I am lactose intolerant. I made a BIG mistake this morning. I was craving cereal with milk, and i ate some. Oh lord. Now my tummy is not liking me so much. I never get to eat cereal with real milk because it makes my stomach upset.
What can i substitute for milk? I have tried soy and i hate it! Makes me gag! Anything else out there?
Thanks a bunch!

So What Happened?

@ JoAnn from Beaver Crossing.... OMG! Thank you so much for adding that website! I was able to locate a farm here that is about 15 min from where I live! All farm raised animals. All grass fed, no cages, no steriods, no pesticides! All natural!
I have a three year old special needs girl that is very sensitive to a lot of the food we eat now. Thank goodness she does not have to be gluten free diet, i bet just making a huge improvement in our food consumption would make a world of difference!
Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lactose-free milk (such as Lact-aid or other brands), rice milk, etc. Buy a small container and see if you like it. If you don't like it plain (to drink or on cereal), cook with it so you won't waste it. You can also get rid of lactose intolerance through proper nutritional supplementation - my family did.

Rice Milk :) That is what my daughter drinks who is allergic to milk. Or if it truly is just a lactose intolerance, I believe they sell Lactaid milk (which tastes like regular milk but has the enzyme broken down already). Good luck! Daughter always hated soy too :)

There is Lactose-free milk available. Also, I know there is medication (Lactaid, Surelac) you can take before consuming milk products that will fend off a reaction.

Many lactose intolerant people can drink raw milk with no problem. The enzymes in raw (unpasturized) milk are intact, much different from the milk you get in stores. Since you live here in NE you should be able to find reliable sources for raw milk fairly easily.
Just make sure the cow is grass fed, not corn fed. Corn fed cow's milk must be pasturized or it will make you sick, however grass fed cow's milk is one of God's perfect foods and doesn't need to be pasturized.

Have you tried raw milk? When I moved out of my parents house at 18 I was used to drinking a 1/2 gal+ milk per day from our farm. Try that with store bought milk, and I had constant sharp ache in my stomach- whether I drank a little or alot. With raw milk- again now, not a problem! Might be worth a try-

Lactaid

I used it when my son was lactose intolerand and I was breast feeding. The smell is a little hard to get used to it smells like milk on the farm, but tastes sweet. Like the milk after you have eaten all of the cereal "Kix" so i liked it and so did my son.

There are pills you can take too. talk to you doctor.

I use the Lactaid (or generic lactase enzyme) pills and then can drink regular milk or eat dairy. I use them all the time (i love cheese) and it's benign enough that you can take as many as you need throughout the day -- it's just the enzyme that your body doesn't make on its own to digest dairy. You can buy the tablets in the grocery store or pharmacy - next to the antacids.

You know what I discovered? I figured out that I can drink fat free milk.. I still get rumbly, but not down and dirty ill.. I do not "treat" myself every week, but when I do I have a small bowl of cereal or a small glass of Fat free milk with ice, for a side with a cookie or a piece of pie..

My husband will even make me a White Russian with fat free milk every once in a while.. ..

I second the almond milk recommendation. You can get it sweetened or unsweetened, with vanilla flavor or without. It doesn't add much nutrition, but I think it's more like real milk than soy or rice milk.

I like Ice Cream of almost any flavor but now prefer to eat Sherberts that seems to be more tolerable. Toffuti is non-lactose branded "ice cream".
In terms of Milk, depending on the severity of the intolerance if light could try goat milk as it is more natural and has less lactose in it I have heard.

Also Cheddar Cheese may have less lactose also, as does farmers cheese.
Here is a list claimed of Lactose Free foods:

Note the Comment on the Very bottom with No Milk but Water.

Tough is eating out at an Italian Restaurant! Stick with
Spaghetti and meatballs, Veal (not the parmiagna type)
We sometimes make special Pizza with no cheese on it and instead sometimes can find Lactose Free cheese to sprinkle on it instead.
Have ordered Pizza with light or no cheese even at times or pull most of it off! It is simply amazing that Domino's Pizza does not have pizza for lactose intolerant folks and there are many!
In terms of SOY milk try Silky Soy milk and there are two to three different flavorings. The plain one I would spit out, but the others are actually nice to drink!

Greek yogurt with active enzymes could help reintroduce lactobacillus to your digestive tract as could refrigerated high potency lactose intolerant type pills. Often the reason is Antbiotics for other illnesses secondarily kills off the Good Bacteria like lactobacillus. I drink a little milk but have to watch everyday what other lactose sources are lurking! Example Milk Chocolate Bars, Even Medicines have lactose added to them as a filler! :-( Keep stocked besides Lactaid pills, Gax X and keep backups too it helps to break up the big bubbles that cause the pain into small ones that can be handled better using Simethicone. I have also purchased Lactaid Milk and there is even Lactaid ice cream but to me is kind of pricey, so Gas Ex is a good help also. One Cereal or more that Don't have to have milk in it Hot Oatmeal cereal made with water. Could add a little milk if needed.

I know just what you mean, I have a child that loves cereal and we have many varieties of it. Sometimes I have put cereal mixed with water, but could also try eating it with Kefir yogurt as it still has lactobacillus. That is how, I discovered when met spouse at a resort in British Columbia, Europeans eat much of their cereals! With Yogurt and kills two birds with one stone! Getting both lactobacillus and cereal at the same time just make sure it is Active yogurt which is labeled on the yogurt now! I have been dealing with this for about 40 Years!
