I need help with my electric bill. Because of the people that lived here before me, my electric deposit is 900 dollars. Which makes my bill 3oo dollars a month before they add my utilities to it. I have 4 children and a disconect notice

What can I do next?

some churches may help you, but the deposit should be based on your credit not the people before you. I would talk to the electric company again and ask to pay a $100/mo toward your deposit. If you have good credit, they shouldn't ask for that much of a deposit.

I delt with the same thing with my electric company when I first moved in. If the bill wasn't in your name and you have decent credit no worries ;-) Go the the electric company and when they tell you about the deposit make the point that it was not your bill and they should do a credit check. That's what worked for me.
If that's not an option got to your local dept. of human services. Here in Rutherford co. they have the Cumberland action commitee? they will give you the help you need. Especially with your husband being on disablility it should be a breeze to get approved...I know they offer emergency help you just have to "have' less than $200 available to you.
Best of luck!

The people that lived there before should have nothing to do with what you pay for deposit. Unless it was in your name and they did not pay their bill. Maybe you can put the electric in someone else's name??? Kind of like a co signer. For help with the bill you can call your church or churches in the area. Also, you can ask the electric company who they refer for people who need help with their utilities. Also, you may be able to break up that $900 into more than 3 months, maybe over the course of the year.

Are you a member of a church? I would go to them and ask for help or any other church in your area. Most churches have a fund to help people in your situation. I would first call the electric company. Like the other 2 ladies said, your deposit should only be beacuse of you,not someone else previously living there. I would call them and see what they can do. Good luck.
