Hi moms. My almost 8 month old daughter has started cutting teeth just a few days ago. she so far has been dealing with it alright (i know it's a long road) but when I got home last night she had a fever. I know they can be caused by teething so I gave her some tylenol and she still had one this morning so I gave her some more. What do you all do to help the side effects of teething as well as the teething? Could use any suggestions - thanks :)

What can I do next?

I used to recommend Hyland's teething tablets but those have been recalled recently. The Hyland's teething gel is okay still I think.

I would invest in one of those mesh feeders. they aren't that expensive. My DD LOVES frozen bananas or ice cubes in them. I give her tylenol (Ibuprofen if she's having a really rough time) to help her sleep at night. I hate that the Hylands tablets got pulled... they helped a lot. Don't bother trying Humphrey's tablets, they suck. They are super-hard and take a while to dissolve.

My DD is a horrible teether. She gets a fever and is super cranky. She also stops eating. The experts all say that fevers aren't associated with teething... but generations upon generations of experienced mothers disagree. As long as her fever doesn't get really high, and she isn't getting lethargic, I wouldn't worry too much. Main thing is to make sure that she is having enough wet diapers.

Hi J.,

We used Hylands as well. My son really liked the teething tablets.

I also wanted to give you another option. My husbands cousin is really "granola" and introduced us to an amber teething necklace. My son would wear it all day and I would take it off at night. I may be crazy but I think it helped a lot. His disposition was totally different. Baltic amber has succinic acid in it which is a natural pain reliever. I've known people to wrap it around their kids ankle when sleeping if it makes you nervous to have your daughter wear it while sleeping. There should be a knot after each stone so that if it does break the stones don't fall off. My son is 2 now and he still wears it now and then. He was so CUTE with it on when he was little and in a much better mood. I ordered mine from a company in Montana for less than $25. Google "amber teething necklace" and you should get a few places to pop up. One is in the UK that is pretty reputable from what I can tell. I know this sounds crazy, and if I was reading it I would consider it crazy, but in my experience it worked....and $25 was well worth my sanity and my little guy's happiness! (and for the record my son would cut 3-4 teeth at a time and we didn't have any big problems!)
Good luck and hope your daughter gets to feeling better.

Both of my girls ALWAYS ran fevers with teething. My 9 m/o tends to run high temps when teething. She also drools like a saint bernard and gets a runny nose when teething. We feeze wet wash clothes for her to chew on. She prefers those over frozen teething toys. We also give her motrin (every 6 hours) when necessary for the pain and use baby Orajel to help with the pain as well. Careful not to overuse the Orajel as it can harden their gums which makes it even tougher for the tooth to break through. Good Luck and God Bless!

The baby could get diarreha. i would also make sure if she has a fever still on Monday I would also take her to the doctor. She could also have an ear infection. You can alternate tylenol and motrin. Try some hylands teething tablets. Wet some washclothes and freeze them for her to chew on. Good luck hope she feels better soon.

I love Hylands natural teething gel. It has no side effects or numbing, just relief. My little guy loves this stuff and gets excited when he sees it haha. I use that along with Tylenol, and some cuddles, and an Elmo's World dvd, after that he is a happy camper.

Frozen washcloths never worked for us, neither did teething rings or anything like that. I just let him chew on whatever he likes the best.

Best wishes, and hope that you find something that works!

I know that if you are going to give a baby pain relievers that you should try to stay away from advil but I was told that here and there it is okay for them and that advil works better than tylenol to reduce the swelling and inflamation that she is having from her teeth breaking thru. You might want to try giving her the advil before you put her down at night and if she wakes in the night switch back to tylenol. My DD is currently cutting her molars and she is having a tough time too. There are also teethers that you can purchase that look like little popsicle holders with a mesh cloth pouch that you can fill with fruit and either freeze or refridgerate and let her suck/chew on. Also try taking a raw carrot and peel the carrot, chop off the ends and let her gum that, just make sure to watch her closely with that one. A basic clean washcloth with an end soaked in water and then left in the fridge works great. Now that my little one is a bit older we give her frozen green beans to chew on because it allows her to get to her back teeth better and she is very happy with that.
Good Luck and Im sure it will get better soon

From what I was told in my parenting class teething never associates with a fever so get her checked out. As for the teething I would give her baby Origel it works great. I use it on my son, he started cutting teeth at like 6-7 months old and now is almost a year old with 8 teeth. Also try getting some cheese cloth and putting some froze fruits in it, tie it up and let her chew on it. It not only tastes good but feels good too. Or you could try a regular teether that's frozen. Good luck. :)
