Help! Cloth Diapering Heavy Wetter

My little girl is 5 months old and we just started using bumGenius 4.0 cloth diapers a couple weeks ago. We absolutely love them, but just as we were having issues with leaking through disposables at night we are having the same issue with the cloth diapers. We've tried using two newborn inserts in addition to the one-size insert and she still leaks through. We are very lucky in that she has been sleeping through the night since 8 weeks old. Right now she goes to bed at 7:30 a.m. and has a small bottle at 10:00 and sleeps until about 8:00 a.m. We are stopping the 10:00 small feeding this week to see how she does. My husband refuses to try different things because he's all about every night getting her up at 10:30 (or before we go to bed) to change her. I'm concerned she will start to see this as a pattern and expect it. I would rather find something that works for heavy wetters - something that will absorb up to 12 hours. Any suggestions? Oh, one last thing...she's a tummy sleeper a majority of the time.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We tried the hemp inserts and they were actually worse than using the newborn inserts in addition to the one size inserts. We finally found Huggies Overnites in size 3 and so far they are working great! Anything is better than having to change all her bedding daily so I'm good with even getting a couple days of picking her up dry in the morning. Thank you all for your suggestions and tips!

HEMP!!! I had a horribly heavy wetter and I asked and people told me to use hemp inserts. There hasn't been any leaky diapers since!

What about trying another insert. If the newborn aren't working, go up one size. what kind of inserts are you using. Maybe try wool inserts. wool is VERY absorbant. So if you went with say 2 wool inserts you might not have the problem at all.

I know what you mean about not having her get into the habit of being changed at night, but if you didn't she would be that much wetter in the morning.

You could try making your own inserts and adding extra in the front area where she is leaking the worst.

For my son, i don't double him up yet. But i am going to start. he is starting to leak through by morning. I don't change him at night, since he sleeps so good. i did think about that, but am going to try doubleing him up first.

Hi -

We use the same diaper and put in the one microfiber insert and then an additional hemp insert. (Swaddlebees, etc. You can get them at Gillians Drawers.com) You put the microfiber closest to the baby for quick absorption and then the hemp one for mega absorption. So far, this is working for us.

Its tough with girl tummy sleepers. If you think about it... the pee just really doesn't have anywhere to go!

You may want to try a different kind of diaper just for overnight. I'm expecting my first baby in December but I'm planning to use cloth and have done lots of research. One site that I found VERY informative is: http://www.bynature.ca

Maybe using a fitted cloth diaper with a wool diaper cover? I've also heard a lot of good things about Thirsties diaper covers. And since you would only be using them for night time you would only need a few added to your stash to have in rotation. Really, I think this site was the most informative I've found to date so I'd encourage you to check it out.

I would second the idea of adding another insert. We use the microfiber, or synthetic chamois cloth. Make sure, though, if you use these, that they do not come into contact with the baby's skin directly--they are too drying when placed directly next to the skin.

You might also try a different fitting diaper--if she's laying on her stomach to sleep (and you should try to put her on her back, because of SIDS, if you can), and that is not how she is during the day, then it could be that it's causing enough of a slight change in the fit to allow the urine to escape. Try checking out www.myuseddiapers.com or www.diaperswappers.com if you want to try some other brands--you can buy there on these websites used in good condition. Also, some online stores will offer to a tryout-period on the diapers, because fit can vary between babies.

One mom I know did the only thing that worked--when the baby was really asleep, she'd change her baby right in the crib, right before the mom went to bed herself (around midnight). Not my favorite option, and not all kids sleep that soundly, but, it might be worth a shot.

All that being said, we finally went with disposables at night, for a slightly different reason.... my LO (age 22 months) will hold his pee until right after he goes to bed, and be in a wet diaper all night. In the morning, he'd his crotch area would be red from the urine, and he'd cry..... I tried several inserts & various options, and ended up going with a disposable, since it sucked the moisture away from skin more. Ironically, we've had more leaks with the disposables overnight than we ever did with the cloth.... If I could find a way to keep him dry at night, so his skin wasn't burned, I'd put him back in cloth at night!

Hemp or bamboo inserts are AWESOME! I very highly recommend trying out a Joey Bunz insert from Baby Kicks USA. They're really inexpensive, but the quality is AMAZING. Don't be fooled by how thin they are. Those things can soak up a lake! I put one in a Fuzzi Bunz at night (with the Fuzzi Bunz insert) and I've never had a leak. The Joey Bunz work in just about any type of diaper too. I'd also recommend trying a Bumboo pocket.

If you're stuffing too much, you might get a problem with gaping at the legs. That will cause leaks. You just can't get a good fit with ton of fluffy inserts in. At least, I never could.

I'm just wondering, are you changing her before the 10:00 feeding? Some moms never change them during the night even if they feed them again during the night. I always changed mine every time I got up to feed them. We never had problems with leaking out of the diaper until they were almost 2 years old. I used thick heavy prefolds and a diaper cover with an additional insert at night with my 2 son and I used Kushies all-in-ones with an additional insert at night with my daughter. I did not cloth diaper my first son.

I used to double diaper then wrap my babies bottoms in a thick receiving blanket and put a mattress pad on top of the sheet. I'm sure they have come up with something better by now. Its great that shes sleeping so well though!!
