Yep - that's what my soon-to-be 3 yr old son asked for - he's pretty amazing ;-) I'm just glad it will be indoors! We're having the party this saturday at the Main Event in Grapevine and we've asked all the kids to come wearing blue (my idea!). I need some help coming up with:

1) Inexpensive party favors for girls and boys, ages 18 mos - 11 yrs.
2) Cake/cupcake ideas: I'm willing to get an affordable cake made somewhere but not sure how to combine BLUE and BOWLING and 3 YRS OLD w/o going crazy into food coloring as I'm not a big fan of it.

You moms are so clever and full of ideas and cost-saving tips. Please help ;-) Of course, this is all a little last minute!

Thank you so much and I hope I can return the favor and help you out some day :-)

So What Happened?

Your ideas are wonderful - and of course, yesterday I simply threw my hands up in the air and asked Austin what kind of cake he wanted and he said, "I want a SHARK cake and I want to eat the bad shark!" Viola! A blue cake with a shark and a big number 3! I managed to find a bakery down the street who will do a great shark cake (1/2 sheet for 38 bucks) and they happened to have bowling ball and pin candles (funny combo, I agree) ;-) Last minute last night I decided to get blue t-shirts and use iron-ons to honor the event. Michael's has t-shirts 2 for $5 right now and I'm using their 40% off coupon for the iron-on transfer sheets. Since I'm a graphic designer, making the "Big Blue Bowling Birthday" logo will be a snap and I can make each iron-on logo include the child's name to make them individual... So the shirts will be their favor at just over $3 ea. - I got that idea on the web ;-) I think they will like them... I hope so!

You all are so wonderful and thoughtful when I need the help, THANK YOU MAMAS!!!
Love, Mel

What about a blue bowling pin cake? Or just a white bowling pin accented with blue icing?

Hi, I'm V. of Fort Worth...I love decorating cakes and it sounds like this one will be a fun one to make! :0) I was thinking about it and there are a few different things you could do. The one with the least amount of food color would be to start with a sheet cake, and decorate it lengthwise. Add a Blue action figure on the right, facing the left. With a black can of frosting, pipe lines for bowling lanes going from Blue to the left side of the cake. Next you could add a set of bowling cake decorations. Here is the link to a website that sells bowling ball and pin cake decorations:

http://www.fancyflours.com/cgi-bin/fancyflours/5051-CT-BW...

You could possibly either use three pins, labeled 1, 2 and 3 and have numbers 1 and 2 knocked over and the number 3 still standing and in a brighter color; or you could have the ball look as if its rolling down the lanes toward the pins. Then I thought maybe a good thing to write on the cake would be something like, "Strike" Up Birthday Fun with Blue!
Then, you could pipe a blue-colored border around the edge of the cake.
I sure hope this helps...I'd love to find out how it turns out! :0)

My 28 month old LOVES bowling! We will have his next party at a bowling ally!

Ok, party favors! You can get the older kids a set of milk jugs and a little bowling ball for table top bowling at home! Also you can go to toys R us and get the set of kids bowling pins it’s a set of 10 pins and 2 balls for $10, you can get the kids to color them and put there names on one (try glowing in the dark so all kids get to go home with a pin! Sounds silly to us but the kids love them! They are big and colorful! I have playdates and all the kids run around then them.

When my son was two we went to Mardel the Christain book store, they have a ton of cheap things for teachers! Have bends that are 10 peaces for a dollar. Tattoos, bracelets, pencils, (I remember seeing blowing pins panicles. And blue ones too) there is a lot of fun things the kids got! Stickers are always good! You can find bowling stickers and pass the out too!

Cake! I got my little girls cake at Kathy icing on the cake in Arlington! She has two bowling cakes on her website but if you don’t like them you can pretty much draw out that you want her to make, she is really good! http://www.kathyicingonthecake.com/gallery/index.html
You can do a dark blue bowling ball, with a light blue back ground and a bark blue border. And the ally and pins up the middle!

Or you can jus make cupcakes to look like blue bowling balls and do 3 little back finger wholes on them!

Sorry that’s all I can think of! Hope you have a wonderful party!

We do a lot of bowling parties in my house (we bowl in leagues, so my kids think that's where they are supposed to be). I would recommend you hit hobby lobby, and pick up some little wooden (or plastic) balls and milk jugs (Can't give you a good size, cause I can't picture the right dimensions in my head:o) but small enough to get them on the cake and you need a least 6 milk jugs. Just make a plain 1/4 sheet cake iced (blue if you want).. Lay a bunch of graham crackers on top (like a bowling lane) on the middle of the cake. Then paint the milk jugs and ball blue. Set the milk jugs up like bowling pins on one end and the ball on the other end of the graham crackers (use some icing to stick them to the graham crackers). And there you have it. Too bad you did it at Main Event, the "real" bowling alleys will usually give you a bowling pin as a souvenir.
As far as party favors go, I usually hit the Dollar tree and see what I can find there. Or hit Party City, they have a pinata bag that has candy and silly toys, so just use what's in there. I always find the goodie bag rarely makes it past the drive home so it doesn't really matter what's in it.

Since you have such a wide age range - you may want to just do basic party favors. Maybe a little blue bag (you could glue on a bowling ball cutout if you have time to make them) with individually-wrapped graham crackers, bouncy ball, a couple crayons, a mini coloring book, and a fruit strip. Something like that - basic and easy - not too expensive and fits all ages.

On the cake, you could check with the grocery store bakeries if they can do a sheet cake with a bowling alley theme. Doesn't seem like it would be too hard, but what do I know!!

Have a great time - what a fun theme!!
