I am coming down with a cold and I feel so terrible. Is there anything I can take to relieve some of my symptoms? I have the typical sneezing, runny nose, sore throat, headache symptoms. I am breastfeeding a five month old. Thank you.

What can I do next?

boil lemons and add honey. this will help your sore throat. Also, drink lots of HOT water... as hot as you can stand it. Cold water will inhibit your immune system. Avoid sugar and dairy. Eat a lot!! Feed a cold and starve the flu. If you get really congested then you can do afrin, but watch out for reverse congestion. I have taken sudafed if I needed to, but it does affect the amount of breastmilk you produce. Increase your vitamin C (Although this works best BEFORE you get sick). Strawberries actually have more vitamin C than oranges.

the best remedey i know of was from a friend who is an acupuncturist.

Boil white part of green onions and ginger in water for about 20min. it really helps. i usually use about 4 onions and a few pieces of chopped up ginger to 2-3cups of water. keep making it and drink it all day..good luck and hope you feel better soon!

AND AVOID ALL SUGAR! sugar is an immune depresser.

Chestal Cough Syrup worked for me on the chest tightness and cough. Natural and ok for baby. Find it in health food stores. Lemon and honey with some tea for the throat. Don't forget nasal irrigation if you can do it, it helps too. I have also taken plenty of Tylenol when absolutely needed when breast feeding and my children haven't grown third ears or anything...!

Feel better soon,

The best thing I was told... which actually worked, when I was breastfeeding and got sick was to continue breastfeeding often. Not only will this boost your baby's immune system but it will help your body to fight off the symptoms. Just make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids. A healthy probiotic couldn't hurt either!

My doctor told me that I could take
1) regular strength tylenol
2) the DM type of cough syrup
3) Tylenol Sinus (or the local generic for it)
If your doctor has a weekend call line, you might want to call and double check to make sure these things are ok for you.

I've been sick for the past 3 weeks with a cold that went into a sinus infection. Those things, plus lots of hot tea, hot showers, a warm mist vaporizer, a hot water bottle and hand sanitizer so I wouldn't get my baby sick are what have sustained me. Hope you feel better soon.
