Please help before we go insane!!! My 9 year old ADHD daughter is loud and does not stop talking (she talks very loud) and she fly's off the handle at the slightest offense! I understand why she is the way she is, I know it is the ADHD. But, how do I stop the constant noise that is affecting other members of the family. I do not want to break her spirit, but I feel like we are always telling her to "quiet down". She is so sweet but at the same time she drives us away with her constant noise! She is not being bad or misbehaving, she is just being annoying and I can't hear myself think....ever!

We are not against meds, but she has a mild heart condition so it is not the best option for her right now.

Looking forward to all your wise and creative answers!!!

What can I do next?

I have ADHD girls and I have a loud girl -- fortunately (for me!), they're not loud *and* ADHD. That must be a tough combination!

Have you had her hearing checked? And does she have allergies? I find my loud girl to be MUCH worse when her allergies are acting up. It seems her head gets stuffy & she doesn't hear as well, consequently she gets even louder. A few days of Claritin or Zyrtec, combined with a lot of liquids and constant nose-blowing and it seems to help.

Might want to have her hearing checked. Won't help the ADHD, but it might at least keep things down to a dull roar!

Good luck!

My ADD daughter uses Clonidine for falling asleep. It is used off-label for that since it really is a heart medication. I hear it is used for ADHD during the daytime to calm hyper kids down. Might be the ideal med for her. For my daughter who is dreamy & inattentive and not hyper at all it does not help with focus, just with her churning mind at night to allow her to fall alseep. PS: it is also very affordable, we get the generic version mail order which my insurance will send me 90 tables for $5.

I intentionally did 2 things to help deal with the noise of having an adhd kiddo:

- Intentionally got him hooked on computer / video games ((Most of the peace came from knowing his bum was safely glued to a chair... people without go-go-go kids might be horrified, but my GOD, and hour of PEACE))

- Got him involved in music (music not ONLY turns into background noise about 1000x easier than the 'herd of buffalos', but also comes along with 2 wonderful things known as diaphragm control and pianissimo)

I ALSO got my husband drummer's earplugs (we'd had them for kiddo for ages). Drummers earplugs (specifically the white conical ones, not the orange beasts) cut out high/low/"sharp" sounds. One can still hear EVERYTHING in crystal clarity, it's literally like turning down the volume on life. Most of the time I work with my son on noise issues, but if it's a time he CAN be noisy, the earplugs keep everyone else from losing it.

My son (age 14, has ADHD too) and I have been diagnosed with it too. We are new at trying DMG....a friend suggested I get that for him.

here's a link to read more about it:
http://www.dmgdoctor.com/testimonials/index.php oh and you can find it at your local herbal store or apothecary, possibly. I found it at my local apothecary for about $15.

I don't have kids with ADHD, but I have experienced being around kids who are. I don't know if it will help you or not, but have you tried giving her more opportunities to be loud? So that you are helping her be conscious of volume? Take her outside to play for half an hour, and during that half hour encourage her to be as loud as she can/wants to be. Then go inside and encourage quieter activity. Do this daily or more, if you can. So that rather than being "corrected" for being loud, she is being instructed in the proper volume for the different locations/activities.
?

Just a thought... I haven't tried it...

Watch her diet. A lot of ADD/ADHD kids can't have anything with MSG. MSG can make them violent and act out, the loud constant talking can be a sign that she is reacting to something in her diet. She could also be reacting to dairy products and/or gluten. Look up some diet ideas online and talk to someone who works in a health food store or a doctor of holistic medicine. There are lots of natural remedies available but you have to look for them.
