My baby girl just had her first birthday almost 2 weeks ago. Our pediatrician told us she needs to be drinking whole milk now, instead of formula. I've tried countless times to give her milk, and she just spits it out. She spits it even if I put some chocolate or strawberry mix in it. I'm worried she's not getting enough calcium in her diet. She won't eat a lot of things that are good for her. She's still eating some baby foods, but she only has a taste for the sweet ones. Any suggestions?

Dice up some apples, bananas, pineapples, oranges, kiwi's, strawberry's, watermelon, and cantaloupe. On 1 plate put the aplples & bananas and a spoonful of peanut butter. On another plate place fruit in a circle and put whipped cream in the middle. Let her see you eating it but do not offer her any. Let her come to you. (I myself have told my son no you can't have any of something he will not eat, and just because I said no he will eat it.) She will probly want to start out by playing in it and that's fine. Once she's done playing she will most likely be eating it.

It's not the milk per se that she needs, it's the calcium. Milk just happens to be one of the best sources of it. If she's eating cereal such as oatmeal, try substituting milk for water when you make it. Also, try her on yogurt. My daughter didn't care much for cow's milk when she was little, but she loved yogurt. Don't get the pre-mixed, flavored stuff - it's loaded with sugar. And if it's labeled sugar-free, it's sweetened with aspartame, which AFIC, is poison. Get plain, unflavored yogurt, and add fresh fruit (not canned - that's also loaded with extra sugar) to it. If your daughter can't handle fruit chopped in small pieces, run the fruit through the blender first. Don't add Quik or similar stuff to her milk - all you're doing is getting her started on a lifetime addiction to refined sugar.

hey B.,

i had the same problem with my son. i was told to put half milk and half formula in his cup and then gradually put more milk til he was drinking all milk. Maybe you can try that. as far as only liking sweet foods, my son likes the frozen vegetables by birds eye. they are really soft and they come seasoned( i get asian medley) and he eats them all the time.. also try those danimals yogurt drinks, they seem to be a hit in my house... hope this helps.

have you tried giving it to her in a sippy cup? That might help...just keep trying. She'll get used to it after a little while. In the mean time keep giving her the formula especially since she isn't wanting to eat.

My little girl only liked the sweet baby food too lol I started blending our dinner (with minimal seasioning) for her and she started to love this. My girl is 13 months old and now has no problem eating.

Just try different things, you'll find where some things may work for others but not you then you'll strike gold with others :)

Have you talked to your pediatrician about other options besides just whole milk. I babysit at home and the three little ones that I take care of had issues with cows milk. I have one who is around 1 1/2 years old. She is still on formula, she takes Similic Go and Grow it is for children up to 24 months. I also have one on soy milk. And then we will reintroduced cows milk at 2. I have also had one child that was on goat's milk. She would have a hard time digesting cows milk so she was on goat's milk. I hope this will help.

Have you tried other calcium sources like yogurt or cheese? YO Baby Organic Yogurt is an excellent source of calcium and now they even make it with DHA, which is good for brain & eye development. Health Food Stores even sell cookies with calcuim. My son is the same way, but I don't worry about it. Only Humans offer thier babies milk after being weened. In nature animals quit drinking milk from mom and go straight to food. Hope this helps you.

Part of what children need is milkfat until the age of 5. Milkfat aids in brain development. Whenever I switched my girls over I substituted 1-2 oz of formula in an 8 ounce bottle with milk. This helped ease the transition for both their digestive system and their taste buds.

Did you try warming it? My son is 21 months and he still likes his milk warm. It took me awhile to figure it out, because he too spit out his milk or just refused to drink it. Until you figure out how to get her to drink milk let her drink the stage 2 formulas. Many different brands sell formula for children 9-24 months, like Enfamil Next Step. Good Luck!

Hi! Neither one of my children drink milk. The pediatrician was not over concerned with it. I do give them yogurt, yogurt drinks and cheese to try and give them calcium. One of my children tends to be a picky eater. Try not to worry they eat when they get hungry.

Have your tried any of the other types of milk like 2%. My sons didnt like whole milk but didnt/dont have a problem with 2%. Maybe try changing what type of mix you are using. If she still doesnt want it back off for a bit and see if she will eat more items that have calcium like cheese and so on.
Another idea is let her pick her cup maybe even go to the store and show her various ones to get her to pick on. I know she is young but worth a shot to try.

Hi B.,

With a past daycare child her Mom had the same problem. I suggested she start watering down the formula (like only 3 scoops for 8 oz for 1 day, then 2 scoops for 1 day) etc until it seemed too weak for her little boy, then she put whole milk 4 oz with 4 oz water then worked it up. So it went really weak for him then stronger and this worked for him. Just an idea.

Good luck and God bless,
D.

When my son was that age, we mixed his milk with formula for a bit to ease the transition. He had no problem going over after that & it didn't take long. He also had a pretty good appetite for yogurt, cheese, etc. But I do agree with the earlier post that you shouldn't put chocolate or strawberry in the milk...that sugar is really not good for her. We would mix my son's fruits with cereal to make sure he was getting what he needed. We introduced vegetables first to my son & that's all he ate for a few months before we introduced fruit. They all like junk more than anything else if give the choice, so it's up to you to make that choice between healthy, good things. Don't offer/make available the sugars & they'll fall into the habbit of eating the right stuff.

Hi B.,

My son is 2 and a half and he has never liked milk. But he does like yogurt, pudding and cheese. Plus I give him a vitamin/mineral supplement daily. Also, some juices are now fortified with calcium. My son is very healthy and growing normally. Hope this helps!

maybe you can try 1/2 formula, 1/2 whole milk until she gets used to it. none of my kids ever noticed a difference when we switched to milk, but i'd try that and slowly get her to whole milk. good luck!

Wow! You have gottena lot of great advice. I also did the mix 1/2 and 1/2 with no problem. My brother in law on the other hand has a very picky eater for a son. they give him Pedisure ( it's like the ensure shakes, but for kids) and their son will drink that even though he won't drink milk. The other thing I wanted to tell you was that I read somewhere that it can take up to 10 tries before a child will accept a new taste of texture so don't be discouraged and keep trying!!

Did you try half and half (half milk and half formula)? That might help her get used to the taste on a gradual basis. If she eats cheese or yogurt don't worry about her calcium intake, she can get all her requirements from those. HTH!

Since she turned one only 2 weeks ago I dont think it would be a big deal if half her bottles during the day had formula and the other half you tried whole milk. This way it will be like you are weaning her off the formula instead of cold turkey just because she had a birthday. How is she doing with breaking away from her bottles? As far as the foods go, as long as you keep trying the same foods they say it may take up to 10 times until they get used the taste and start to like a food. Keep up the good work though! ps they have alot of calcium rich baby snacks now that she may enjoy too.
