My 7 year old girl has the driest skin on her hands that I have ever seen. Her fingers and knuckels stay red. The skin on her fingers is almost scaley. Her knuckels crack and bleed. We put Vasoline and gloves or socks on her hands and night and Gold Bond lotion on them during the day. This will keep them from craking but they are still really dry and icky looking. Does anyone else have any advise that we can try?

What can I do next?

Thank you all for your great suggestions! Over the weekend we got a jar of the Eurcerin (sp) cream and tried that. I couldn't beleive the diffrence!!! After only a few nights her hands are almost normal. We're going to give a few of the other suggestions a try also to find one that is a little lighter for during the day. Thanks again!!

My 4 year old son had the worse dry skin, the doctors diagnosed it as Ecezma. We tried everything to over the counter lotions to even doctor prescribed ointments. We finally found the ABC line from ARBONNE. It's bathwash and lotion. This was about a year ago and we haven't had any problems with his skin since. My mom sells it but you can go onto the website and order it online. It also comes with sunscreen that is awesome as well. Hope this information is helpful

The most amazing product on the planet is Renew Lotion. You can only get it at Melaleuca, which is an online store. My daughter had eczema and it's the only thing that helped. The problem with Eucerine, Vaseline and other products, is that they are topical, so the first time she washes her hands or takes a bath it washes away. Renew is not a glycerine product so it actually absorbs into the skin. And the best part is you don't have to use it every day. Since it's absorbed in the skin, it doesn't wash away. So the initial cost of the product is a little more, but you don't use it as often as the over the counter stuff, so it actually ends up being cheaper in the long run and it's so worth it because it actually works!

If you would like for me to help you find out how to get it, let me know!

Ok, this is gonna be a little expensive but it's worth it...will cost you $25-$30 bucks but will work better than Eucerin... Get Cetaphil. There are 2 products of this brand that you need for your daughter, one is a body wash that you litterally just squirt and slather on (w/o a washcloth or anything) in the shower and rinse off...DON'T USE SOAP ANYMORE and then follow with the Cetaphil lotion. Get the sensitive skin version. I've tried this on my daughter for the last 2 weeks and we are no longer using the prescription drugs for the red welts, nor is it itching any longer. We've tried everything on the market: Vanicream (which was nice but the bars dwindled pretty quick), Eucerin, Aquafor, Vaseline, Crisco...name it, it's been done.

Also, make sure that she doesn't take showers/baths everyday...every other day at the most. And make sure that all your detergents are clear and free of fragrances or dyes...this too could be aggrevating it. Good luck!

Hi S., I've been a nurse for 35 yrs. At the drugstore look for a green square can of "BAG BALM". Farmers use it to cure the dry cracked udder of cows!!! I always used it for everything concerning skin with my patients. Last night my husband wanted me to look at the side of his foot (he thought he had stepped on glass). It was just dry, cracked skin. He used bag balm & said it was gone this am. Try it! Best Regards, C. P.

You already have some great ideas. One that works for us is this:
Mix petroleum jelly (the big tub) with one bottle of baby lotion (the pink stuff) and one tub of vitamin E cream. Use your mixer to get it mixed very well together.
It hydrates the skin and, with the petroleum jelly, has some real staying power as well as protecting the skin.
Good luck!

I have a daughter with very sensitive skin, and mine is as well. Any kind of lotion burns when I put it on. The thing that I've found is actually a lotion bar. It comes in a round tin, and it's called Jordan Essentials. I love it because it doesn't burn my dry skin, and it's easier to carry around than a bottle of lotion.
Good luck.

BeautiControl has a product called Extreme Repair that is wonderful! I do child care and wash my hands constantly, as well as a part time job where I handle money. My hands have always cracked and bled all winter, but this has kept them from bleeding for 2 winters now. I love it so much that I signed up as a consultant just to get the lotion! If I can help you, just let me know. Or go to the website and find your local consultant.

We had a similar problem with my son, we used Aquaphor it is kinda a gel stuff like vaseline but worked great. Since it is her hands and she would probably love it, u could try one of the parafin wax hand dips. And my last suggestion would be to get this stuff that I bought from Arbonne, it was like sea salt scrub or something like that, it was great. Oh, one more is Satin hands, it is from Mary Kay and is a process with like 3-4 steps. But wow is it worth it!

Both of my kids have excema. You might need to get it under control first with a prescription or some hydrocortisone. At the same time, try Vanicream or CeraVe cream. You can find this in the lotion section at Walgreens (near the bottom row). We use this consistently (1-2x/day) at our house, and it really helps. FYI... we tried Bag Balm once on my son. It gave him a bad rash.

You might also try the Neutragena (sp) hand cream if it is just on her hands. It is a thicker lotion then most and a little goes a long way. It is not greasy like the Eucerin is. My SIL also uses the Mary Kay night cream that comes with the satin hands on her girls when their Excema gets bad. She puts it on at night with the gloves like you said you do with the vasoline.

Hello S., The best lotion I have ever used for my severe dry skin is from the company Melaleuca. It's called Renew Intensive Skin Care. It is none greasy and no perfumes. It's a little pricey, but the company has 100% guarantee.

We have also had great success with the Shea butter lotion. I have heard that vaseline is a bad idea, because it is actually a petroleum product. Good luck.

Exzema runs in my family, and I know that cornhuskers oil is really great at hydrating skin. It is very concentrated, so I would put it on at night w/the gloves... Just a suggestion, but worth a try. I have seen it work wonders with the driest of skin. Good luck!

Have you tried the aveeno for dry skin? Grandson had excema when he was just a few months old an dr. told his mother to use that on him. If you have some online friends from different countries mostly england or au. you can ask them about sending you a product called sudocrem it can only be purchased in united kingdom or au. I have some online friends at both ends, an one of them sent me this an I use it on xavier.

I would try Jordan Essentials. They have helped our family. I work for the post office and my hands get very dry and crack from all the paper products. The Coconut & Papaya is what Nancy (the owner and founder) recommended I use. Oatmeal, Milk, and Honey is another good one to use for dry skin. Email me if you have questions or would like to try the products.

I have had this problem all of my life just as you described. My knuckles were red and would bleed, the tops of my hands were cracked and bleeding. I was prescribed Mometasone Furoate Cream. It's expensive, but really works. The down side though is that it compromises the skin, thinning it. I recently had a baby, so during my pregnancy I couldn't use the cream. This is going to sound weird, but I started using my daughters Huggies baby lotion with lavender and chamomile and within a few days I noticed a huge difference in my hands. I wasn't even trying to use it to make a difference, it just did. Good luck and let us know what worked for you.

My 6 year old has the same problem! She has had exzema since she was a baby to the extent of having to go to a derm. she went bald in a 2-3 inch area when she was about 3 it was awful but we solved with a prescription in no time! She also has it on her legs, feet, hands, elbows we do have rx dipolene for flair ups but nothing would touch her feet (heels would crack and bleed) so a freind gave me a bottle of RENEW lotion and I could not believe my eyes nor could my husband! It was the best thing to ever use and she never goes a night without it! We have been using it for about 2 years now and have only had few flair ups when it gets really cold or she stays overnight and forgets to use it but within 2-3 days she will be back to normal! I always buy mine on e-bay you can get it for about $20-25 for a 20 ounce bottle it usally will last 6 months maybe longer! WE use everynight and she takes bottle to school for her hands uses it after handsanitizer it seems help alot!! I would highly recomend it! GOOD LUCK!! Rhonda

My girlfriends daughter has exzema (sp) and treats it specifically fro her condition. But if you don;t think that is it then it sounds like the kind of crazy dry skin I get in the winter b/c I wash my hands 57,000 times day! haha... I use a lotion called "Corn Huskers Lotion" its sort of the consistency (and look!) of snot, but I found that it works really well. MY husband swears by it too. Sometimes it does burn if my skin is really in an irritated state, so maybe try it in the morning rather than at night after her skin is well rested and somewhat in better condition than it might be after an entire day. Good luck. I;ve actually also used vegetable oil on my hands before when they've been really bad, I woudln;t recommend touching anything after you goop up with it, but it sure helps them feel better for awhile. :o)

Usually about once a year (winter) I get that same type of problem (but not as severe). I use lotion a lot & Aquaphor (aquaphor is a good healing vasalene looking stuff that the NICU uses to protect the skin of preemature babies). It last about a week for me.
But, if her hands are still that dry after that kind of treatment I would take her to her dr. or a dermatologist. You might also try running a humidifier in her room.

God bless!

Me and my hubby had the same issue as your daughter.
We found Aquaphor ointment and Aveeno lotion was an effective combination. Use the Aquaphor first, it will heal the cracks, then switch over to the Aveeno (Equate has a similar product that works just as well, just make sure it has oatmeal in it). Good luck :)

S.,

I know a couple of the girls wrote you to try the RENEW from Melaleuca and I too would recommend it. My daughter has problems with her hands and is a hair stylist too so she has to keep her hands from getting sore and this is the ONLY lotion she has found that works. Melaleuca is a company who has products without all the chemicals for your entire home, from body, to cleaning, to laundry, and don't forget the pets too! I have used Melaleuca for at least 10 years and won't use other cleaning products! Give it a try, if you want just a sample tube, they are available. Hopefully you can find something that will work for you.

I used to have the same problem. I highly recommend stopping the use of any type of commercial soap. Getting something like a pure olive oil soap (Kiss My Face makes a wonderful one) for body and handwashing and if she's washing dishes the natural soaps made with coconut oils (there are actually several commercial brands of this available). Make sure there are no fragrances in the one you choose. I started using natural oil soaps this year and I haven't even had to put lotion on my hands once, and I used to crack and bleed even with lots of lotion!www.cosmeticsdatabase.com is a great resource to help you find soaps and other cosmetic products that are safer. If you type in hand or body soap it will pull up a list with a number beside it from 0-10, 0 is the safest, 10 is the worst. There are ALOT of 0 soaps, and you can google the product to find out where you can buy it (The Kiss My Face brand I can buy at Whole Foods and some Dierbergs stores). Most, if not all, of the 0 soaps are going to be natural and made from oils. It's an easy and cheap fix, not to mention better for you all around!

I had this same problem when I was growing up and unfortunately, it lasted into adulthood. Fortunately, my doctor suggested Eucerin Intensive Hand and Body Repair Creme. It must be the cream and not the lotion. It works wonderfully! It goes on pretty thick and feels sticky for a few minutes but it works like a charm. It heals cracked skin and does not hurt when applied to open cracks. It relieves the pain, moisturizes the skin, and leaves hands much smoother. I have now used it for almost nine years when my skin is extra dry and I love it! No more bleeding knuckles and painful red blotches! It is not really cheap (about $6-$8 for the bottle and $14 for the tub), but it works! Good luck! Oh by the way, Eucerin is available at most grocery stores, Target, Walmart, Walgreens, etc. so it should be easy to find. Have a good day!

I have been using Walgreens brand moisturizer for sensitive, dry skin. I tried it because it was comparable to the more expensive (Cetaphil, Eucerin) brand names. To my surprise I really like it and so does the rest of my family. It comes in a big jar for around $10...I recently bought more, it was on sale...buy one, get one free! So now we are well stocked. I have 2 sons with eczema and it's really helped with their dry skin. I even put a little bit on my face in the evenings after I wash it with my regular face wash. It's not greasy or heavy either.
