OK, I'm so out of practice buying gifts for 1 and 3 year olds. They have every book and toy in the world. Please, please, help me with any all suggestions. Thanks!
Maybe something for them to put their books and toys in?? I know at that age my daughters favorite things were the boxes that the toys came in. The bigger the box the better. Stuffed animals are always nice too.
I am not sure what you r relationship to the kids is, but I love when the grandparents buy us tickets for amusement parks and children's museums and then come with us. Or offer to help pay for gymnastics class or whatever activities the kids are involved in. Magazine subscriptions are good too- Babybug for the one year old and High Five for the three year old.
Entertainment like a zoo membership, museum membership, YMCA membership, lessons, classes, or childrens theater tickets.
Bins for toys. Things they need - shoes, pjs, jackets, clothes. Magazine subscriptions (like Ranger Rick, Jr) for the older one. Maybe something to entertain them in the car or a new educational video if you allow TV. Play Dough.
I am a BIG lover of wooden puzzles for these ages!
And stacking cups, those are cool...so are bath toys for this age!

For the 3 year old: Bike helmet, more books, rain coat, umbrella, rain boots, bike basket, new pillow or cozy blanket, educational video games, play tent, fishing pole, tackle box
For the 1 year old: More books (can they have too many?), blanket, stuffed animal, grocery cart or stroller, and anything that can be filled up and dumped right back out!
Can you take the 3 yr old shopping to choose their own gift? Toys, clothes, even food. If they get to choose it, they are happy. My daughter got money for her birthday and we went to ToysRUs for her to choose her own gift. It was an enlightening shopping trip. To her, the $16 horse and the $2 pink castle shaped container of bubbles were equally valuable.
