Help Me...... - Arlington,TX

ok, I wasn't an adult, but I do remember it when I had it done in 2nd grade.I remember I missed about 2 weeks of school though. The first week, my throat was sore and I couldn't talk very well, but I don't remember it being that bad and I was a big weenie! :) I do remember what I loved- eating LOTS of ice cream, jello and OJ. The ice cream part was awesome- chocolate with marshmallows- yum! :)

I had mine out when I was almost 19 years old, and it wasn't near as bad as all the scary stories everyone told me! I had lots of people telling me awlful stories-why do they do that?
When I woke up I had a very very sore throat, and it stayed sore for a while, but truthfully I had a c section-and if you have had that-you can handle this fine! The thing is that it will get better each day. After that-I very rarely got the sore throats I used to get so often that made me so sick. If you are getting your toncils out it is probably because you had had strep, on toncilitis too often. Therefore-you know what a sore throat feels like. This time sore throat, but no fever, chills, or stopped up nose.

I had mine out in my early twenties. It wasn't fun.. Stay on top of your pan meds and drink what you can....I learned some tricks... don't try to eat anything hot or cold(forget ice cream, go for jello or pudding)... room temp is the best...also mashed potatoes are too lumpy and thick. Don't drink soft drink because the carbination hurts. It will take time to heal and then you will feel SO much healthier!

I have had a c-section and it was more painful for a longer period of time than tonsils out:) Just have someone to wait on you for about 3-4 days and you'll be good:)

My partner had her tonsils and adnoids removed when she was 26 years old. The surgey went EXTREMELY well , and after a few days she slowly got back to her normal self. REALITY? You will have a fever and of course you will be in pain. But you will be okay. I promise you , you will be just fine. A few days of a pain for a lifetime result? It's no biggie. In and out. Nothing bad is going to happen to you either. Just really push yourself to drink lots of fluids, popsicles, warm chicken broth, jello . And instead of mashed potatoes if you can find a place like La Madeline, Potbelly or some place that has potato soup that way its not so thick. Good luck hun and YOU ARE GOING TO BE OKAY !

I had my tonsils out 2 years ago at 38. I had strep throat and problems for more then a year. Yes a tonsilectomy at an older age is hard. Painful and not something to be taken lightly. However the flip side of it was/is that my throat doesn't hurt anymore and my voice sounds normal again. The first day wasn't bad it was day 2-about 4 that were hard. A positive attitude goes along way to getting you through it. Have a lot of cool stuff to drink. You won't want to eat much of anything so get some drinks like ensure or something. No soda as the bubbles will hurt. My Dr wanted me to drink a sip or 2 of water often so the scabs wouldn't get to dry. After a week I was back to normal and after a few weeks I could eat whatever. Just don't over do it!

I was 20 when I had mine out and it was no big deal, do not worry about it. Mine was out patient surgery, the worst thing about the surgery was people talking to me. I did not feel like talking back mainly because I was just to tired from the anesthesia. I would recommend that you have plenty of stuff around that you can eat, because you will want soft stuff. It was really not that bad, I promise! One bad thing that I remember was yawning, it was kind of painful to yawn for a couple months after the surgery.

if you've had a c section, this will be a breeze! your throat will hurt for a few days and all will be fine! don't worry about it, it will only feel like a bad soar throat and you get all the ice cream and popsicles you want without anybody calling you a sissy! make sure hubby has these items stocked before you come home from the hospital and tell him to treat you like a princess and tend to your every need while you heal! i had mine out when i was 27 and then i had two children. the pain was in no way comparable to that! you'll be just fine! enjoy your new throat and your better sickness recovery as it will improve your life!

Okay...so it's totally normal to be scared about surgery. It doesn't matter how old you are. I've never had my tonsils out but I have had 3 other surgeries as an adult. I'm also an RN and can tell you that the first 24 hours will be the worst. After that it's all uphill!! You will more than likely get a prescription for pain medicine. Don't try to be tough, TAKE IT!!! I recommend taking it every 4 hours for the first 24 hours. This will help keep your pain under control and will actually help you heal faster (you'll also sleep better too lol) I imagine that your throat will be sore but you'll get to eat lots and lots of ice cream which always makes me feel better :-} You might feel sick to your stomach right after surgery and that's from the anesthesia. they can give you medicine for that in the recovery room. I think that you're going to do just fine!!! I hope that getting your tonsils removed helps you in the long run. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers.

I have heard of adults having theirs out with no complications. I guess it is natural to be a little scared , but I'm sure you are going to be just fine. You'll just have a sore throat for a bit, and have to eat jello or something cool and soft the first meal or two. Just try to get your mind on positive pleasant things, as dwelling on it will get you.

I had mine out at 24...it was rough I'm not going to lie. I had an adverse reaction to the anesthesia so had vomiting right after surgery so that made an out-ptient surgery turn into a 2 day stay. I would highly encourage help for the first 5 days at home....sleeping a lot. Do what the others are saying and stay up on your pain meds and continue to drink, drink, drink. I agree with there will not be a lot of ice cream eating; it didn't feel good at all. Room temperature soft foods and definitely NO soft drinks. Good luck and prayers will be sent up.

WAYYY back in the 70's, it was brutal to get your tonsils out, my father almost died, and he was in his late twenties. I remember the Dr. saying "tonsils, are like wisdom teeth, women hardly know you took them, and men have been known to die from them" So, what I can tell you is, it is the year 2008, and I am so very sure you will be in a lot better hands than those people of 30 years ago. Be sure to ask any questions you have before hand, and follow all after care instructions like the bible! You will be fine, but just in case I will pray for you!

Although I have heard that it is harder on adults than kids to have the tonsils removed, it will be ok. I have a friend who had hers taken out at about your age and she survived. The recovery time is a little longer, but she weathered it just fine. She was really glad to finally have it done and not be sick all the time because of tonsillitis or ear infections. Just say a prayer and know that you will be held in the palm of God's hand while you are having the surgery and during the recovery.

R. it is a scary thing but if you are like I was you have no choice. I was 25 when I had mine out. I had 3 surgeries but I had a very bad case. The surgery itself is not that bad.... but you MUST make sure you drink a lot of liquids after they are removed. That is what I did not do. I hemoraged (sp) because I did not drink. Do what your doctor says and you'll be fine. A lot of adults can go through the surgery just fine....drink...drink...drink

I didn't have tonsil surgery, but I had knee surgery when I was 17 - it went fine. I say treat yourself to your favorite ice cream, make sure your fiancee babys you, and I think buy one of those kid toys - magnadoodle - so you don't have to talk much and can write what you need. :)

My daughter had her tonsils out at 22. You will have a monster sore throat. Grab some popsicles, any creamy soup, and jsut baby yourself. My gilr was miserable but it passed. Good luck.

A friend of mine had this recently and she is over 40. She is also a singer so it was important that she heal completely again to be able to sing again. It was a little rough--like the worst sore throat ever but it was a fairly quick recovery. For your own sake, don't get so worked up--it won't change the reality of the situation except that your anxiety level will likely inhibit healing. Think about how great it will be to be rid of the tonsils that were obviously giving you so much trouble!

I had mine taken out when I was 25(28 now) and my mother had her's out by the same doctor when she was 53. The key to me was following the direction from the doctor to the T. Once they were out I was to keep my throat ice for the 1st 3-4 days for the swelling, drink as many cold fluids as a I could, to stay hydrated, no matter how much it hurt. Which I will be honest it did at first, but the cold feels good and keeping the wounds moist helps them heel faster. I was actually eating solid food in about 5 days. They will given you pain medications to that will help you out. It will probably be Tynenol w/codeine. You don't want to take anything like Advil or Asprin because it will cause you to bleed. This includes not taking them at least a week if not 2 weeks before the surgery. I can remember for sure which but they stay in your system a long time and can cause problems with bleeding during your surgery. I did have a bleed 14 days out from surgery, but that is something that is very unlikely to happen. My tonsils were bad enough that they were rotting out of my throat so he had to cut as deep as he possibly could. But because the skin was so thin there when I choked on some tea and coughed really hard it broke that skin. I think if it weren't for me choking on the tea I would have never had any problems. Also, rest is every important. That is sleeping and trying not to use your voice very much. That was something that my mother didn't follow, and she had to be on pain medication longer than I did. My doctor told me no less than I week of rest. I took 1 1/2 weeks off from work and rested the whole time. My husband helped make sure of that. He wanted me following the doctors orders to a T as much as I was wanting to. If you are worried about the anesthesia I am sure you will be fine if you didn't have any problems with your C-section. Your tonsils being taken out will probably feel like a walk in the park compared. I can't even imagine what it was like to have that done. That is one surgery I am definitely afraid of and hope I never have to have. I am sure you will be fine. Pray about it and put your worries into God's hands. He will take care of you.
