Hi Moms,

I am trying to reach out to other moms who juggle a business, a household, and a husband/sig. other or just have stressful lives. How do you deal with the stress? I've recently started my own online business and we've had a major hiccup. Thankfully it's now fixed and we can start processing orders again, but the stress got to me in a bad way. I have Lupus & fibromyalgia and I went into a flare right at the time my business needed me the most. My usual relaxation techniques didn't work at all! I don't like being in pain (who does??!!) and I don't like taking the medicines I have to take to alleviate the pain. Any hints or tricks that you have found that help would be appreciated. I am invested in making a success of this, but I don't want to throw my health on the line because of it. Thank you.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank everyone for your wonderful advice. I've tried a few of the techniques, and so far, no flare. :-) My business partner has been told she's going to have to pick up more on her end. I think that was a big part of it. I was doing everything because I have the experience and it just proved to be too much. I realized the only way to get experience is to actually do it, so I turned over some of the reigns to her. :-) I stop work now at five pm and go hit the pool til 8. My husband and I also rescued a little dog and getting out walking him has helped immensely. Thank you again. You're replies really meant a lot and it's nice to know I'm not alone.

You sound like you have your hands full. My husband and I are both self-employed (seperate businesses) and you're right, it's really hard to find a balance and manage stress when you cannot "leave your work at the office". These are the suggestions that I've received (even though I've had a hard time implementing them.)
Set up your work times and stick to them (say 10-6 and you don't mess with it before or after)
Designate a specific area for your office and do your work there.
Delegate work to those around you. If you need help, ask.
Relish in the work that you're doing. You're obviously finding satisfaction in what you are doing and it sounds like you've worked through some big hurdles. Give yourself some credit for a job well done with a spa day!
I'd love to know more about your business! Shoot me an email at ____@____.com and feel free to check out our business at www.countrymousecitymouseindy.com

You need to check out the EGOSCUE website. I'm a certified posture alignment & pain management specialist. Fibro is something that is helped with specific movement. If you don't use it, you lose it. The more sedintary you are, the more you are going to hurt....bottom line. In addition if you sit at the computer alot, you're dealing w/ back, &/or head & neck issues. I know what e-cises (exercises) you need to be doing to help the pain & discomfort, which in turn, help you sleep better AND relieve stress. I live in Fishers and teach two classes a week doing this method. Need to find an hour for yourself to do these kinds of things. Everyone says it makes all the difference in the world.

My mother has fibromyalgia, and she swears by massage. She usually goes to a massuse once or twice a week, and since her doctor is the one that reccommended it, it's considered medically nessessary, so it's covered by her insurance. Mom says that after each session, nothing hurts amynore for at least 2 days. I'm not sure that it will work for you, but it's worth a try!

I have many health issues including burcitis and polyarthritis. The one thing that I have found that helps the most without meds is self hypnosis. Sounds kinda weird but it is just a deep relaxation technique. If you are interested in how to do it, let me know. I'm not selling anything or trying to push any products on you. In fact, you don't need anything to do this except the desire to try it. Let me know. I would be glad to help. Shannon G.

Hi E.,
There is a nutrition product out there called Reliv that I have heard helps with both the diseases you mentioned. I suffer from Chronic Fatigue and it has done wonders for me. I can get you more info if you're interested.
Dr. Bowersox (mentioned in one response) is a good resource too. My sister was actually the ghost writer on his book and she has found relief from her Chronic Fatigue Syndrome under his care.
Hang in there!! A.

It might not help with the stress, but my aunt was diagnosed with lupus and started taking beta glucan (you need to take a very pure form with no fillers and take it on an empty stomach then wait to eat). The next time she went to the doctor the lupus was GONE. The doctor was baffled.

I am not saying it will work for everyone. Do some research and make your decision. But here are a few good sites to start looking.

http://betaglucan.org/ (This site gives the history of research and lots of other information .)

http://www.aboutbetaglucan.com/a-j-lanigan-bio.asp (tied to a brand but has some good information)

http://www.beta-glucan-info.com/articles.htm (tied to a brand)

http://www.beta-glucan-13d.com/index.htm

My aunt said she felt better the day after she started taking beta glucan. In my research it seems like the best dose is 500mg for every 50 lbs of body weight. If you are feeling better, maybe your stress will at least lessen.

Maybe try soaking in a tub of bubbley hot water. Or lay down on your bed (by yourself) and listen to soft music.Or read something in the bible. These are some things that help me. Oh also being intimate with your hubby. good luck!

My heart goes out to you as I know the pain and stuggle. I have a disease like Lupus- and related to Lupus ( Antiphosholipid Syndrome) as well as Fibromyalgia. Multiple strokes have prevented me from working outside the home, but that does not keep me stress free. My flares usually only last a day or two .. unless we have the storms come through, day after day. I have done warm water swims and that can be of big help. I see someone suggested Yoga and I have been wanting to do Palettes(sp?), but have not done so as yet. Taking deep breaths and giving myself time outs where I find a quiet place and ignore the world. You and I both know that there are no cures, just treatment. Feel free to contact me if you wish. Not sure that I can be of help, but I'm a good listener. Autoimmune and stress do not play nicely with each other!

schedule "me" time and date time. you need to have some time to yourself to relax and do something for you. and you need time for your relationship, so get a babysitter and schedule dates. just having that to look forward to can help a LOT when everything gets stressful--you'll have a scheduled release for all the stress.

i'm a sahm too, and recently i've traded babysitting with a friend and it's a lifesaver. i watch hers for 2 hours, she watches mine for two hours. it's amazing how much i've been able to do without the kids around. and having an extra kid is no big deal, but the time to myself has been AMAZING! We don't do preschool or daycare, (um, duh, i'm a stay at home mom so I can be at home...) but this kid swapping is really working well for us... not to mention that my kids really love having regular playmates.

I run a home based business, go to school p/t, 11yr old DS and married. I've found having a meal plan and activity plan has been wonderful. My family knows when I am busy and what is for dinner everyday. Everything is planned out ahead of time. Our home is very organized, there's no scrambling opening every cupboard looking for something because we all know where everything is or should be.

DS is learning to laundry or at least sort it. DH helpsa lot through the house too. It is so important to develop a support network and have back up or contingency plans.

I hope that helps you, I know those are the most important points in keeping my life and business run smoothly.

It's tough to juggle everything without health problems on top of it. My acupuncturist says he can cure fibromyalgia (I've never had it). I trust him since he cured me of migraine headaches after four visits.

I don't know where your live. But my husband has fibromyalgia. He just got back from seeing Dr Bowersox who has a 15yr 85% success rate for treating it homopathicly. Dr Bowersox has a book you can find at Barnes&Noble and Boarders. If you are not close to Willoughby Ohio perhaps they know of someone in your area, they are so nice and do not retire, because there are so many with this disease that need help.

Hi,
I am a single parent of 2 and I certainly know what stress feels like. It is no fun having a full plate but one thing I do know is, GOD never gives us more than we can handle. Praying over all your circumstances and trusting in him to deliver us is what we are to do. I talk to GOD as if he was a real human being letting him know all my cares and casting it on him. I then get a relief of satisfaction knowing he will make it alright. I will put it to you like this, I wish I had the life like you, where I am married to a wonderful man of GOD, a business of my own that I control, I already have the beautiful gifted kids but I need the whole package, so my friend sometimes we have to accept where we are in life and know that GOD is behind the scenes making it better, we just have to be patient and humble and remember someone else is always in worse shape than we are. I hope this helps.

Take care and GOD bless....

Hi E.,

With all that you have going on, I can see how this might be a stressful time for you. Let's see if we can break this down into separate categories and possibly find a solution to them. I'm probably going to give you far more information than you need, but just take what you want and leave the rest! :-)

Let's first address your Lupus & Fibromyalgia. What are these diseases caused by? Did you know that we as humans don't acutally age, we don't get sick and we don't get diseases - our cells do. Our body's health is dependent on our cells' health. So to limit sickness and prevent disease we must protect and properly feed our cells. If you were to put buttermilk in your car's gas tank - it would get a "disease" and stop working. How do cells age, get sick and get diseases? Atoms missing an electron are not jut bad -they actually destroy surrounding atoms by stealing their electrons. An atom missing an electron is called a Free Radical. Free Radicals destroy cells. Cells that die, and cells that replicate in a damaged state are the cause or contribute to premature aging, sicknesses and diseases such as cancer, heart disease, lupus, fibromyalgia, diabetes and many others. Where do these Free Radicals come from? Smoking, STRESS, pollution, foods, MEDICATIONS, and many more. According to The American Medical Association, "Insufficient vitamin intake is apparently a cause of chronic diseases...Most people do not consume an optimal amount of all vitamins by diet alone. Pending strong evidence of effectiveness from randomized trials, it appears prudent for all adults to take vitamin supplements." Ok, I won't belabor this scientific fact, but maybe now you may have a true understanding about what's happening inside your body and how to protect your cells.

Moving on...Congratulations on your business! Hiccups are expected in any business venture, but it sounds like you're on your way!

How to deal with stress? There isn't one particular way to deal with stress, but I will say that it certainly requires balance and having the right attitude! What do I mean by that? Stress is a fact of life, but it doesn't have to be a WAY of life. Change is constantly swirling around us-at work, at home and in society. In short, life is chaotic and lived at laser-track speed. Life is really not about reality. It's about our perception of what is happening around us and to us, what we say to ourselves about it and how we feel about it. That's the beauty of the human brain -we have choices. We have options in terms of how we behave, respond, think or change in the face of the stresses in our lives. Most of us are lacking in energy and vitality, feeling overwhelmed and constantly exhausted, and having massive sense-of-humor failures. It's called "burnout." The best way to avoid burnout is to have a balanced lifestyle - exercise regularly, eat well, sleep at least seven hours a night, laugh a lot, relax, see friends, enjoy work, have regular holidays, be grateful and have great supporting relationships.

Balance and health is all about connection. Be connected to your heart's desires...and then make them happen. It's your choice. You CAN do it! Go for it!

Wishing you an abundance of good health and happiness and much success with your business!

God Bless,
D.

Hi E.,
I am feeling you on the flare ups. I have Fibro and recently was diagnosed with Graves Disease. One thing I have found that really helps me now when my stress and pain levels are up is to put on my MP3 player and play music that gets me feeling upbeat. I think it sort of forces my brain to focus on something other than pain and stress. Funny thing is when my husband bought that MP3 player for me I complained that it was too much money and I wouldn't get enough use out of it to make it worth the cash. Boy was I ever wrong! :P I hope you feel better soon and your business hits the ground running! Good luck!!
