We want to shave our golden retriever b/c she's getting too hot outside even with the patio. She's digging in unwanted areas in our new yard. We don't want to shave her until we get her into the vet to get her vaccines and a heartworm test. I have a coupon for a free vaccinations with an exam, but I know it has to cost more to get the heartworm test. What does this run in our area? I'll call them tomorrow, but tonight, we're curious and trying to figure out our budget for the month.

What can I do next?

I worked at a vet and can tell you taht the prices vary graetly according to where you go. I've seen full vaccs+fecal+heatworm testing run upwords $200-300. If you go low cost, it can all run around $70, so it's worth it to call around to see who offers low cost clinics.

Heartworm tests usually run from around $20-$40. Also, she will need heartworm meds. They run more expensive according to your pets weight. But they are essential, especially for an outdoor dog in Texas. I've seen many dogs dog of heartworm.

I would go ahead and shave her now. You will have to get the vaccs when you drop her off at the vet, so if the vet does grooming, you can get it all done at the same time. Or, there are many mobile groomers that come to your home and in that case, they don't typically require all shots.

We shave our dog ourselves. She's a lab/border collie mix and it takes about an hour. If your dog is calm, it shouldn't be a problem. Pet Smart has good sheers.

Be sure you have plenty of fresh water for her outside and get her shaved asap.

THere is a medical waste diposal fee at Petsmart of $3.70 per dog.

I have the papers on my computer desk, the girls just went in a week ago. I have two Shepherds and a Beagle mix.
We use Petsmart because they are national and we have moved so many times, military. I can walk into any Petsmart and they can pull up the girls' records.

The cost of both the test & meds do vary GREATLY from place to place. Beware of deals for free vaccines with exam. Ask them how much they charge for each shot individually, for just a general exam & what does that entail & what about fecal & heartworm testing? I've heard of several people getting ripped off with coupon deals. The exam price turns out to be more than they would charge for the vaccines alone. I used to work for a vet as well (out of state) & I have been amazed at what some vets around here try to charge & what they try to charge you for.
See when your area Petco/Petsmart or animal shelter is doing a low cost vaccine clinic. Feed stores, rescue groups, & pet centered business are also good people to contact as they usually attend local pet fairs & adoption events that usually have a low cost clinic going on as well.
Best of luck.

I don't live in TX, so it is probably different, but it isn't much. Less than $20. But the heartworm preventative itself is a bit more.... Usually if you buy a year's supply of doses (once per month tablets) you can get a discount. Some vets will even do the test for free if you buy a year's supply of tabs. I think the last time I bought heartworm tabs for our GSD it was around $60 for 12 doses... But I might be mistaken... I usually buy that at the same time as I buy a year's supply of Flea/Tick preventative, so I might have them confused. I do know, however, that there are several brands of heartworm tabs, and the prices vary a little on them.
