HELP! I Can't Take Another Poop Explosion!

I'm so stressed out! My daughter's has had a problem with getting into her diaper & spreading poop everywhere for over a year. I can't tell you how many times I'd come in her room after her nap to find poop EVERYWHERE. We finally figured out that she can't get to her diaper as long as she's wearing a onesie, b/c she couldn't figure out the snaps. So, it hasn't really been a problem in a while, as long as we remember to dress her properly. But now she's figured out the snaps, and on top of it, she's obsessed with taking her diaper off ALL THE TIME. She just went pee pee in the potty for the first time a couple days ago. She came up to my husband with her diaper in her hand saying "pee pee", so he took her to the bathroom, put her on the potty, & she peed! We were pretty surprised, since we hadn't even started her potty training yet. (We'd just transitioned her to a big girl bed, & I know you're not supposed to overwhelm them) So now any time she takes off her diaper or says "pee pee", I take her to the bathroom, but she won't go. (Sidenote--we had a potty seat that fit over our toilet seat, & she peed using that twice, but ever since I brought home a little potty just for her, she won't use it. Is it the potty that's the problem? She seems a lot more interested in making Elmo talk than actually using the potty) This morning we woke up to find her room covered in poop, for the 3rd time in the last 2 weeks. My husband gave her a bath while I spot-treated her entire carpet, and stripped her bed of all the sheets & blankets. And I just now went in to her room, b/c she wasn't napping, & found it covered in poop AGAIN. I just washed those sheets! I am now OUT of Resolve. I don't know what to do. I'm so frustrated! Am I doing something wrong? Has anyone else's kid done this, or is this unheard of? I'm ready to duct tape that diaper on, & could really use some advice!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much to all the ladies who responded. No one tells you about this stuff before you become a mom! I'm sorry that many of you have had to go through it, but at the same time, glad my kid's not the only one. :) The last couple of days, I've been putting her onesie on backwards. Also, we bought her pull-up diapers, instead of ones with straps, so I think they're more comfortable for her, & if she does pull it off, hopefully she can figure out how to put it back on (her diaper's usually clean when she takes it off). Also, after she falls asleep, we go in & check on her to make sure she's still diapered, then we leave her door open, gate off the hallway, & leave our bedroom door open. So, when she wakes up, she comes right into our room instead of finding ways to pass the time with poop. :) This seems to be working so far, & I'm really crossing my fingers. Thank you ladies for your great advice!

Hi, my 22month daughter has been doing the same thing although not usually if she has poop. (She doesn't usually like yuckies so she only smeared her poop once) We tried the onesies for a while until she figured them out. Now we use duct tape and that works great. It is even hard for us to get off sometimes so I'm sure she can't get it off. She even reminds us to put it on her before she goes to bed! Good Luck!

When my son was about the same age, we had the same problem. It was aweful. We used to put duck tape all aound his diaper so he could not take it off. It was even hard for us to remove!! I know it sounds wierd, but it works!

I have a friend who had the same problem and she did duct tape and/or putting the diaper on backwards. On the good side, her daughter did train early. Good luck...I hope it gets better!

My son's nice name was Poopy Picasso. When we started putting onesies on him backwards he would get his twins sisters diaper off and "paint" it that. I was not about to duct tape both of their diapers so I went to the Children's Place and bought a dozen of their footed zipper jammies and cut the feet off. Anytime the kids went to bed, their jammies went on backwards and was secured with 2 large diaper pins. That worked for us and FINALLY he outgrew it.

Good Luck

Our daughter had that problem when she was that age. We made it into a "discovery" game. We had her sit on the pot esp when she seemed she had to go poop. She got off the pot and we explained that poop went into the potty. We had her flush the toilet and say good-bye to the poop. That is all it took. She wanted to say bye to the poop from there on out.

We did use duct tape on our son's diapers. He never spread poop around, but he did start taking his diaper of, so I knew it was only a matter of time. We only used the duct tape when he was napping and it worked until he learned not to take his diaper off. Good luck

Hi DaVinci!
It is somewhat normal. My son (now 4 1/2) was a poop spreader. We were able to narrow his down to attention seeking behaviors (sometimes). They do grow out of it. I was so terrified that he would never grow out of it and I would be known as the mom of the kid who played with his poop.

You can put the onesie on backwards so she can't get to the snaps (as easily).

What we did with our son is to have him help us clean up the poop. It was gross, but he started to see that it wasn't really as "fun" if you were a part of the clean up crew.

I hope this helps and I hope she grows out of it soon!
