Hi there-

My son is 3 years old and pretty little in the waist. As of this summer, he was still wearing some of his 18-month shorts, which was fine as we didn't need to worry about length. Now that it is fall and he is wearing pants, we are having a problem. His 2T pants fit okay in the waist but are too short in length and 3T's are too big on him. He is potty trained but can't manage a belt by himself (he attends daycare). Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to get pants that fit in the waist and length? Are there any stores that sell 3T slim? Are there belts out there that are easy for 3 year olds to manage on their own?

Any suggestions or advice is appreciated. Thanks!
N.

So What Happened?

Hi Everyone-

Just wanted to give you an update on my responses. Apparently, several stores sell the adjustable waist pants- like maternity pants. These stores include: Baby Style (very nice but very expensive), Gap, Old Navy, Children's Place and Target. I am going tomorrow- thanks to all for your advice!

I have had the same problem since my son was born. He has always been tall but extremely thin. I buy all adjustable waisted pants now. I usually buy them at the Gap or The Children's Place. I noticed that Target and Old Navy have started to sell them too. They are like maternity pants with the elastic and buttons on the inside that you can adjust to fit his waist. I hope this helps!

Try thrift stores. My daughter is the same way.. tall and skinny (she's 6) and we find many items that are almost new or even still have tags! in thrift stores that are $1-$5 each and have elastic or the adjustable waists.
We went to
Community Thrift Store
900 E Main St
East Dundee, IL 60118
Phone : ###-###-####

and got her 2 skirts (both Gap, one new with tags)
three pairs of pants
one pair jeans for me, new snowboots (with tags) and a wooden shelf
for under $35 for all of it.

Target usually is good about having slimmer pants too, and try finding elastic waists.

Good luck!
Amanda

Hi,

I had the same problem with my 3 year old and absolutly love Gymboree clothes. They have the elastic on the waist so you can adjust the waist size. They are a little on the pricey side but have great sales going on right now. For every $50 you spend, they give you $25 gymbucks to use at a future time.
Hope this helps!

I have a similar problem with my son. There are a few manufacturers who make adjustable waist pants with elastic and buttons on the inside. Osh Kosh, Childrens place are 2 that I have found them. JCPenneys also makes a tighter elastic pant like khaki material for little guys.

One idea instead of buying new expensive brands- is from what my sis-in-law said that Old navy or Gap had- a neat system in the waists of the children's clothes, where there is a button or clip sewn in on both sides of the waist of the pant, so you can button/unbutton or clip/unclip the sides of the waists when the kid needs a smaller/bigger size.

With belts-many adults can't even handle them properly, so I can't imagine a kid doing so..

I don't know about toddler boy sizes but Kohls also has the adjustable waistbands in the older girls clothes. I have the same problem with my 2 oldest daughters and the adjustable waistbands are awesome. Even slim pants are often too big for their skinny little waists. Boy, I could use a little bit of that problem for me,lol.

Hey N.,

We are in a similar situation. Our 15M old was wearing 6-9 month shorts for his small waist. Shorts are fine, but the 6-9M jeans are too short and he looks pretty silly. I know that Gap, Children's Place, and Levi's sell adjustable waist jeans. They are a little more pricey, but we found worth it. They are hard to find for anything UNDER 2T, but you should be ok.

Good luck.

I have the same problem with my son - he has a 12 month waist and a 3T length. I have found some "Adjustable" waist band pants that work really well. They have an elastic band with buttons to adjust as they grow. Some of the maternity pants have this feature. Check out www.childrenswearoutlet.com they have Levi Strauss adjustable waist pants for $10.00. I personally haven't purchased from them yet - but I do plan too in the very near future. Gymboree has Adjustable waist pants too - they are a little pricey - $30.00 or so. Check out Old Navy - I find their pants to fit the slimmer child. Good luck - I love the summers because of the shorts. J.

Hi N.,
I have a skinny son too and a while back I was looking on the internet for belts and I saw a sight where the belts looked like regular belts but they were velcro so they were really easy for a potty trained child to use. I am sorry that I don't remember the name of the website but if you google child belts or something like that you may beable to find them. They were also not very pricy maybe 7.99 I believe. It has been a while. Hope I helped. C.

Hi N.!

I have the same problem. My 3 year old is small in the waist too. I really just believe it's the sizing of the different brands. He has several size 2T pants that he had finally fit into, and been wearing that fit great. They fit in the waist and they were long enough. Now that the summer is over those pants are too short. Meanwhile he has some other 2T pants that were too big in the waist. Now they fit in the waist and are long enough. The 2T's that fit (waist & lengthwise) came from Sears. They are Canyon River Blues, Toughskins, and Winnie The Pooh brand(s).

I hope that helps some!
Lynn

There seem to be several of us with this problem!! I have found that Children's place and gymboree have the best prices for the adjustable waists. They start at 2T though (which is hard for me because my little guy needs like an 18 month length. He is potty trained and the waists are too big on him). I have also found that Carters SWEATPANTS run slim in the waist. Their other pants do not.
Oh, and on the pricier side (but find good sales) the Wes & Willie college wear windpants fit so nicely!!

Hi N.,

I have always used Babystyle.com to buy my son's clothing.
I had a 25 pound 5 month old who wore cloth diapers. Talk about trouble finding clothes that fit! Babystyle has the softest, most comfortable, cutest play clothes anywhere.
www.babystyle.com. You can also request a catalog. They let you earn free shipping, babystyle bucks, free gift wrapping, and $15 off your next order at every checkout. My son has fit in the same pants for almost 2 years!!!!
Enjoy!
