Help Can't Decide Between Radian R120 or the Britax Frontier 85 - Redlands,CA

I need another carseat for my husbands car so he can drop off my soon to be 5 yr old for preschool, and I just cant decide what to buy.

We currently have two Radians in our mini-van I love how trim they are, and my kids love them. My youngest is still in his baby carrier and is really small for his age at 5 months only 12.5 lbs. When I'm ready to move him to a convertible he'll be using the seat that was previously in my hubby's car that my two older boys can no longer use (max weight was 40lbs).

My 4.9 yr old and 3 yr old are basically the same height and weight. Both have one more harness slot to spare on their Radians and are 41lbs, so obviously they will outgrow the shell of the seat before the weight so I'm thinking the weight stats are pretty much obsolete at this point right?

I'm trying to decide between another Radian or the britax frontier for my husbands car. He has a 4 door Honda civic (2004) so space is an issue, and I had envisioned at one point 3 radians across the back (which is one reason I invested in them in the first place) but the reality is they are way too heavy to move around and haven't seen the inside of my hubby's car once...but I guess there may be a point we'd want to take all 3 boys in his car. So with that said...

I'm leaning towards the Frontier simply because it apparently has the highest harness slots and shell. Only thing that's holding me back is everyone states they're huge, especially compared to the radian. Can anyone give me more feedback on that assessment. I also like the idea of being able to adjust the harness straps without having to take the seat out and re thread the harnesses. Generally the hubby only takes one kid when using his car....so adjusting the harness straps may be an issue in the future!

Can anyone give me their opinions pros or cons of either....price isn't much of an issue at this point, and the expiration dates between the 2 are only a yr apart so not too much of a difference. My main goal is to keep all harnessed as long as possible! Should I go with what we already know, or find something that might last longer and make things slightly easier?

Thoughts....

What can I do next?

I have a Britax Frontier 85, with the side impact protection. LOVE IT!!!! It is a space hog, though. If you are only going to have one or two car seats in your husband's car, then I say get it. If you really might have three, then don't even think about it. There is no fitting 3 of anything with one Britax Frontier in there. If space isn't any issue though I would choose the Britax Frontier 85 every time. :) It is big and a bit heavy, but it is a wonderful seat. My daughter is 3.5 and very tall for her age and I have no fear of her outgrowing anytime soon.

We have the Frontier 85 and love it! Straps never get twisted, it's super easy to snap, easy to install and it's pretty light to transfer if needed. It is wider than the Radian and I don't think that 3 would fit across, but 2 would. You MIGHT be able to squeeze 3 in, but it would be super tight!

We have 6 Britax car seats (3 in each car). I love them, but I've never been concerned about space (I have a 7 passenger SUV & hubby has full-size truck). I think they both have good ratings.

We have the 2005 Civic and nothing fits 3 across. I have not heard 3 Radians even do, at least not confirmed it. I did have the Frontier85 in this car, and I liked it just fine. It does recline back a bit due to the angle of the Civic itself, and you can't just adjust the harness slots once it's installed. You need to go behind to do that, so that would mean uninstalling the seat, more or less. So don't look at that easy adjust as a huge feature. It just means you don't have to re-thread. (I know, I was hoping for an easy feature there, too).

I don't think weight will matter, as they will outgrow by height, most likely. You might consider too if you get a good install.

Honda does not allow using Latch beyond 40 lbs, so you'll have to do seatbelt install in the Civic after 40 lbs. Make sure you get a good install. And the new Super Latch feature would not apply to your 2004, so please don't use latch on this seat.

But as long as the straps are ABOVE the shoulders for forward-facing, any kids can use it who meets the seat requirements. For example, my 4 and 6-year-old can use the same seat without any harness slot adjustments.

We too want to harness as long as possible. My kids are all in Radians and the oldest is 6. I probably should have gotten the Frontier85 for longevity. I want to harness until 8. But at the time we needed 3 across a Malibu. So yes, the Frontier is big, but if you do 2 in a row it doesn't really matter. I would get the SICT version with the enhanced side-impact protection, too. Again, 2 in a row anything fits.

The Radian has the Safe-stop feature. So I found it an awkward seat if you have a kid under 40 lbs (requires Safe-stop) and one over 40 lbs. (you need to unhook it), both using the same seat.

Again, I think it comes down to fit in the vehicle. I actually want to get a Frontier85SICT for my 6-year-old soon. Britax is getting rid of harmful flame retardants by the end of 2012 too, they claim. But the Radian seats have always tested well for toxins, so no major worries anyway.

Could *try* the Frontier from a store with a great return policy and see how it fits. It is a great seat (my 6 y.o. still happily harnessed at 52#), but it is huge and heavy and awkward to move. If it doesn't fit, go with the Radian. So far my favorite seats have all been Britax, but if they don't fit, they don't work!

And on the Frontier, you can adjust the harness strap height without re-threading the straps, but you do have to remove the seat to do it.
