Help, 9Mo Old Son Grinding His Teeth

I have a 9 mo old son who just started grinding his teeth. I think he likes the noise it makes but this can't be good for his teeth, and the sound gives me the shivers! I know these are only milk teeth but I don't want it to become a nervous habit! Has anyone experienced this and any suggestions? I have been giving him cheerios every time he starts and that tends to distract him enough but am looking for other suggestions!

What can I do next?

My son did it too as his teeth came in its perfectly normal. He grinded on his pacifier too. But he soon grew out of it there is nothing to worry about it should stop in a few weeks.

Hey K.
My daughter who is nine months as well just started grinding again TODAY! I stick my finger inbetween her teeth and nicely say "no grinding." Seems to work for a couple of minutes.

Hi K.! My names R. & I'm new here. I had to respond back. I have a 10 month old who started the same bad habit last month. I don't know myself how to get him out of it. When I ask people they say he will grow out of it or I will have to get some kind of mold thing from the dentist to help him stop. I wish i could help you but i'm in the same boat. It goes right through me also. Good luck!

Hi K.,

My 9 mo old son does the same thing. We just saw his doctor for his check up and he said it's normal. It's just a new thing he's learned and that it may even be a way to comfort himself. I know, the noise drives me crazy too. Don't worry, he'll move onto something new soon:)

Hey K.,
I know exactly what you are going through. My son who is now 16 months old did this exact same thing at your son's age. After speaking with his doctors who said he would grow out of it I thought there was nothing to do but wait it out. It drove me crazy. Needless to say he is now fine and does not do this anymore. My daughter did the same thing when she was a baby, she is now 10 years old. I agree with you they like the sound and the more you tell them to stop they think it is funny believe it or not. He will stop eventually. Good luck during the mean time.
Sincerely, I. G.

I started grinding my teeth when I was about 1. I did it as a nervous habits and even did it in my sleep. My kindergarten picture my teeth were ground down just above the gum line. I stopped as soon as I started losing baby teeth. He may also be doing it because he is teething and the pressure my give him some relief from discomfort. I think distracting is really the best idea and I would not worry until he get in his adult teeth.

is he teething? It might feel good on his gums esp since hte cheerios are helping. Maybe give him something else he can chew on like a cold washcloth or a piece of celery or something frozen. Something else that might help his need to chomp on something. I feel your pain though I HATE that sound too!

Mine did that too as he'd get new teeth - just exploring a new sensation. It drove me crazy though too. I would pat his mouth with a flat hand just enough to get his attention and he'd stop. It was just a gentle pat and I never acted angry or anything. I'd just say "no biting" in a soft voice and pat his mouth. It seemed to work and pretty quickly. Hope you find a solution.

My daughter used to do the same thing when she first starting getting her teeth. My doctor told me it's normal. They are just discovering their teeth. No long term damage will happen. She stopped doing it after a few weeks. Once she got used to having teeth.
