Is it normal for a 3 month almost 4 month old baby to be teething. I couldnt figure out why today he would do nothing but scream, chew on anything he could fit in his mouth. Then I got to looking in his mouth and he is cutting his first tooth on the bottom. My other two cut thier first when they were 5-6 months of age. I've been told that, that is even early. But I never thought my baby would start cutting teeth at 3 months. Plus he is running a temp, was 101, is that normal, my other two never did.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I ended up having to take my son to his doctor today (6-4) for his teething. I noticed he was bleeding from his bottom gum, where the teeth are coming in at, I dont recall that with my other two kids. Plus he was running a temp of 103.4, I gave him tyenol right away for that, and it did come down. His doctor said its all normal and nothing to worry about, I guess when a baby teeths, alot of them bleed, but its never noticed becuase its so little. He just started teething a couple days ago, and his two bottom teeth are already out of the gum. And the doctor said thats why there was so much blood in one shot, and the high temp.

My first baby got his first tooth through at 4 months. I guess I thought that was a little early, but since he was my first, I had no idea. Then I saw 1 yr olds with two lower teeth that my son had had at 6 months. So strange!

My son is three months and has been teething for over a month. The teeth have broken the skin but just can't seem to finish the job. My dr said it was early, but not unusual. We're supposed to call if his fever gets higher than 100*, but it's normal for them to run a low grade fever. You might want to check with your dr because there are some limitations on teething medicine for such young babies.

It's perfectly normal. Even if they don't actually cut through the gums, the discomfort can certainly still be there. Something that we found that helped tremendously was Highland's Teething Tablets. They are homeopathic and I would dissolve them in a teaspoon of breastmilk before giving them to my children. They worked best with my daughter, but they did still help with my son. A slight temp also accompanied teething for my son at times. The baby orajel cotton swabs were also nice to have on hand when we were out. You break the tip at one end and let the liquid fill the swab at the other. You then rub it on your baby's gums. The massaging along with the medicine would help, and then if I'd give them a toy to rub their gums on, that would REALLY help.

Good luck!

Perfectly normal to get teeth early. It may be rare, but not unheard of. As far as the temperature goes, talk to your pediatrician. My son is getting 6 teeth at the same time right now and had a slight fever and my pediatrician said that a SLIGHTLY elevated temp is normal for teething, but not a fever. He was fussy but we thought it was just the teeth. It turns out he had an ear infection. Since the teeth and ears are connected, you might have your doctor check to make sure there's nothing more than just teeth. My son wasn't tugging at his ears or anything, so I never even thought of it.

Sadly, yes. My daughter got her first ones just before she turned 4 months too. The second a couple of weeks after that and now she has 4 at 8 months. It was a bit of a surprise but it's not out of the ordinary.
The temp is a concern though. I don't think it necessarily has anything to do with the teething. I'd probably give your doctor a call about that.

Dear B.,
Believe it or not some babies are even born with teeth!!! Crazy ;0)

My now 13 year old got his first tooth at barely 3 mo., and although that was "early" it isn't abnormal. The rest of my kids got theirs at 4-6 mo. Now the fever I would watch, carefully. Take care, G

I wouldn't be too concerned about the fever. I talked to my pediatrician when my children were teething and she said it is normal for some babies to have a low-grade fever.

B.,

I get emails from BabyCenter/ParentCenter weekly about my children ages 7 and 2 months. I got one YESTERDAY about my 2 month old starting teething!!!! Now I know these are "age appropriate" but not all babies will teethe at the same time... and mine isn't hallelujah! But I"d say since yours is older, it is probably normal. Call your pediatrician though. Sorry he is teething! I remember from my first that it is no fun. I used the teething tablets with my oldest. We'll see what I do for my second. It could be different!

Good luck!

I had two kids who had teeth before they were 4 months old. Nursing is only hard once the top teeth come in, but it's not bad once you build up the new callouses. I've nursed a year with 3 kids with teeth at 4 and 5 months. Sorry it's so young. I hope they come in quickly so you don't have misery for long!

Hi B.,

You know the old adage, every baby/child is different! My son had his first TWO teeth by the age of 4 months, my daughter never cut her first one until she was 9 months. I wouldn't worry about it, but if it gives you peace of mind, have a pediatric dentist take a look. Good luck!!

My oldest child cut her first teeth at 4 1/2 months, so it is definitely something that happens. A temperature like that during teething is common too. My 1st child didn't get fevers during teething, but my other 3 have and still do.

I use Hyland's teething tablets, wet/cold washclothes and sometimes infant tylenol (for the fever) during teething. Hope that helps.

Have a GREAT rest of the week!

It all sounds pretty normal to me. 4 months is really young but not unheard of. My mom says that I got both my bottom teeth at 4 months. The 101 temp may be a little high, but all kids are different. Good luck to you! Breastfeeding will be a challenge, is you are.

All I can tell you is that my daughter got her first tooth at 3 months as well and she has done just fine. She was a little fussy when it came in and did love chewing on stuff (especially mommy & daddy's fingers) but it really wasn't too bad. She has stayed ahead of the game, she is now 11 months and has 4 molars poking through! I would just call your doctor to see about pain relievers and orajel options to help deal with the pain. I know this isn't the most helpful post but at least you know you're not alone...we call my daughter Lucy Toothy!
