HELP! My Baby Has Diarreha

My son is almost ten months old and he got a fever starting Monday. About Tuesday night he started getting diarreha. By Wednesday his fever dropped and now he just has these horrible smelling bowel movements. He has had about six to eight in the last day, the last of which drenched him from head to toe. I had to change sheets, clothes and give him a bath. What really worries me is that it is wet diarreha, but it has white clumps in it. What is that? He acts fine and I'm trying to force liquids, but what could be wrong? We've been to the Humane Society recently, but my docs nurse said that isn't it. Any ideas? I'm really stressed out!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the encouragement and advice. After a week I decided to change his formula that he has been using since he was about six months old. It stopped instantly! It could be a coincidence I guess, but I'm just glad it stopped! Thanks again everyone!

Have you tried Pedilite yet? Or maybe some weak mint tea? It seemed to help my daughter when she was baby. She is 18 yrs of age now and I still give her weak mint tea and Pedalite.

MY WHOLE FAMILY HAD IT. I WOULD SIT THERE AND GIVE MY BABY ICE CHIPS. DO NOT GIVE HIM ANYTHING WITH SUGAR AT ALL. IT MAKES IT WORSE ( BANANAS,JUICE,DAIRY(MILK) ) GIVE HIM STARCH FOOD. WHITE RICE IS THE BEST IT SHOULD STOP IT IN A FEW DAYS. YOU CAN EVEN BOIL RICE (ALOT)AND GIVE HIM THE RICE WATER IN HIS BOTTLE. ITS AN OLD REMEDY :) PLUS OUR LOCAL PHARMISIST SUGGESTED IT AS WELL THEY ARE SOMETIMES THE BEST PEOPLE TO TALK TO. AND IT WORKED FOR MY SON.MAKE SURE HE HAS WET DIAPERS THREW THE DAY IF NOT HE COULD BE DEHYDRATED. ALSO THEY RECOMENDED GATORADE EVEN THOUGH IT HAS SUGAR IT HELPS WITH THE ELECTROLITES :) GOOD LUCK

I have a 5 month old girl and having the same problem for over a week however she never had a fever. She is doing everything normal I had started her on foods and now took her off except I put her back on Rice Cereal since it constipated hoping it would get rid of the diarreha. The doc said its going around but she is raw and sooo red I put this cream and also let her air out. She goes everytime she eats it was green now its just yellow its like she passes gas and there it comes. There was alot and now its not much and I am gonna take her to the doctors tommorrow. They told me as long as she has tears and still pees she isn't dehydrated. She acts fine but its not normal to have it this long I will let you know

Hi B.,
You should probably give him some pedialyte or Gerber liquilytes to keep him hydrated. Gatorade is not recommended for babies. And giving him rice or toast should be okay. No dairy at all! Hope he gets better soon!

I have never heard of white lumps in stool like that with fever. Try getting a second opinion.

Sounds like Rotavirus. My little girl just got it about a week ago. Fever, seedy diarrhea, distictive smell... sounds like it to me!!

There's nothing to worry about with rotavirus as long as you can keep him dehydrated. The only thing that will send him to the hospital is dehydration.

If you want to know for sure take a poopy diaper to your docs and have them test it. I'll bet you anything it comes back positive!

B.,

It sounds like your son is teething. This is very common sign. Make sure he gets plenty of sleep. No fruit juice. It will make the symptoms worse. Protein will help harden the stool. I would suggest a shake with a soy base. You can get it from me at my site www.herbalmom.com. Call me if you are not sure what to get.

This is going to be an off an on occurrence until his teeth come in. If his fever gets too high, stays high for more than a couple of days before breaking or he starts to vomit then see your doctor.

Don't worry and keep him hydrated and fever under control you should pull though this.

Email me if you have any other questions.

LIQUIDS LIQUIDS LIQUIDS!!! No juice or soda. Water only. This is so important. Diarrhea can cause dehydration fast in children.

Your son needs liquids so he doesn't get dehydrated from losing fluids in the diarrhea, but it won't firm up his stools. Have you tried the BRAT diet? When my son had bad diarrhea it really helped to firm up his stools. BRAT stands for banana, rice, applesauce, and toast. He doesn't have to eat all those things unless he likes them all, but just a couple of them will really help. My son loved plain toast cut in sticks or cubes, banana chunks, and applesauce. You feed them other stuff too of course just mix in the BRAT stuff too. I think a day or two of that and my son was doing much better. I have no idea what the white lumps are in his stool, but it's something I would definitely run by the doctor (maybe save some stool to show the doc). I hope your son gets better soon!

My 11month old son had the same thing a month ago. I am serious when I say those diapers were turning my stomach and could (and did) clear the room! I took him to the doctor and it turned out that he had two ear infections = the diarreha was just his body's reaction to it. Besides the antibiotics I gave him lots of yogurt (I read that the bact. in yogurt helps fight the diarreha) and plenty of Pedialite.

I don't know if you've tried the "BRAT" diet. (Bannans, Rice, Applesauce, Toast) I know when we've had babies come to the clinic with diarrhea that is the one of the first thing we suggest. The blander the foods the better. As long as Austin is drinking plenty of fluids and not having more than 10 diarreha diapers a day, it should run it's course and eventually stop.
