Hi everyone!
My daughter is almost 4 and she woke up last night with a 102 degree fever. She tossed and turned all night and when she slept, she talked in her sleep A LOT (this is not normal). This morning she still had the fever. I have given her two doses of Tylenol. (one last night and one this morning) She tells me that nothing hurts. I have asked about her ears, her belly, her throat, etc. All she wants to do is lay around. She is not even interested in TV. She does go to preschool. Has anyone else experienced this? A high fever without any symptoms (that we are aware of at least)? Thanks so much!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to EVERYONE who responded - I really appreciate it!!! This site is truly amazing! :o) I did call her MD and spoke to the nurse. I was told that since there were not any symptoms something could be brewing but that there was no reason to bring her in yet since they would not be able to diagnose her. The high fever and vomiting were not enough. (since the fever could bring on the vomiting). Well..after 3 days of the high fever and her finally telling me that her throat hurt, I took her to our Pediatric Urgent Care. They took a throat culture but it came back negative. They send it to another lab to do a 2nd check so we will find out for sure tomorrow if it is 100% negative. So far it just seems that it is a virus. Hopefully that is all that it is. And for all of those moms that said that Motrin is better than Tylenol - you sure are correct! That is the only thing that brought her fever down for any length of time. Again - thank you all so much!!! Even though it is always best to call the MD, this site is a wonderful resource and I have already learned a great deal from your experiences.

102 is not high for kids. They can go up to 108! i know crazy. let her rest and push the liquids. cool bathes, and cool wash cloth on the head can help.

I think this is reasonably common... My daughter is 5 and had something similar recently. We went to the pediatrician because her fever lasted for several days. She said it would either develop into something that could be diagnosed, like an ear infection or she would start throwing up, or it would go away. Hers eventually went away but it took a couple more days.

I found that Motrin controlled her fever better than Tylenol. You can give Tylenol when her fever starts to come back up if you can't give the Motrin yet. They are different medicines.

Good luck.

Sounds like shes starting to get another set of molars...they don't always hurt..ask her if her mouth or gums itch. Would still do as they other Moms say and alternate with tylenol and motrin..could also be an ear infection...my oldest was so used to getting them she said they didn't hurt anymore.

I have two kid's and my when my daughter was 4ish, she had high fever for a couple of days and then came down w/ the Roseola rash. A lot of people wrote about Strep & Chicken Pox, both of which she has had, but she has symptoms before the fever. On the otherhand, My son would get high fevers, like 104's and 105's, with no systems at all. I can't tell you how many times I took him into the Dr. or the ER! The first time it happened, I remember going to the Dr. on Monday, Wednesday, & Friday because it wouldn't go away, and it was sooo high! I think I even took him to the ER on that first time to get a different opinion. They explained to me that he has a "High Cooker" and his body via the is fighting some kind of infection and unless the fever was over 104 or causing discomfort, then let it run its course. If it was causing discomfort then I could piggy back w/ Tylenol & Motrin. I gotta tell you though, not giving him anything was really tough, it was a helpless feeling.and when I would tell people I would get negative comments. One dad in the preschool told me that I was killing my son by not giving him tylenol. Nice, huh! Anyway, since he was not an infant anymore they weren't worried about seizures.

Good luck and I hope your daughter feels beter soon!

If she is listless, that's a symptom. I agree with the other poster, try alternating Motrin with Tylenol. If she doesn't snap out of it by the end of the day, take her to urgent care or her pediatrician just to be sure she's ok. Everyone in our house recently had some flu bug that was going around where the first symptom was fever and achiness, and then became a nasty head cold. I'm so ready for flu season to be over already. Ugh.

Hi M., I felt compelled to write to you since I went through something similar with my son. He ended up having strep throat (without any throat ache or any other symptoms until after the fever was gone) It started as a fever, only lasted 2-3 days, then came the pain and nodules in his hands and feet and the horrible rash. My doctor also didn't think anything was wrong when I first brought him in since he had no other symptoms other than the fever the week prior and said his feet and hands hurt. SHe turned us away and said keep an eye on him. I was back the next day because I knew something was wrong and a "brush-off" was not acceptable for me. My son know has reactive arthritis and is on antibiotics for the next 2 years since contracting strep throat again can be very dangerous and have side effects to his heart. I don't want to scare you or anything but it was a very scary ordeal we went through and I had no idea that strep throat can sometimes develop into rheumatic fever if not diagnosed and treated right away. Definitely if you feel it is something out of the norm for her, get her checked out. Good luck and I hope for a speedy recovery for your daughter.

HI M.,

Chicken Pox also starts with a fever. Check her belly or back and look for anything that might be a spot. They usually start slow. Anything viral will knock the energy right out of her so this is a possibility. AVOID Motrin or Aspirin until you know for sure. Reye's syndrome can occur because of the combination of those meds and the chicken pox virus. (First signs usually appear within 21 days of exposure.)

God bless,

M.

Talking in her sleep is probably because of the fever. Try alernating the tylenol and motrin and call your pediatrician. Maybe there is a virus going around that they know of that fits this description, and maybe they will want to see her because of the listlessness. If you feel like something is wrong, listen to your gut. You won't be the first Mom to be safe rather than sorry, and who cares if you just get told that she will be fine (that is what we all want to hear anyway, and why we pay doctors!)

They may want to check for a UTI, sometimes there are no other symptoms, I have a daughter who feels nothing when she has a UTI.

My son is 7 and he would have this happen once in awhile (and it still happens) - fever with no symptoms. It could just be a virus. Our Doctor recommended Motrin for higher fevers - it supposedly works better. Have your doctor check out your daughter just to be safe.

Good luck!

Hi M......I agree with Stephanie...sounds like Roseola is coming (or chicken pox). Google Roseola so you can see what it looks like, it will most likely be on her tummy/back area....but are not always raised bumps and not always red. They can take on a thin "lacy" like appearance, sometimes very hard to notice. My daughter's showed up much easier in the bath. Thankfully, it is of little or no discomfort to them. AND, it usually appears 24-48 hours AFTER the fever disappers. So, keep an eye on the fever, then when it breaks.....keep an eye on her for another 2-3 days. Good luck!

This has happened to my son twice within 3 months. The fever lasted less than 24 hours each time (102 and 104) and he had no other symptoms. Took him to the doctor both times. Both times they couldn't find any reason for the fever and gave him motrin to lower it. I'm not sure if this is connected in any way, but both times we noticed that he had grown because his pants looked like capris. Weird...I know.

Yes, my two-year old just had this virus that behaved very similarly. She had a fever for three days and her only symptoms were those associated with the fever (e.g. malaise, no appetite, discomfort). She threw up just one time, probably just because her fever peaked. I too thought it was odd that she had a fever, but no obvious infection, but I talked to the nurse at the pediatrician's office and this generally fits the symptoms of one of the two viruses that are going around right now. Just keep her hydrated and manage the fever with ibuprofin. Hope she feels better quickly!
(Also, the nurse mentioned that with this one the fever tends to be worse in the evening and at night and ease up in the morning hours.)

My daughter (2 1/2) just had a virus (we think) that was a high fever - up to 105, with no other symptoms. The emergency room did not want her to come in unless she had the fever for 3 days, or it went above 105. Also, motrin helped to get the fever down better than tylenol. And it lasts a lot longer too. You want to be sure she gets lots of fluids... popsicles, jello, juice, etc. Good luck... its so hard to see your kiddos sick.

Roseolla.

It comes on suddenly with a high fever and lingers for up to five days, I think. At the end, when the fever is going away a rash appears over their entire body...first in the tummy and chest area. At that point, when you get the rash, you're no longer cantagious, but it's the only point where you can be sure that it is roseolla.

As long as the fevers don't get above 105, it's a pretty easy illness to deal with. Just treat with tylenol and motrin was the advise we got. The rash doesn't bother them at all and takes a while to leave but it's all good.

Good luck!

You've gotten a lot of great suggestions. If her fever isn't getting down to normal you can give both motrin and tylenol at the same time. The 2 together were recommended by ER on visit and their ped also agreed, if they have a high fever it will get it back to normal. Prior to learning this I was only giving tylenol and it only went from 102 to between 100-101. Good luck.

Please do not give your child anything to bring down a fever UNLESS they are uncomfortable (chills, aches) or it has gotten to something like 103 and over and then try a warm /cool bath if they aren't having major chills. Also know that if you give someone Tylenol you have just put their own immune system in a decline for up to 21 days. Tylenol depletes Glutathione. Not a good thing to do! Try Motrin instead and important to look for the dye free kind or if it is a pill, just wash off the dye. So many of our kids have become intolerant of dyes and you shouldn't have them anyways.

Let the fever do its work. It is fighting something. Don't stop it unless you notice green leaking from the nose, rubbing at the ears, sore /hoarse throat / aches and pains / fever getting too high. 102 in a little one is not too high.

Had your daughter received any vaccines in the past two weeks?

If it continues on and off then I would have her swabbed for strep. This happened to my girls where for a period of 4mos they would take turns having a high fever for a few days with no other symptoms then it would go away and appear a couple of weeks later. The Dr swabbed them and it was strep.

Kids are so resilient, aren't they? :)
She is resting because that is what her body is telling her to do.
No need for fever reducers - let her body fight this on its own, which will help build her immune system (unless of course she is really miserable).

M., if the fever persists, do take her in for a check up. I have experienced this with my 4 year old, and usually it's when they complain about tummy ache or throat that I am relaxed cause I can pin point the issue. No symptoms makes me (personally) uneasy. No harm in an office visit. The fever is fighting something, it's good to know what it is.

Has she had roseola yet? It's typically a high fever for 3 days with no other or only mild cold symptoms that is followed by a rash after the fever subsides.
At 4 she is a bit old for it...but it's not unheard of.
