundy direction) if you want to keep it somewhat tonal, but not all brown. Another idea, would be to use a green - perhaps a moss shade - not too dark, but not too light...would work well with the green, but add some contrast.

For the master bedroom, I have found that I personally like things to be less contrasting - more tone on tone, which seems somehow more relaxing. Perhaps a lighter or darker shade of taupe for the walls, and perhaps something in the same family, either darker or lighter for the master bath. I have seen a really striking bathroom in mostly white, with gray and silver in a recent Pottery Barn catalog, that made me think that might look nice too.

For the spare room, I'd probably go with either a buttery yellow or a warm beige (or mintish green if you really want color). You could then use with either a boy or girl and dress up with accent colors, etc.

good luck and have fun!

We had the same colors and we had a red accent wall, not lipstick red, but a deep red, it looked really nice, and our comforter matched it exactly! Well, we moved and have remodeled and we want the living room a beige color and our bedroom is a beige color, so I didn't want to paint the downstairs/family room the same, so we opted for a sage color, well, more like an olive, it's really nice, there's two different color greens, we have a bi-level so there's a knee wall, so the top half is lighter than the bottom. If you'd like, I'll send you a picture, just need your email, mine is ____@____.com

Hi Nicole,
Have you considered hiring an interior designer? Some people think a designer is for the rich and famous or that its easy and everyone can do it. However, an interior designer can save you money, time and decrease frustration/stress. Look for a professional interior designer with a degree in design, and belongs to a professional organization like ASID or IIDA( google. Both have local chapters with a list of designers in your area. Being a designer myself, I have helped clients with one hour consultations by suggesting "finishing" touches, accessories, space planning or did color anylasis. Good luck.
