Hi Moms! I am hoping some of you who have been there can help me out. I am 33 weeks pregnant or so, and my baby is breech and I REALLY don't want to have a c-section for various reasons. Have any of you had luck in helping your baby turn down? What did you do? Does anyone know of a Dr. or midwife in the Austin area who is experienced in delivering breech babies? And have you delivered a breech baby and what was it like? Thanks you so much for your help!!

What can I do next?

Our daughter was 3 weeks early and 4 days before that my Doctor told me the baby was breech. The doctor told me not to worry the baby would probably turn on her own by the time I went into labor.

Sure enough, we were so shocked that I went into labor, when they checked me, they said, everything looks perfect. The baby was positioned perfectly.

My second was breech until about 32 weeks. I did a lot of swimming, which was recommended by my midwife (less gravity makes it easier for baby to move around in a tight space), and visualization. I would focus on the baby and tell her that if she was safe that it was time for her to turn, and then I would see it happen in my mind.

I've also heard great things about acupuncture for turning babies. That was my next step if she hadn't turned.

Most all of the midwives I know deliver breech babies. If you need a recommendation let me know.

I undertand your situation exactly. I was pregnant with twins, with one breech. The liklihood of her turning was almost nil -- yet she did! So, don't give up hope. BUT.... guess what, she turned again, and was born breech. As far as I can tell the Dr did a great job (this was in MN) and it all worked out.

BUT, before she turned, I was in your same position trying to figure out what to do, and I came to the conclusion that if a C-Section was safest, that was the way to go. I wanted to avoid it for ME, but I had to put the needs of my babies first. I talked with one Dr about breech delivery and he told me that Drs in America these days have so little experience with breech births, and pointed out that I might not want to be someone's learning experience.

So, that's my 2 (2000?) cents. I completely understand your position. I would just urge you to make your decisions based first and foremost on the baby. And stay positive -- your baby might turn!!!

I had a similar situation with my pregnancy and while I very much so wanted to avoid a c-section, I realized in the end I needed to do what was best for our baby. They say a baby can still flip up until 35-36 weeks, and you will really feel it when he/she does.

I tried a number of things which could potentially get him to flip. My OB recommended trying some incense - moxibustion sticks - which you can get at Turtle Dragon on Guadalpe near 33rd Street. There are some Yoga positions you can try and also some accupuncture (just the pins - no other remedies). I also tried doing handstands and flips in the pool (I delivered in the summer).

My OB did warn me not to let any other practitioner try to flip the baby because concerns for the baby's health. There may be some reason why he or she is breech - such as placement of the umbilical cord. While it may have worked for some, you never know if it is dangerous for your baby. We tried to do an external version (in the hospital) and the baby's heartbeat dropped very quickly. Thankfully I was fully monitored and they were able to get his heart rate back up. So you need to be very careful what people try to talk you into.

Best of luck to you!
