Help 11 Month Old Refuses to Wear a Diaper!

Moms, I am struggling with this... my 11 month old daughter has decided last week that she doesnt want to wear a diaper or pants anymore- she likes to be naked waist down (dresses are fine, but no pants, etc). She will fight my husband, her nanny and me if we try.. she will cry, turn and crawl/ walk away.. if left alone she is very happy. If we do manage to get the diaper on- then she is fine- but oh boy! is it hard!

I have checked for diaper rash, chapped skin etc, and shes fine...

Anyone has any suggestions of what might be the reason and what I could do?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank-you all Mommies :) I have implemented your suggested strategies and they seem to be working for the most part.... I try keeping he rnaked for as long as I can... have switched to using cloth diapers which she likes when at home... and when we need to go out, I make her wear her jacket and then change her diaper- so she knows she needs to wear one to go out :)...

Perhaps she wants to start using a potty. I'd get a small baby bjorn potty that she could sit on herself. Tell her that she has to wear diapers when you go out. But she can be diaper free at home/in her room/or a designated room in the house/or right after she goes in the potty or in her diaper.

Shes on the move and you dare to hold her for a minute to change her!! LOL You need to make changing more fun. Play peek-a-boo with a t-shirt, blow on her belly, make funny sounds, kiss her feet. At other times during the day lie her down and play also, so she gets used to being on her back to play. And be prepared for when she refuses to be held, carried, hugged or any thing else that stops her from doing what SHE wants. lol

Oh yeah- welcome to this fun stage! My son HATES to have his diaper changed. Once it's on, he's fine. But he kicks, rolls, screams, and smears diaper cream (and other much worse stuff!) all over the place!

I have no advice for you. (The best we can come up with is to give him a sippy cup, and then change the diaper super fast.) Sorry! I think it's just a part of these little ones learning to be independent.

What a pain, I know!

N., your daughter is showing the classic signs that she is ready to potty train, if I were you I would go with it.
My daughter did the same thing, we ended up potty training her (or shall I say she potty trained herself) and putting her in big girl pants. What we did was put the potty chair in the living room or hallway and let her use it whenever she needed to go. Every hour or so we would ask her if she needed to go potty and after a week or two she was completely potty trained, both day and night, though we did put a diaper on her at night for a few more weeks just to be safe. Also she was out of the crib by then. Because she was so young we put the mattress on the floor for a few months then put the bed frame together. Her bed was an antique and was high up off the floor compared to the ones they make now. I did the same thing with my boys.
Hugs,
T.

Here's and idea from another perspective. As long as you are home and she's wearing a dress, let her go with no diaper. Once she sees that you are not fighting her anymore the "Game" is over. She may be thinking of this as a game too. Good luck!

Have you tried putting a onesie on over the diaper?

NAKED IS FUN!!!! My daughters now 7yo and 2 1/2 yo (still in diapers) both went througha stage of the same thing only once I wrestled it on them they took ot off when I wasn't looking. I had to duck tape the tabs to keep them on. As for the wrestling match I just had to keep telling them they had to wear a diaper and always WIN! It is a stage and you all will get through it. Check to make sure it isn't too tight and the size is right but if she is fighting putting it on only it sounds like NAKED IS FUN!!! A.

What if you put a onesie on her (over her diaper)??? That way, she can't take the diaper off. I had to do this with my son at times.

Good morning!

As another mommy suggested, if you are OK with this, I would let her go bare at home. But explain to her (in whatever terms you think she can understand) that when you leave the house she MUST wear a diaper and pants. That's non-negotiable. Let her kick, scream, etc. Eventually she'll learn that Mommy really means it and (hopefully) will stop fighting you.

Who knows? Maybe if you put a little potty out you'll get the bonus of an early trainer out of the deal?

Good luck!

Do you have a wipe warmer ?
I was staying at my mom's for a couple of days and using normal wipes .. forget it that made my well behaved child roll and crawl and scream while getting her diaper changed... Once we got back home and back to her warm wipes, she was fine. Maybe she doesn't like the cold that she gets from getting her undressed. Try that, it might work. But every baby goes through a time when they will not stand still for a diaper change. Also try giving her a teething toy or something she can chew on. I give my daughter something to chew on and she stays still. Any toy she cant choke on is too small and squeeky or soft should be ok. Hope this helps!

My daughter did the EXACT same thing! She got over it. Simple as that. She just stopped. I think it only last a couple of months. Now, she is 2 and ready to potty train, and takes her diaper off constantly. But I remember when she was not even one and she threw a fit for me to get her diaper on. she would be squirming and kicking. I actually think that it may not be the diaper. They don't want to lay there while you do it.

Your daughter is NOT ready to potty train. You will give yourself a headache if you try to do that. Not going to work. You just have to deal with it. She doesn't want to lay there while you put her diaper on. So get it on as fast as possible, and let her go on her way.

Have you tried the pretty girly pull-ups. Make putting on panties or pampers fun. Try to turn it into a game.

I used to give my kids a book or keep a special toy they can only hold during diaper changes. It will be a nice distraction so you can quickly change them. This is just the age and them not wanting to stay still to long for so long. Good luck!!

Hi N.. Your daughter sounds like a very normal 11 month old. At this age, they are on the move and don't want to be slowed down or have to lie down for a pesky diaper change. If she is standing holding onto furniture at this stage, I would suggest trying to diaper her while she is standing up.
Good luck!
