Help!!!!! Hubby's Snoring Is Keeping Me from Sleeping!

Please send help fast! I have not slept well in forever! So my hubby put on "sympathy weight" over the past year when I was pregnant. With the weight came super loud "shakes the windows" snoring! He has gone to a sleep clinic and he does not have sleep apnea - just snoring - probably from the extra weight! He has promised to try and lose the weight - for his own health - but until then what can I do?

I have tried ear plugs but I can still hear the snoring and now I am afraid I will not be able to hear the baby cry when they are in. He has tried the breath right strips, nasal spray, sleeping on his tummy etc. We don't have an extra bedroom so that's not an option - plus I want my honey next to me - but silent - not shaking the timbers. Any miracle products or ideas? I will be eternally grateful for any and all help!

So What Happened?

Thanks to all of you that sent help! I am happy to report that I am sleeping much better thanks to Snore Extinguisher Throat Spray. We got it at CVS for $18 and it has helped a ton! I have seen about a 85% reduction in my hubby's snores. Sometimes I have to wake him up again in the early morning and ask him to take another spray but all in all it's been a God-send! Hubby is still working on losing the weight too!

Since it did not start till the weight gain...then it is time
to lessen the weight. If he gained 20 pounds, then he needs
to lose 20 pounds.

I highly recommend the Snore Extinguisher Throat Spray from the drug store. We had the same situation and I had my hubby try this out of shear desperation. It works really well! He doesn't completely stop for the whole night, but I'd say it's easily a 90% reduction, which is plently for me! Good luck!

I tried the old pillow over the face treatment & it worked like a charm!!!
Just kidding!

We just bought an air purifier for our bedroom & it has made a huge difference in my husband's breathing ability at night & has reduced his snoring. I'd second the weight loss Rx. too.

Me too!!!! I can't sleep for hours because he falls asleep first and snores, then soon after I finally do get to sleep my little one wakes me up with his nightmares. The only solution I have is not a good one, but it works when desperate... take sleeping pills. It's the only way I get a good night's sleep. Target has some decently priced generic ones.

i work in an ENT office and we have a few potential solutions. everyone is very different though and weight loss is definately the best (and cheapest) solution!

until then, you could try a pair of westone snoreplugs. they are custom fit earplugs that are specially designed to help reduce the frequencies that are in snoring. they definately work better than "one size fits all" plugs but it will make it difficult to hear your son at night and may not block out all the snoring. they cost about $85.

an injection snoreplasty may also help. it's a relatively simple solution where the soft palate (floppy part of mouth roof) is injected to help reduce snoring. i'm not certain on the cost or if insurance covers it though.

if his tonsils or adenoids are enlarged they may also be contributing or causing the problem. they are not fun to have removed as an adult though - ouch!!

there is an ENT in dallas, craig schwimmer, who specializes in just snoring. he may be worth consulting to see what he thinks.

good luck and hopefully you'll be sleeping better soon one way or another....a glass of wine may help too :-)

I understand what you are going through. My husband, a year ago had the snoreplasty surgery here in Dallas, it seemed to help some. But, there are some days he still snores. I have to wear ear plugs and I worry that I will not be able to hear my daughter at night, if something happens. I sometimes have to go into the other room to sleep. I know that there is a snore pillow that is angled, that cost about $70.00 that is supposed to help and also try angling your bed, like putting the top of the bed on a small piece of wood, or bricks. The angle is supposed to help with the snoring, kind of like when your child has a cold and you angle the bed to help them breath. Try the Snore Center in Dallas, my husband doesn't have sleep apnea either, but they did help him some.

Ok, my hubby is the same way, I know you haven't heard that yet. My hubby has always snored, fat or skinny, always snoring. He has been to the sleep clinic, no problems. His weight DOES NOT matter, he still snores. Here are a few things I do to try and keep my sanity, and good nights sleep...First and foremost I try to get in bed before him and get to sleep before him. If that doesn't work I try to roll him on his side, the snoring stops briefly. If I do not get to sleep in that short time then I end up going to the couch. This hurts my hubby's feelings a lot, he feels bad that he snores so loudly that it keeps me up and moving to the couch, so I take an alarm clock in the Living room with me and set the alarm to go off before he wakes up so I am back in bed and he never knew I was gone!!!

You have got to get some sleep, work on your love life and romance before you both fall to sleep, but lets face it, when you are both truly sleeping neither one of you knows the other is there, Go to the couch and move back to the bed before he wakes so you both can snuggle. Sweet Dreams.

Hi N..

I'm in the same boat - with the boys and the snoring! My husband went to an ENT doctor for evaluation and he found that his tonsils are enlarged. He is going to get them taken out next month, so I'm hoping that helps. If not, we're going to have to build a separate master suite!

Good luck!

I had gotten my husband a spray that he did under his tounge - I can't remember what it was called but was at CVS - it worked really well. I also bought him something called a sleep angel - he never wore it but it has shut up his dad and his mother is eternally grateful! My dentist also has a mouthpiece that he uses and loves that stops him.

I am also in the same boat. I just have learned to roll my husband over again and again untill he either has quit snoring or I have gone to sleep. Knock he upside the head if all else does not work..haha just kidding but I do feel like doing that sometimes. Good luck

I sypathize with you so much on this one but unfortunately I don't think the solution will be that easy. My husband kept me awake for several years with his snoring. The only thing that truly helped was him losing weight. Since losing about 35 lbs. his snoring is virtually nonexistent, even on his back. I heard Dr. Oz who is frequently on Oprah say that even a 5% drop in body weight will dramatically improve a lot of sleep issues, including snoring. So, tell your hubby to get ready for that weight loss, walk around the block 45-60 minutes as much as he can (my husband gets up at 5:00 a.m. to get his done). Men lose weight so easily and quickly in the beginning, I bet it would take such a small amount of time for the both of you to notice a difference. Best wishes for a peaceful night's sleep in the not so distant future!

Hi N., I can totally relate. Unfortunately he will have to lose the weight. My husband's magic number is 208lbs. He has to be below this number to keep from snoring. We have been married almost 15 years and off and on I have to sleep all over the house. Sometimes I am on the couch or wherever. My one word of advice to you until or if he loses the weight is don't let yourself get to sleep deprived. I am a Nurse Practioner so I know how this can affect your total health. You might try falling asleep before he does. THis helps me sometimes.

Hi N.,
Well I have been married 23 years and I used to brag how my husband didn't snore. Well guess what, he put on a little wieght and started snoring like what you said. I have to tell you we do not sleep together because of that reason. I hate that this has happened but it's more important to me to get a good night sleep. I use to suffer from insomnia and but don't any more so getting a good night sleep without medication is very important to me. without sleep it will put you on edge about everthing. Make you less patient and get your resistance down. So until the weight comes off and the snoring improves and would make the couch as compfortable as possible.
Sorry
Lonie

Hello N.,

I found this on the side with your response and checked it out - I'm the one who snores in my family! I have allergies really bad and that causes the snoring. Both my husband and I are very light sleepers - sometimes I have woken myself up with my snoring!

We do several things to ease the situation. The easiest is the old poke to cause me to roll over. Most of the time this helps stop it temporarily.

We run a HEPA air purifier in the room - it help clean the air/remove allergens and the hum helps mask the noise.

The doctor prescribed Astelin and Flonase, nasal sprays to treat the nose and I take an over the counter clone of Zyrtec.

When I remember to, I also use a nasal rinse. NeilMed sells a nasal rinse bottle and small packets of a saline mixture to mix with water. You rinse the allergens out of the nasal passages and it really helps, much more than just a saline spray. When the allergen count is high, I try to rinse in the morning and in the evening. (Watch out, sometimes when you lean forward, water will drip out of the nose!)

We use a humidifier and it helps a lot. Keeps the throat moist and it makes a humming noise so you can sleep easier. Hope that helps!!!

Hi N.! You might consult your dentist and see if they have heard of an appliance called the "Snore Guard". I worked in the dental field for many years before deciding to stay at home with my lovely children.

This aparatus works by keeping the lower jaw moved forward allowing the airway to stay unobstructed. Its not pretty, and your husband would have to comply, but when sleep is an issue...its an easy solution.

Hope this gives you some help. ~P.

Boy do I know exactly what you are going through. My husband is the king of snoring!! We too tried everything. It got so bad that he went to see an Ear, Nose, Throat specialist. He participated in a sleep study because of the snoring but also because he has sleep apnea. As a result from the tests he qualified to get this machine that pumps oxygen into him. Helps him breathe therefore not snore. My dad also has one and uses it everynight. My mom says that it works wonders and when my husband wears it I finally can get some real sleep. It's a bit uncomfortable at first because you have to wear this mask. The hose to it is long so you are able to move around but getting used to the mask on your face may take some time. Not sure if your husband would benefit or needs one of these machines which is called a CPAP machine but I thought I would let you know about it. It might be worth asking about. It's less evasive than surgery and the surgery sometimes don't work. Good Luck and remember you aren't alone!!!

My husband's snoring kept me awake at night when we were first married. We bought him a memory foam pillow and it helped a lot. Here's a link to one like it at JCPenney's. We've been married over 5 years and he's on his second pillow. (Going to bed first to fall asleep first also helped!)
