Hi all,
So I have struggled with smoking off and on since I was 18 (I am now almost 33). I want to stop again. In the past I was able to stop 2 times but how I stoped wont work this time. I stoped because I got pregnat.
The first time was easy...just the smell of it made me ill. I was able to not smkoe for a few years after my son was born but started again. The second time (when I had my daughter) was a little more hard but still not too bad. and again I was able to not start again for a few years.
I started again about a year and a half ago. Each time I start its because of stress. I get stressed out and reach a breaking point and reach for them. But now I jsut want to quit for good. It's ecpensive and nast and is probley wreaking havock on my insides. While I dont smoke in hte house or around my kids, I knwo that it cling to my clothing and I dont like them breathing it off me.
So far I have tryed the gum (doesnt help) and the patches (Dosent work, makes me jittery, and gives me bad dreams). I was wondering what all other people have tryed that help them kick the habbit. Any advice would be helpful
I am looking for help here....I dont need to be tolled how bad this is for me or my family...I already know and truly want to stop!
Thanks for the help :)

What can I do next?

A friend of mine and her husband are finding much success using the FOOS e-cigarette. Most smoke shops sell them. It gives you the oral fixation, nicotine, and a HUGE selection of flavors, without the icky chemicals and smoke. It's worth looking in to.

I have never smoked, but have quit other addictions (soda, food, etc) and it's HARD. Quitting something has to be something you want to do.

For soda, I quit cold turkey. I craved it, felt sick, was moody, for a few weeks. Eventually I just didn't want it. Now if I take a sip I feel sick and it tastest so gross.

Food is a different story. We need food to survive. I can't quit it cold turkey. I make the things that are healthier my best and only options. However, if there is a cake or something around, I'll take enough for one or two bites and move on. Just to satisfy the craving and get a taste. That won't work with smoking though.

A friend of mine (from here) just quit smoking in the last couple of months. She used Chantirx I believe.

I second the e-cig. You can gradually reduce the level of nicotine over time. Look into it.

While I am not a smoker, I did for a bit in college b/c the girls I lived with did. I don't think I ever got addicted but I know they were and its tough. Since I am not a smoker, I have no idea if this will work but I've heard of some people getting hypnotized and even acupuncture. My friend quit using Chantix. You may speak with your doc.

I quit cold turkey. Whenever I craved a cigarette I brushed my teeth, drank ice water through a straw, ate carrot sticks or cleaned something. I stayed away from smokers. After three weeks all the cravings were gone.

why dont you try the e-cigarette? my friend has smoked since she was 18 and she is now 42 and quit about a year ago being on the e-cig. it has a very small amount of nicotine in it but most of it is vapors. there are different flavors too. the cost is about the same as if you were to have a smoking habit. her craving for cigs became less and less until she just eventually stopped. took about a year but she said that it did work. she was like you, had tried everything! the patch, gum... nothing worked. she said it was a slow habit to break but its better than smoking the real thing. you should try it! good luck!

I do it cold turkey, but I have gone back a few times (stress).
You can try hypnosis. Accupunture, e- cig, there are lots of things out ther. I like the cold turkey because then you are not replacing a bad thing for another bad thing. The times it has wored the best for us, is when we change the sitiaon for the the first few days. Like , going on vacation or taking a few days off of work etc.

Have a goal, put that money that you would spened a day into an envelope and take your family on a small wekened trip in a few months.

Good luck.

Check out quitnet.com

I smoked for years, 2-3 packs a day. When ji decided to quit, I did a free online cognitive therapy class. There was one lesson for each day, for 30 days. I quit on day 22. I found readings up on quitting, and finding a support community, to be really helpful.

Cold turkey is the only way to finally quit, btw.

Everyone I know that was successful, including my husband, did it cold turkey. His motivation was the birth of our son. You already know you can quit, you just need to find other ways of dealing with stress. Maybe go for a run, yoga, meditation, kickboxing, whatever. Good luck, you can do it :)

Hi S.,
Like you, I was able to quit a 12 year smoking habit when I got pregant with my first child which made it so easy. I think what you need to do first is really look inside and say, "Do I really want to quit?" If you don't, now is not the right time. If you asy Yes, then you need to have something in place to help you handle your stress. Stress will always pop up so you need to have something to reach for other than the cigs. Maybe make a list of reasons you want to quit besides the obvious health, smell, cost reasons we all have used as our reasons to quit. How about something like, "I don't want to cut my life short for my kids/spouse, etc." Other than the health reason, I didn't want my child to associate the smell of cigs with their Mom. Once you can find a healthy option for relieving stress than you should be able to break the habit. My Dad used Chantix to quit and it has been probably 4+ years. He admitted to having crazy dreams/nightmares but he got to a point where in his dreams, he would say, 'this is just a dream'....seems like some trippy movie scene the way he explains it. Is it worth dealing with a few weeks of bad dreams to get over this? I really have no idea but it couldn't hurt. Just depends on how far you are willing to go to be rid of this.
For me, I will probably crave a cig and a good drink for the rest of my life. But I quickly see my little one and feel her baby sibling moving around and there is nothing greater than knowing I am doing everything I can to be apositive, healthy example for my kids, regardless of my past 'sins'. Biggest hug for you while you travel this road....it isn't easy but I promise it is worth it!!!

I have not smoked. My dad quit cold turkey after a long time - unfortunately the damage to his lungs was done and he has emphesema so it's good that you are stopping! Not sure how mom quit.

I have heard that part of quitting is breaking the habits AROUND the cigarette - like if you have one WITH coffee, then have one before or after. If you have one before lunch, have it after. You have to stop using the habit "tracks" so you don't "need" the cigarette at those times.

I heard about social media tools to help quit - here's a link. You may find more interesting stuff through google. GOOD LUCK!

My best friend also tried everything. She finally did acupuncture with smokers gum.. I think it took her 2 acupuncture sessions. originally they thought 1 would do it.

She was very pleased the day she realized she had not been smoking and no longer craved them.

I had great success by going to acupuncture, Dr. Patti Wang on Hampden and Tamarac.
It was helpful for me to also realize that I was taking years away from my children's mother's life if I continued and that smoking usually kills women by heart attack before it even reaches COPD.
It is so worth it and I know you can do it.
Most of it isn't physical, it is mental.

I smoked from 14 to 30. Tried cold turkey like 10 times. Just gave me a headache and I would go back. I did Chantix. It made me have super real dreams that I would wake up thinking did that really happen? I smoked 1 week on it. Then quit. You can take up to 3 months of the pills. On the 3 rd week I was forgetting to take it so I just stopped. That was 4.5 years ago. Trust me when I tell you I have had some severe stress and have not gone back. You can do it!
